In order to provide his disciples with step-by-step guidance, Liu Guanfeng suggested that Black Eagle should recruit from the fifty disciples, starting from the advanced level down to the junior level. Despite these seemingly outrageous conditions, nearly five thousand people still came to seek apprenticeship—over forty Advanced Knights, more than five hundred Intermediate Knights, and the rest were Junior Knights and Apprentice Knights.
After observing those who came for selection, Black Eagle announced the first examination item proposed by Liu Guanfeng: "Everyone, here is our first test of the day; please take a look." With that, Black Eagle pointed to the steps behind him.
"You can see that these steps lead to our Starry Sect. There are a total of nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine steps leading to the top. The first test is to remove your shoes and socks and walk barefoot up each of these steps without using any Fighting Qi as assistance; using it even once will disqualify you from apprenticeship."

As several parents led their children forward, Cui Zhongyi crossed his iron rod in front of his chest and drew a line in front of him before stepping back a few meters. The parents were puzzled by his actions but halted upon seeing what he did.

So after exchanging glances, they each drew their weapons: a short sword, an iron rod, and a Great Axe. With their weapons in hand, one of them wielding the iron rod pointed at Cui Zhongyi and said, "Friend, we see you are a skilled fighter and do not wish to engage in battle that could lead to mutual destruction. If you step aside from this position, not only will you remain unharmed, but I also guarantee that you will receive your share of gold coins promised by our master earlier. How about we become friends?"
Meanwhile, Cui Zhongyi continued to keep his eyes closed with his iron rod standing upright beside him. Seeing that Cui Zhongyi was unyielding, the man with the iron rod became somewhat impatient:
