I blinked, and it finally dawned on me that I was actually clinging to a rock with all fours, hanging over the Surface!
Oh my gosh, even I couldn't help but praise myself as a "master"! In that moment of waiting for death, I reacted so quickly and managed to hold onto the rock without falling. Truly an extraordinary skill!
“How did you do that?” After a long pause, Evil Bird still hadn't come to his senses and stared at me, asking.
“Conditioned reflex!” I shot him an annoyed glance and said, “What are you standing there for? Hurry up and save me!”
“If that’s a reflex, then you should just reflex back!” Evil Bird laughed gleefully.
“Get lost!” Just when I hadn’t realized it before, now that my mind was clear, I felt my limbs go weak. I was still shivering; after all, there were very strange things hidden beneath this Black Water! I couldn’t help but look down again, and sure enough, just as I feared, the Surface below began to roll ominously. I could even clearly see many black strands of hair floating and entangling...
Just when I wanted to cry, the Surface suddenly rolled even more violently. In an instant, it felt like the last layer of Membrane had been pierced, and several black hand-like masses surged up from the Black Water. If nothing unexpected happened, I would definitely be pulled down this time!
Despairing, I looked at that slimy thing. “Bang bang bang…” A few gunshots rang out, and those “black hands” were instantly shattered, spraying out a thick black liquid. Some even splattered onto my legs; even though it was through a layer of pants, I could still feel the chilling cold. I knew that this chill was largely a psychological effect.
“Hurry up and crawl over here; don’t waste our bullets.” At this unfortunate moment, I heard Evil Bird’s annoyingly smug voice. I shot him an irritated glare and cursed, “Why don’t you try crawling over it?” It was easy for him to say; I was already extremely fortunate not to have fallen into the Black Water. He actually expected me to crawl across such a narrow stone! What a ridiculous idea!
Not to mention whether the stone was sturdy or not; just balancing on such a slender surface was difficult enough. If I accidentally lost my balance and slipped down, my life would be over! So I strongly resisted.
Evil Bird glared back at me and then turned to Divine Hand with a smug expression, saying, “Anyway, this kid is useless to us; he’s just a hassle. Since he won’t come over, we won’t force him. Let’s continue on our way! We’ve wasted quite a bit of time already!”
Divine Hand seemed to ponder for a moment as he glanced at me. Just as I cursed their ancestors in my mind, he spoke up: “Kong Quan, you go.”
I stared at him in a daze. What, is he trying to save me? Watching Kong Guayan silently leap onto the rocks and walk towards me, I felt both touched and alarmed. The stones were narrow, really narrow, even slightly narrower than Kong Guayan's foot. His sense of balance was excellent, but even as he walked steadily towards me, I felt my heart race. Comparing myself to him made me feel utterly weak.
However, I wouldn't let myself feel inferior because they were not ordinary people! Walking so leisurely on this dangerous Black Water while stepping on a single plank, I couldn't imagine how they trained for this. Did they practice walking on a Single Plank Bridge every day? Just as my mind was racing with wild thoughts, one of his feet suddenly stopped right in front of me.
I looked up and gave him a grin, asking, "How do we get back?"
It wasn't that I doubted his abilities; it was just that this seemingly five-star dangerous Single Plank Bridge couldn't hold two people's weight for long. He managed to come over alone, but could he take me back, someone with poor balance?
As I looked at him in confusion, I suddenly saw the corner of his mouth lift slightly. Although the curve was small, I instantly had a bad feeling. Sure enough, the next moment he bent down and grabbed the collar of my shirt at the back of my neck. In a dizzying spin, I lost my balance and center of gravity. The crowd suddenly parted, and I crashed against the mountain wall before falling heavily...
Although I knew he must have controlled the force well, I still felt dazed from the impact and rolled around unsteadily before finally stopping. Before I could feel relieved, a cold sensation shot through my ankle. Earlier, to leave a mark, my long pants had been turned into three-quarter pants, and now I was acutely aware of that unusual touch...
In an instant, I grabbed the nearest large foot with both hands. Suddenly feeling a tight pull on my foot made me slide back a bit; fortunately, I managed to hold onto a leg. Otherwise, I would have definitely been dragged down. A few gunshots rang out, and whatever was holding onto my foot disappeared.
In front of everyone's gaze, I awkwardly got up from the ground and saw Evil Bird looking at me with disdain. After thinking for a moment, I realized that what I had grabbed earlier must have been Evil Bird's large foot; no wonder I hadn't been dragged down. It seemed being heavy was an advantage!
Even though I had fallen hard, I still thanked Kong Guayan and we continued deeper inside. This time we moved very cautiously; Divine Hand led the way in front of us. We stepped where he had stepped for over half an hour until the path ahead widened. The "narrow sky" above us also disappeared, leading into another area of darkness.
Inside the pitch-black cave, only the faint light from our flashlights illuminated our surroundings. It was then that I realized this place was actually a natural cave system that extended upward. The ground was full of rocky pits and depressions; especially with the temperature inside being so low that even wearing a thicker jacket made me shiver several times.
"Don't move!" Divine Hand suddenly said as the light flickered.
"What did you find?" Evil Bird asked nervously.
Divine Hand did not respond, only shining the flashlight straight ahead. When the light stopped, I saw a figure...
Due to the distance, I could only see a dark silhouette. The humanoid shadow was currently pressed against the mountain wall, and the surroundings became very quiet. I could even clearly hear the dripping water inside the cave, but that sound was undoubtedly more like a death knell, dripping rhythmically like the heartbeat of the mountain.
"You, go take a look." Divine Hand pushed me forward and ordered without room for argument.
"Why does it have to be me!?" I protested angrily.
"What do you think we kept you around for?" Divine Hand retorted without conscience.
So you kept me here to clear the way for you!? I shot him a resentful glare and reluctantly snatched the flashlight from his hand, ignoring his "tch" sound as I moved forward. Clearing the way was fine; at least I wouldn't have to use my own flashlight. Although there were two flashlights in my bag, no one would complain about having too many in such a dangerous cave, right?
The beam of the flashlight continued to shine on that black figure. Although my heart raced with fear, my steps did not falter; at least I didn't want others to look down on me anymore.
After walking several meters forward, I finally saw what that thing really was and let out a sigh of relief. Turning back, I smiled at them and said, "Aren't you coming over? Look how scared you all are!"
"Stop talking nonsense." Evil Bird shouted at me but did not come closer.
I shrugged indifferently and walked over boldly without the previous caution. It seemed they hadn't seen what it was after all; I secretly chuckled to myself.
Sure enough, it was a Humanoid Stone Statue! I happily shone the flashlight on this Stone Statue that was about my height and didn’t find anything unusual. Perhaps seeing that I was fine encouraged them to come over as well. Suddenly, I screamed, turned off the flashlight, and sat down on the ground.
