Master Meng soon came upstairs and, upon seeing Liu Guanfeng, bowed slightly and said, "Young Master Liu."
Liu Guanfeng also stood up to return the greeting, then called Master Meng closer and said, "Master Meng, I wanted to ask you to make a few items for me."
Meng Tie stood up and replied, "Young Master Liu, just tell me what you need."
"Alright, Master Meng. I need five pairs of wrist guards. I don't require any specific design, just the weight. One pair should weigh three pounds, one pair six pounds, and three pairs ten pounds each. I also need five pairs of leg guards, again just the weight: one pair ten pounds, one pair fifteen pounds, and three pairs twenty pounds each. Lastly, I need five iron vests," Liu Guanfeng specified the items to Master Meng, requesting the weights for the vests to be fifteen pounds each for one, twenty pounds for another, and three vests weighing thirty pounds each.
Master Meng informed the shopkeeper of the required materials and told him they would be delivered to his home in three days. The final price given by the shopkeeper was two gold coins. After paying, Liu Guanfeng left the Blacksmith Shop with Bao Rui and the others.
On the way back, Iron Bull surrounded Liu Guanfeng and asked, "Third Brother, what exactly did you order? What are they for?"
Liu Guanfeng only replied, "You'll find out when the items arrive."
Three days later, everything Liu Guanfeng ordered was delivered to his home. He called Bao Rui and the others into his room. Once they were all present, Liu Guanfeng said, "You’ve all seen what I ordered a few days ago; as for what these items are for, you'll know shortly."
Liu Guanfeng divided everything into five sets of equipment. He gave the lightest set to Dai and the next lightest to Bao Rui. The remaining three sets of equal weight were distributed among Copper Bull, Iron Bull, and himself.
Liu Guanfeng instructed them to wear all these items at all times; only the vests could be removed while sleeping; the wrist guards and leg guards had to be worn twenty-four hours a day. Seeing that they were required to wear these items all day long—even while sleeping—Copper Bull and the others immediately became interested.
"Third Brother, what are these for? They look quite heavy," Iron Bull said while feeling the items.
Liu Guanfeng smiled at them and replied, "You'll know once you put them on." With that, he led by example and began putting on his gear.
Seeing Liu Guanfeng donning his equipment, Bao Rui and the others followed suit. Once they were all dressed properly, they suddenly realized that while it wasn't as light as expected, it wasn't as heavy as they had imagined either.
Everyone's weight was almost equivalent to their own body weight. In other words, their current weight was double what it used to be, making it significantly more difficult for them to walk than before.
The next day, several students were seen walking awkwardly around the academy, and these students were key participants in the Academy Competition. The teachers who trained them for combat also noticed that usually these students practiced with ease, but now they were sweating profusely after only a few attempts, and they couldn't keep up with their previous performance.
This situation persisted for half a month before there was any improvement. However, their movements were still slow. During this time, Copper Bull and his friends were often mocked by their classmates. They had even complained to Liu Guanfeng about it.
Liu Guanfeng simply said, "If you want to become stronger, don't pay attention to others' mockery. Mockery cannot make you weaker." From then on, no matter how others laughed at them, Copper Bull and his friends acted as if they hadn't heard anything.
Soon it was time for the final exams, which only tested cultural subjects. There were two subjects: Calculation and Writing.
When the Calculation exam paper was handed out, Liu Guanfeng felt an urge to cry; these questions seemed like something a first grader would find easy. However, to avoid standing out too much, Liu Guanfeng could only lay his head on the desk and pretend to sleep when the paper was first distributed.
Even the proctor found it strange that this student was sleeping right away; although the questions were difficult, surely he couldn't be completely clueless. So the teacher took responsibility and approached his desk to wake him up and encourage him to answer the questions.
Reluctantly, Liu Guanfeng got up and pretended to write furiously on the scratch paper for Calculation. In reality, one of the questions was:
"There are thirty Steel Blades in the Armory, and two classes need to be allocated equipment with ten warriors in each class. After all warriors have received their Steel Blades, how many Steel Blades remain in the Armory?" Pretending to struggle with such a question was truly exhausting.
When Liu Guanfeng finished all the questions, he realized he was actually the fastest. His mind was indeed sharp; however, he could no longer hold back and had to get up to submit his paper.
In the dormitory, they waited until the exam ended before Platinum Wen returned. Finally, Bao Rui and his friends came back from outside. Upon entering, it was clear that Copper Bull and Iron Bull had performed poorly while Bao Rui felt satisfied with his performance. After having lunch and resting for a while, they went to participate in the afternoon writing exam.
During the writing exam, each person received a piece of paper with a prompt requiring them to create a poem and write it down. This tested both writing skills and literary knowledge. Upon seeing this prompt, Liu Guanfeng felt overwhelmed; he had always disliked memorizing Tang poetry as a child and often faced punishment for it.
Eventually, Liu Guanfeng thought of a poem called "Goose Poem," so he picked up his pen and wrote it down. After finishing, he felt relatively satisfied since the afternoon exam mainly focused on creativity and writing speed; thus, he didn't need much time to complete it.
