"Corpse Cave?" I was taken aback and glanced at the person who answered me, surprisingly it was the usually silent Kong Quan. However, he seemed unwilling to explain further, so I turned back to look at the Corpse Cave again. How could such an ordinary tree hole be called a Corpse Cave? The name sounded unsettling!
The forest became darker much earlier than outside; in just a moment, everything around us was engulfed in darkness. Even the moonlight struggled to peek through the gaps in the leaves. The atmosphere was heavy and oppressive, and for some reason, even though we all knew danger was imminent, no one suggested leaving.
"What are we doing here?" I finally couldn't hold back my question.
Divine Hand glanced at me lightly. I stared at his large glasses, and finally, he spoke: "Isn't this place unusual?"
His words seemed directed at himself or perhaps at everyone else. Regardless, I thought it was a pointless statement! Suppressing my disdain for him, I was about to speak when Divine Hand continued, "Strangeness must have its cause; you all should go look for it." As soon as he finished speaking, many people began searching around.
"Are you saying...?" White Two turned to look at Divine Hand with a mix of joy and worry on his face.
"Yes," Divine Hand nodded and said, "It might be right below us."
Although he spoke very casually, as if discussing what to eat for dinner, my eyelids involuntarily twitched. Right below us? Before I could think too much about it, we heard a scream from not far away. The scream lasted only four or five seconds before stopping but was utterly horrifying.
All the flashlight beams turned toward the source of the scream as we rushed over. We found a person lying among countless dead branches and weeds; it was the one who had just screamed. But now, this person's head was gone...
An eerie Blood Stench filled the cold night air, mixed with the scent of decaying leaves. Even without vomiting, it made me feel uncomfortable all over. I frowned and couldn't bear to look any longer; how could someone die so tragically in just a few seconds? Not only was their head missing, but their body was also mangled as if it had been torn apart by something. Strangely enough, we hadn't seen anything suspicious!
"Be careful!" Divine Hand shouted angrily. Suddenly he turned and fired a shot almost instantaneously. However, it was still too late; we heard a gunshot followed by another terrified scream. Mixed with that scream was a sharp shriek that echoed hauntingly in this desolate forest.
"Get out of here quickly!" It seemed that Divine Hand also knew we couldn't stay here for long, and immediately led the group back the way we came. However, just as we started running, the grass around us began to sway violently, and at the same time, a hoarse and mournful sound suddenly echoed throughout the forest. Everyone quickly drew their guns. I didn't have a gun and didn't want to die as miserably as those two, so I had no choice but to slip into their ranks.
Since their guns were equipped with small flashlights, they could shoot far but had a narrow focus. I widened my eyes to see what was in the grass; the weeds were less than knee-high but had stopped shaking violently and were now only subtly writhing. The area in the grass was dark, and although it was obscured by the foliage, I could initially judge that whatever it was, it wasn't large and wasn't human. Just as I strained to get a better look, countless blood-red lanterns suddenly lit up. Those small red lanterns, each no bigger than my thumbnail and glimmering ominously, sent cold sweat trickling down my back as a chill crept up my spine. I thought I already knew what those things were...
Those countless blood-red lanterns were clearly eyes! Countless pairs of cold, fierce eyes were glaring at us!
As they closed in step by step, Evil Bird anxiously said, "There are too many of them. If their attack power is that strong, Divine Hand, it seems we..."
"Shut up!" Before Evil Bird could finish speaking, White Two snapped at him fiercely and said, "You all go first; I'll cover you!" Without waiting for Divine Hand to respond, he threw a dark object forward. Before I could react, a loud explosion accompanied by a blinding flash erupted, followed by hoarse and sharp cries as Divine Hand and the others charged outward.
Evil Bird threw another object to the side; the ensuing explosion was earth-shattering. I wiped the cold sweat from my forehead—damn it, they even used grenades! What on earth are these people? Although I knew it was rather dishonorable to run away like this, since even their own people didn’t mind, what right did I have as an outsider to say anything? Staying behind would only lead to my own demise. So I took one last look at White Two and silently mourned for him before mustering all my strength to run forward.
More explosions sounded behind me. I didn't know what happened to White Two in the end, but I absolutely admired him now. Who would have thought that this seemingly rough and unreliable guy would be so bold and fearless, voluntarily staying behind as cannon fodder...
Just as I was reflecting on this, the hoarse chirping sounds returned around us. This time the noise seemed even more chaotic and loud; it appeared that White Two's actions had angered them. Under the swaying lights, those creatures finally revealed their true forms!
My heart nearly leapt into my throat; although there weren't many of them, they were enough to cause a stir! These creatures looked like rats but were at least one or two times larger than ordinary rats. They were hairless with shiny black skin that looked quite disgusting!
"Rats?" Evil Bird stared in shock at the suddenly appearing creatures. In contrast, Divine Hand remained much calmer; he raised his gun and fired once, saying, "Rat Zongzi."
Damn it; it turned out to be a Rat Zongzi!
The eerie red light flickered as one Rat Zongzi lunged toward us. In an instant, Divine Hand shot it down before it could even let out a cry. It fell to the ground lifelessly. I glanced over and couldn't help but twitch my mouth—what kind of marksmanship did it take to shoot its head off mid-air?
As the number of Rat Zongzi around us increased, the hoarse cries grew more and more mournful. Divine Hand surprisingly put away his gun, and Evil Bird immediately asked, "Divine Hand, what are you doing?"
"Getting ready to light a fire," Divine Hand said calmly as he took out a water bottle from his bag and neatly sprinkled it around. Evil Bird quickly cooperated and ignited it; flames leaped up instantly. With the help of others, a natural firewall formed around us in no time.
The shrill screams around us diminished, while Divine Hand remained largely unresponsive. The bright flames flickered on his black windbreaker glasses. Suddenly, I thought of something and felt a chill run down my spine as I looked at Divine Hand and asked, "Did you think of this method long ago?"
