As dinner time approached, Jiang Chen went to the hotel restaurant for a meal. After finishing his dinner, he headed straight back to his room to rest. The night passed quietly, and the next morning, they arrived at Nangang Wetland Park.
Typically a tourist area, the park was closed to the public today. Security guards stood at the entrance, allowing only those with invitations to enter. This Martial Arts Gathering had invited hundreds of martial artists, and since most attendees brought companions, the actual number exceeded a thousand.
The Martial Arts Grand Assembly was not open to the public, and choosing Nangang Wetland Park ensured that any sparring would go unnoticed by outsiders. The park was formed by the convergence of several rivers, featuring meadows and marshes. In October, the reeds swayed along the riverbanks in shades of green and yellow, while birds occasionally took flight, creating a picturesque scene.
At the dock near the entrance of the scenic area, many black-covered boats were available for visitors. People often enjoyed leisurely rides through the winding waterways, especially during sunset when the sky blazed with colors and reflected beautifully on the water, creating a serene atmosphere that made one reluctant to leave.
Jiang Chen arrived early, with many others still on their way.
“Hey, Mr. Jiang! I didn’t expect to see you here,” someone called out excitedly from behind him as he admired the scenery of the wetland park.
Turning around, Jiang Chen saw Yue Hui standing there with several others, including Hu Sanxiong, an underground boss from Zhejiang Province, and his son, Hu Yuan. Jiang Chen had met Hu Yuan before in Hangcheng and had heard about Hu Sanxiong as well.
During their last encounter in Hangcheng, Hu Yuan had not taken a liking to Jiang Chen. Since then, he had often heard Yue Hui mention Jiang Chen’s impressive martial arts skills, which only deepened his resentment. Although Yue Hui had explained that she and Jiang Chen were just friends, Hu Yuan still harbored ill feelings.
Seeing Jiang Chen again today and noticing Yue Hui greeting him warmly made Hu Yuan’s already stern expression darken further. Meanwhile, Hu Sanxiong paid little attention to Jiang Chen; as a powerful figure, he dismissed him as just a young kid.
Hu Yuan glared at Jiang Chen and coldly said, “Kid, what a coincidence! Do you remember what I said to you last time?”
Fearing that her fiancé might provoke a confrontation with Jiang Chen, Yue Hui quickly interjected, “Brother Hu Yuan, Mr. Jiang is very skilled in martial arts; you shouldn’t let things get out of hand between you two.”
“What does it matter? No matter how strong he is, he’s nothing in my eyes,” Hu Yuan replied dismissively. Having studied swordsmanship for years in Island Nation, he was confident in his abilities and believed he could take on even a Master of Transformation.
“Brother Hu Yuan, I believe you’re stronger than Mr. Jiang,” Yue Hui said softly in an attempt to mediate. Though she had seen Jiang Chen in action before, her heart belonged to Hu Yuan; naturally, she thought her fiancé was superior.
Upon hearing Yue Hui's words, Hu Yuan's expression softened slightly.
“Fine then, for your sake I won’t make things difficult for him. But if he has any inappropriate thoughts about you, don’t blame me for being rude. You are my girlfriend now; no one else should dare covet you,” Hu Yuan declared.
Hu Yuan had a strong desire for control over everything in his life—including women. He viewed Yue Hui as his possession and didn’t want her interacting too much with other men.
Jiang Chen felt somewhat speechless; it was as if Hu Yuan saw him as a rival for his girlfriend's affection. Did he really think Jiang Chen was trying to steal her away?
Jiang Chen remained silent, too lazy to respond further.
"Forget it, there's no need to argue with a kid," Hu Sanxiong remarked.
"Alright, I'll talk to you later," Hu Yuan nodded. He had come to the Martial Arts Gathering to make a name for himself and saw no reason to create conflict with Jiang Chen.
Yue Hui noticed that Hu Sanxiong was completely indifferent to Jiang Chen and pulled Hu Yuan aside to whisper, feeling a bit awkward. To ease the tension, she casually struck up a conversation with Jiang Chen.
"Mr. Jiang, you came alone, right?" Yue Hui asked.
Jiang Chen nodded.
"Then why don't you join us? It will be more lively with more people around. I heard today's Martial Arts Gathering is going to be quite spectacular," Yue Hui invited, feeling a favorable impression towards Jiang Chen.
Jiang Chen remained noncommittal.
After about ten minutes, most of the attendees had arrived, with thousands gathering at the dock of Wetland Park. Many were familiar faces, and as they greeted each other, the atmosphere became lively and bustling.
"Mr. Jiang, I have a few friends who just arrived; I’ll go say hello," Hu Sanxiong quickly found an excuse to leave with Yue Hui and Hu Yuan, not wanting to stay with Jiang Chen.
Yue Hui felt helpless; compared to Jiang Chen, she naturally prioritized her Brother Hu Yuan more.
The main purpose of this Martial Arts Gathering was to provide a platform for mutual sparring, which was indeed a great opportunity for young people to make a name for themselves.
This Martial Arts Grand Assembly didn't represent all of Huaxia Martial Arts but at least sixty percent of it. To shine in such an event would certainly be a topic of discussion among many.
Once everyone had gathered, an elder from the Peng Family stepped forward to direct everyone onto boats heading deeper into Wetland Park.
With so many people, there weren’t enough black canopied boats; fortunately, there were painted pleasure boats that could accommodate sixty or seventy people each.
Since riding in the black canopied boats required rowing oneself, no one was keen on that option, and everyone rushed to board the pleasure boats instead.
Among the crowd, Peng Bo spotted Jiang Chen and invited him onto his family's boat.
"Mr. Jiang, my grandfather has finished his retreat and is on the pleasure boat; let me take you to meet him," Peng Bo said enthusiastically. Due to Chen Zhi's recommendation, the Peng Family felt compelled to treat Jiang Chen with respect, at least on the surface.
Jiang Chen accepted without refusal and boarded one of the pleasure boats with Peng Bo. Inside, the Peng Family Ancestor, Peng Tianqi, was chatting over tea with several elderly gentlemen.
Among them was Yan Lianwei from the Yan Family Ancestor line, along with two other elders who appeared venerable and wise-looking—one was Hua Yuedao from the Hua Family Ancestor line and the other was Luo Xiong from the Luo Family Ancestor line.
The Hua Family, also known as the Luo Family, is one of the Seven Great Martial Arts Families of Huaxia.
During this Martial Arts Grand Assembly, four Ancestors from the Seven Great Martial Arts Families gathered, which is quite a rare occurrence. In the past, during Martial Arts Grand Assemblies, the Ancestors of each family rarely made an appearance. The presence of four this time is already extremely uncommon. Even so, they did not feel at ease in their hearts.