Sure enough, it wasn't long before Bao Rui and Platinum Wen returned, while Copper Bull and Iron Bull only came back after the exam was over. When they returned, the two brothers told Liu Guanfeng that they simply couldn't write poetry, and in the end, they could only write the four characters "cannot write poetry" on the paper before handing it in.
Seeing the expressions of the two and thinking about how the two Little Guys wrote those words made the three people in the room burst into laughter. Bao Rui was even more exaggerated, almost laughing so hard he couldn't catch his breath. It was said that he even laughed so hard during dinner that he nearly spit out his food.
A few days later, the school announced the selected participants for the calligraphy competition. There were a total of five people: three from the fourth grade and two from the third grade. Moreover, all five of them were students from the Special Class. This was not surprising, as students from the Special Class relied heavily on their intellect and writing skills for their future lives, with writing classes being a major subject.
Especially Liu Guanfeng's Goose Poem was actually chosen by the school as a model to be displayed throughout the school. However, only the content was showcased, not his handwriting, because Liu Guanfeng's writing was simply not presentable. Although it had improved somewhat compared to before, it was still just barely acceptable.
Seeing that his poem earned him respect from both classmates and teachers, Liu Guanfeng felt proud not only for being able to fight but also for being able to write good poetry. The praise made Liu Guanfeng feel a bit elated; he never expected that plagiarism could have such benefits.
The results of the Calculation exam came out quickly, and Liu Guanfeng entered the second round of the school's Preliminary Competition with a perfect score. Along with him were Platinum Wen and two classmates from his class, as well as Bao Rui.
These five people were the first graders entering the Preliminary Competition. The academy would hold another round of Preliminary Competition in two days to select the final five contestants.
Two days later, Liu Guanfeng and the other four contestants, along with participants from three other grades totaling twenty people, were taken to a large classroom. In this classroom, there were four proctors who spread out all twenty participants to sit apart from each other at a distance of about two meters. Two proctors stood at the front and two at the back.
The exam was divided into two parts: first was quick Calculation, consisting of thirty questions with a time limit of twenty minutes; those who answered correctly and quickly would win. The second part was a regular exam lasting one hour with thirty application questions.
The first part's paper came down with thirty questions that were simple mental arithmetic problems from elementary school, with only the last five questions being consecutive addition or subtraction problems. Liu Guanfeng estimated he could finish them within three minutes.
After Liu Guanfeng's "hard work," he finally completed all questions within five minutes. When he handed in his paper, all four teachers looked at him in astonishment because even if they attempted to answer all questions themselves, it would take them ten minutes and they couldn't guarantee all answers would be correct.
After twenty minutes passed, the teachers collected all students' papers and then handed them the second part's paper. In this paper, multiplication could already be used; however, it was still multiplication within three, which was likely what fourth graders learned.
Nevertheless, multiplication within three could also be calculated using repeated addition; it just took longer. These questions were a bit troublesome as they required reading comprehension but wouldn't take more than ten minutes. After spending over ten minutes on it, Liu Guanfeng finally stood up with difficulty to hand in his paper.
The other students who were answering questions looked at Liu Guanfeng in surprise. He answered so quickly; did he really finish? Many upperclassmen looked down on Liu Guanfeng, as they struggled with the questions, and it was already impressive for a First Grade child like him to answer a few.
Liu Guanfeng returned to the dormitory, and nearly an hour later, Bao Rui and Platinum Wen came back, both with their heads down. Liu Guanfeng smiled and looked at the two of them.
"How did you do?"
Bao Rui said with his head lowered, "In the first twenty minutes of the quick Calculation section, I answered fifteen questions, but in the second part, I only managed ten."
Platinum Wen shook his head as well. "I did a bit better than Bao Rui; I wrote twenty for the quick Calculation, and I answered twelve in the latter part. I don't know if they're correct, but anyway, it can't represent the academy in the competition."
Bao Rui looked up at Liu Guanfeng. "Third Brother, you submitted your paper so quickly; how did you do?"
Liu Guanfeng also shook his head. "Not too well; I probably got everything right."
Platinum Wen was taken aback and then laughed. "Liu Guanfeng, you're just bragging. Soon those students who used cows as mounts will come looking for you to pay for their cows."
Hearing this from Platinum Wen made Bao Rui laugh as well. Bao Rui rarely saw Liu Guanfeng studying Calculation, and Platinum Wen didn't need to be mentioned; every time during Calculation class, Liu Guanfeng was sleeping. Liu Guanfeng couldn't be bothered to explain to them; they could believe what they wanted.
When the results came out the next day, both Platinum Wen and Bao Rui were stunned. The proctor was equally shocked because Liu Guanfeng ranked first and scored full marks in both tests.
The proctor was dumbfounded by the speed of his answering; he completed both tests in just over ten minutes and got everything right. So the proctor immediately reported this situation to the school.
The school's academic director specifically sought out Liu Guanfeng to inquire about the situation and gave him a few questions on the spot. After testing him, they confirmed that Liu Guanfeng had not cheated. Thus, he was immediately designated as the number one Seed Player for this Campus Competition in Calculation. Alongside Liu Guanfeng in the Campus Competition were four fourth-grade students.
