Liu Guanfeng looked at XP with confusion and asked, "Then why don't you come out? Why do you continue to live in the Underworld?"
"I don't know either. I only know that we have lived here for generations, nearly a thousand years now."
"Have you ever thought about bringing your people out?"
"I did consider this issue at first, but my words don't count. I'm not the king, so I have no say. Moreover, our clan seems to have some reservations about the outside world."
"You once said that you Hellhounds could never reach the Tenth Rank to become divine beasts, yet you did. This means you have the strength to become the king among your Hellhounds. Doesn't that mean you can take them away from there?"
"You're right, Master. The main thing I need to do when I return is to defeat the clan leader and become the new leader, then I can take everyone away from the Dark Underground World so our people can enjoy the fresh air and clear streams outside."
"Don't worry. With me and Xiaofeng around, you will undoubtedly be the king of Hellhounds."
Little Black reassured XP, who nodded in agreement: "With your help in securing the position of clan leader, it will be a piece of cake."
"Alright, let's get some sleep early. We need to prepare food and clean water tomorrow."
The next morning, Liu Guanfeng took Little Black and XP to buy food. He purchased a lot of both raw and cooked items. Fortunately, he had a Cosmic Bag, which prevents food from spoiling, so buying extra was not a problem. Liu Guanfeng spent nearly a hundred gold coins just on various meats. As for water, it was easier; he only needed to buy some containers and bags for water and then find a river or well to fill them up.
It took Liu Guanfeng the entire morning to gather all the necessary items. By then, he had filled all the remaining space in his Cosmic Bag with food and water. After ensuring everything was ready, Liu Guanfeng took his two mounts for lunch before setting off.
The Heavenly Beast Mountain Range is one of four mountain ranges on the continent and spans half of it, separating the Southern Tiger Empire from the West Lion Empire. There are numerous magical beasts within the Heavenly Beast Mountain Range, including many at Eighth Rank and Ninth Tier; even Tenth Rank divine beasts are quite numerous here.
However, due to the dense population of magical beasts in the Heavenly Beast Mountain Range, even powerful Divine Knights dare not venture recklessly. This has created opportunities for adventurers; in Red Tiger City, the largest and best building is the Mercenary Guild, where mercenaries come and go endlessly. Here they can take on various tasks related to magical beasts such as gathering, capturing, and hunting.
As Liu Guanfeng and XP walked out of Red Tiger City, it was the hottest part of the day. Even so, Liu Guanfeng could still see mercenaries dressed in various styles—some in groups, others in pairs or going solo. These individuals shared a common goal with Liu Guanfeng: heading to the Heavenly Beast Mountain Range.
Among the crowd, Liu Guanfeng stood out as a lone figure. There are typically two reasons for this: either one is extremely confident in their martial skills and possesses great strength or they are inexperienced newcomers who haven't found a suitable team.
The mounts Liu Guanfeng brought along—Little Black and XP—if not looked at closely could easily be mistaken for two small dogs; even as magical beasts they were not very high-level since Hellhounds like them are rarely seen on Knight's continent—they only grow in the underground world. Therefore, when some groups of mercenaries saw Liu Guanfeng, they all had one impression: he was an absolute novice; someone like him in the Heavenly Beast Mountain Range was akin to a fat sheep.
Although Liu Guanfeng might not have anything particularly valuable on him, even a few gold coins could provide some entertainment at a pleasure house. Not to mention that Liu Guanfeng's clothing was worth more than just a few coins. Thus many squads passing by carefully scrutinized him. Some even swallowed hard right in front of Liu Guanfeng.
Liu Guanfeng paid no attention to any of this. He only wanted to avoid trouble and quickly reach the entrance to the underground world. Just because Liu Guanfeng didn't want to cause trouble didn't mean others wouldn't want to bother him. Shortly after entering the Heavenly Beast Mountain Range, he was targeted by a few individuals. Although they were lurking in the shadows, Liu Guanfeng's spiritual sense had already revealed their presence.
Liu Guanfeng had no interest in killing these people; after all, they were relying on completing Mercenary missions to earn gold coins. At the same time, he didn't want them to continue following him. Thus, Liu Guanfeng chose a relatively secluded path. As he walked along, several people who had been trailing him disappeared one by one. After finding a deserted spot, Liu Guanfeng steadied himself and took out his Twin Iron Halberds from his Cosmic Bag.
Standing in the middle, he addressed those around him: "You've been following me for quite a while; it must be exhausting. If you think of me as an easy target, I believe you'll be disappointed. I advise you mercenaries to rely on your own hands to earn your rewards. If you spend your days robbing others, then you're nothing but bandits. And I have only one way to deal with bandits." With that, Liu Guanfeng threw his iron halberd with a whoosh; it embedded itself into a large tree ahead, which was so massive that it would take five adults to wrap their arms around it. The tree promptly snapped in response.
