Chapter 30: Give Me a Reason Not to Kill You
"Divine Hand, this kid..." A strong man looked at me with hostility and made a throat-cutting gesture to the man sitting beside him.
I watched his actions and the many men around holding guns, a bitter feeling rising in my heart. After finally escaping from those monstrous beings, I never expected to be captured and tied to a tree by a group of strangers. I should have checked the almanac before heading out today; it seems that trouble follows me into the woods!
The man known as "Divine Hand" was dressed in a simple black and white outfit, wearing large black Sniper Goggles. He sat upright in front of the campfire, most of his face obscured by the large windproof lenses, so I couldn't see his expression. However, the slight curve of his lips hinted at a dangerous aura.
"Divine Hand" continued to scrutinize me and after a few seconds asked the strong man, "Evil Bird, do you know who he is?"
His tone was cold and even carried a hint of mockery. As soon as he finished speaking, the strong man called "Evil Bird" turned his gaze toward me and disdainfully said, "Isn't he just a snot-nosed kid?"
You’re the snot-nosed kid! Resisting the urge to curse him out, I had no choice but to keep my head down for now. So I rolled my eyes and ignored them. However, it seemed like "Divine Hand" recognized me? But I was sure I had never seen him before; otherwise, someone so flashy and unique would definitely leave an impression.
Sure enough, "Divine Hand" shook his head slightly and said to me, "He is Feng Zi."
"He's Feng Zi?!" A glimmer of surprise flashed in "Evil Bird's" eyes before he burst into laughter. "I didn't expect Feng Yuanliang's son to look so soft and delicate. Tsk tsk, like a girl. No wonder he wasn't taught how to fight; if it were me, I wouldn't let him in the ring either—he'd just be a liability!"
Hearing this, if I could still hold back my anger, I wouldn't be a man! So I lifted my head and shouted at him, "Are you blind? Am I too handsome for you to handle? Are you envious, jealous, or just plain hateful?" Both Old Master and Yuanliang are respectful titles for experts in Tomb Raiding, so it's not surprising they know my dad.
"I didn't expect your mouth to be so sharp. Did I pull out your teeth or cut out your tongue?" "Evil Bird" pulled out a sharp dagger from his waist and walked toward me with an ugly expression while glaring at me.
"You... you dare!" I glared at him, the sharp dagger reflecting a cold gleam under the moonlight. Now, trapped in danger, even Lime's arrival might not save me!
Evil Bird spat heavily and stepped in front of me, placing the dagger against my neck with disdain. "Why don't you tell me what I should be afraid of?"
"I-I won't let my friends go after you!" Although I believed he would really go through with it, I was still unwilling to die like this. But after I spoke, Evil Bird burst into loud laughter, glancing back at Divine Hand and saying, "Divine Hand, can I kill this kid?"
It seemed that Divine Hand tacitly approved of Evil Bird's words. When Evil Bird turned back to me with a fierce grin, I quickly said, "If you want to offend Lime and Master Qing, then go ahead and kill me. I believe he will definitely avenge me!"
Perhaps Lime's reputation was too great; when I finished speaking, Evil Bird's smile froze, and he stopped to ask me menacingly, "You say Master Qing is your friend?"
"Of course!" I replied confidently.
Evil Bird's expression darkened for a moment before he laughed arrogantly again. "Dead men don't speak. Besides, whether he can find you after you die is another matter altogether. Don't even mention knowing Murderer!"
Damn it! Looking at his burly figure, I didn't expect him to be so clever. Despite his arrogant smile, I mustered my courage and said, "No wonder when we heard gunshots earlier, Lime said you guys had indeed come. At that time, I was curious about who you were; turns out you're just a bunch of bullies who rely on numbers!"
The big man stared at me as if considering the truth of my words. At that moment, Divine Hand said calmly, "Let him go."
"Divine Hand?" Evil Bird looked at Divine Hand in disbelief. When he saw that Divine Hand remained silent, he reluctantly cut the ropes binding me. If looks could kill, I would have been dismembered by now.
I was roughly pushed in front of Divine Hand. He slowly raised his head and coldly said, "I think you must have more than just this one bargaining chip. Give me a reason not to kill you."
A reason not to kill me? As I thought it over, the only thing that came to mind was that I had a Black Key. Although I didn't know if it was real or fake, it was something Lime had painstakingly retrieved from the coffin. My father had gone missing because of this key. While Lime had said it could save my life, handing over the key so easily now would be too humiliating.
Perhaps seeing my hesitation, the Evil Bird impatiently scolded me and dismissively said to the Divine Hand, "So what if it's Lime? Not to mention that person has always been a lone wolf, even if he really knows him, what can he do for us? Besides, since that damned old man didn't even tell him the secret, keeping him around is useless. We might as well just get rid of him and be done with it!"
"True," the Divine Hand seemed to not care about me at all. After the Evil Bird finished speaking, he didn't even glance my way, stood up, and said, "You handle it," before preparing to leave.
Hey, are you even human? Is my life really that worthless? I suppressed my anger, took a step back while rummaging through my pocket for something, and shouted, "You dare!"
At my shout, they suddenly aimed their guns at me. I could only laugh awkwardly and say, "Relax, relax, don't be so agitated. Don't you want the key? I happen to have one right here. If you let me go..."
"Key?" Before I could finish my sentence, the Divine Hand turned around to look at me.
"Pah! How could you possibly have a key in your hand!" The Evil Bird glared at me fiercely, his pitch-black eyeballs filled with disbelief.
I didn't want to waste any more breath arguing with them, so I pretended to be displeased and said, "Believe it or not, this Black Key was personally handed to me by Lime today for safekeeping." With that, I held up the Black Key in front of me and shook it. Seeing this, the Evil Bird reached out to grab it, but I pulled it back and stepped back a few paces, warily saying, "If you dare to snatch it from me, I'll throw it away. Then you'll have to go find it yourselves!"
"Divine Hand?" The Evil Bird's expression was both angry and troubled, but since the final decision lay with the Divine Hand, he could only look at him for help.
"It's just a Black Key. How do you know I don't have one in my hand?" The Divine Hand remained calm as ever, his tone as indifferent as before.
If I didn't know how important this key was, I might have thought that the Divine Hand truly looked down on it. So after sneering twice, I pretended to ponder aloud, "True enough. Lime told me there seem to be many keys like this Black Key. It wouldn't be surprising if you had one too. But I'm still curious whether this key is real or fake. Is it really worth taking such risks to retrieve it from that coffin? It made the Blood Corpse furious..."