Liu Guanfeng retrieved his halberd and said to the surrounding individuals: "I hope you know better." After speaking, Liu Guanfeng leaped onto his mount, and in the blink of an eye, he and his two beasts vanished from the spot.
Just after Liu Guanfeng left, seven or eight mercenaries emerged from the nearby bushes, each gripping weapons in their hands, accompanied by their mounts. These mounts were all trembling on their four legs, making their appearance quite comical.
One of them wiped cold sweat from his brow and exclaimed, "My goodness! I thought we had found an easy target, but who knew we encountered a killing god? Thankfully we didn't act; otherwise, we would have ended up like that tree."
"Big brother, I think we should stick to normal missions from now on. If we run into someone like that again, our lives might just be over."
The man glanced at his long-time companions and nodded: "Our previous greed has made us forget that we are still mercenaries. Let's go back and take on some missions again."
With several people responding positively, the group left the Heavenly Beast Mountain Range and returned to Red Tiger City to accept Mercenary missions.
Under the guidance of his mount, Liu Guanfeng used his spiritual sense and the mount's scent to navigate past many powerful magical beasts and large beast tribes. After two days of traversing the Heavenly Beast Mountain Range, he finally reached a mountain foot. When Liu Guanfeng arrived at the base of the mountain, he could feel the heat emanating from within it. Although the mountain felt hot, the vegetation here was exceptionally lush.
"Is this where it is?"
"Yes, master. The entrance to the underground world is at the summit of this volcano."
"Alright then, let's go."
Once Liu Guanfeng reached this point, he was no longer worried about mercenaries lurking about since he had already ventured deep into the Heavenly Beast Mountain Range and was not too far from its core. Around this volcano, Liu Guanfeng noticed many sixth and seventh-tier magical beasts; most of these beasts appeared in groups, with some even being eighth or ninth-tier beast leaders.
Walking alongside his two magical beasts, Liu Guanfeng found it strange that despite the dense vegetation here, there were hardly any magical beasts on the mountain itself. Even if there were any beasts present, they were only first-tier Cloud Rabbits or second-tier Golden Roosters; otherwise, there were just some herbivorous animals—there were simply no magical beasts above third tier.
Following his mount all the way to the top of the volcano, Liu Guanfeng saw a cave at its peak. Near the cave entrance stood many withered trees; it looked like a watershed—lush forests below but barren land above.
What surprised Liu Guanfeng was not just those dead trees but also the animals resting upon them. Dozens of palm-sized fiery red birds perched on those dead trees near the cave entrance; among them sat one larger red bird that was more than twice as big as the others.
When these little birds noticed Liu Guanfeng's presence, they all perked up their heads and stared at him with their fiery eyes. Although Liu Guanfeng wasn't afraid of these low-level flying magical beasts, having thousands of eyes fixated on him was uncomfortable for anyone.
"Mount," he asked quietly, "what now? Should we venture inside?"
"Master, there's no need to worry, just watch me," said XP as it shook its little head and ran towards the largest bird. Upon seeing XP approach, all the birds began to call out, a sound that Liu Guanfeng recognized, almost identical to that of a crow.
Dozens of small birds flew in and surrounded XP. At this moment, Liu Guanfeng was ready for battle; if XP found itself in trouble among the flock, he would rush in to rescue it.
After surrounding XP, the birds did not attack. XP also stopped moving. Suddenly, a white light enveloped XP, and in an instant, two more heads and two tails slowly grew out. XP's size transformed from that of a Pekingese to that of a bull.
Upon seeing this transformation, the red birds immediately flew back to the dead tree. At the same time, all the red birds stood up and lowered their heads towards XP, as if bowing.
XP, resembling a king at this moment, raised its three heads towards the sky. The largest bird called out twice with "caw caw," and XP responded with two barks.
Finally, all the red birds near the entrance of the cave flew to the side onto another piece of wood, clearing a path for Liu Guanfeng. Meanwhile, XP wobbled back.
"Master, everything is taken care of."
"What just happened? You startled me; I thought they were going to attack you."
"Master, I worried you. These birds are called Fire Crows; they are a type of low-level flying magical beast. Their leader is a Sixth Tier beast. The Fire Crows are like our Hellhounds' subordinates; wherever we go, they follow us. We only need to throw them our leftover food. In the Underworld, Fire Crows serve as our Hellhounds' messengers and also act as guardians of the Underworld."
"Is it just you Hellhounds and them Fire Crows in the Underworld?"
"Not at all; there are many other creatures in the Underworld. Originally, these creatures fought among themselves, but none dared to venture into the Three Layers lightly because that is our Hellhounds' territory. Ever since those two black dragons arrived in our Underworld and drove us Hellhounds to the second layer, we had to unite all underground creatures to counterbalance them. Initially, it was unsuccessful; however, after the black dragons came up several times and devoured numerous magical beasts, their leaders finally realized the danger and agreed to submit to us Hellhounds. Since Fire Crows are the only flying magical beasts in the Underworld, they have since become both guardians and messengers."
