After eating and resting for a while, both parties continued on their journey. Although Pei Zi and Song A still held some hostility towards Xianxian and the others, they did not cause any trouble.
Song A and Pei Zi had coincidentally met on their way here, so they came together. As for how they found this place, I did not ask much; I felt we were not close enough for such candid conversations yet.
Initially, when we went to Heizhugou, only Wuma You, Xiaoxue, and Pei Zi remained from the five-member group. Excluding Song A, there were now two more people. I took a quick glance at the newcomers; both were tall and looked sturdy. One appeared honest and simple, while the other seemed shrewd and cunning.
After observing them, I casually asked, "Pei Zi, did you see anyone else inside?"
"Anyone else?" Pei Zi paused before replying, "We saw quite a few dead bodies, but only you guys are alive. This place is too vast; we should still be on the outskirts of the Underworld."
So if they were still alive, they must have already entered the Underworld? I didn't believe that Divine Hand would easily perish like that, and Lemon was even less likely to be dead. So they must have gone in? We had already wasted three or four days; we needed to speed up!
As we passed by enormous stone pillars, I couldn't help but whisper, "What’s the purpose of all these massive stone pillars?" I really couldn't understand; were they meant to frighten timid Tomb Raiders or to make bold ones even more eager for the treasures inside?
"There must be a reason," said the shrewd-looking person behind Pei Zi with a chuckle. "Maybe it's to prevent collapses, hehehe~"
"There wouldn't be any traps, would there?" Wu Xiaoshou asked nervously.
"Everyone be careful," Pei Zi advised.
Could it really be to prevent collapses? Although I found these pillars somewhat strange, nothing had happened so far. I decided to ask Xianxian beside me; his experience was far greater than mine. Perhaps he could notice things I missed. I nudged him with my elbow and quietly asked, "Xianxian, are we on the wrong path?"
It wasn't that I didn't trust Pei Zi and the others; it was just that after walking for so long without seeing another path and with these towering stone pillars surrounding us, this tomb chamber seemed enormous!
Xianxian shook his head and whispered back, "They have no reason to deceive us." After a pause, he added, "It's just that they don't know the way either."
I was stunned; it turned out they didn't know the way!
Suddenly, with a "thud," it felt like my foot had bumped into something. That object rolled a few times on the ground before coming to a stop, the crisp sound standing out sharply in the otherwise silent atmosphere. I quickly turned on my flashlight to look for it, and I wasn't the only one; others also shone their lights in the direction of the noise. Before long, I spotted the source of the commotion.
"It’s just a broken bottle, scared me half to death!" Wu Xiaoshou cursed and prepared to step on it. Seeing this, I hurriedly bumped into him and ran over to pick it up.
"Who the hell bumped into me? Feng... you?" Wuma You managed to steady himself, pointing at me in surprise, unsure of what to say.
I smiled lightly at him and said, "This thing looks familiar; it seems like something my friend brought." It was indeed a small glass bottle that belonged to Dabao! However, the cap was missing... and Dabao was nowhere to be found...
Seeing the expressions of others still filled with disbelief, Xianxian walked over, curiously took the small glass bottle from me, examined it, and asked, "Could this be that thing you mentioned called Dabao?"
"Yeah." I nodded, a hint of sadness and guilt flashing through my mind as I said, "I haven't seen him in so long; I didn't expect to find this here."
"Could it be that he left this as a marker on purpose?" Wu Xiaoshou's eyes lit up as he asked.
Although I knew it was unlikely, I still managed a bittersweet smile and said, "Maybe." Dabao would never throw this away unless... unless something had happened!
"Look, there seems to be a mark here!" One person crouched in front of a pillar and exclaimed with joy.
The others quickly gathered around. Xianxian patted my shoulder. I sighed and put the small glass bottle into my pocket before walking over with her to take a look. What they called a mark was more like several scratches! They appeared to have been made with some sharp object—perhaps a knife or something else.
"There's one here too!"
"And here!"
Scratches on other pillars were discovered one after another, and even the surrounding atmosphere seemed to ease up a bit without us noticing. I glanced at the so-called mark; it was just three non-parallel horizontal lines. I had no idea who left them. Following these marks might lead us out or perhaps... to an even more dangerous place...
"What should we do?" asked the big guy who looked rather simple-minded.
Wu Xiaoshou and the others looked at Pei Zi, clearly waiting for him to make a decision. Meanwhile, Xianxian's group couldn't remain calm either as they gathered together to discuss. Who could have left these marks? Where did they lead? Was it a good intention or a trap?
"Is it meaningful to think about these things now?" Xianxian said, a slight smile on his lips, a quick glint flashing in his eyes, his expression cold and ambiguous.
"We have no choice." Perhaps seeing the hesitation and confusion of others, Dr. Takayoshi explained lightly. Xianxian nodded and added, "It's better to fight than to waste away here."
"Right, let's give it a shot! If there's anything dirty, we'll take one down at a time, or two at once!" Wang Yi said fiercely, arms crossed, unafraid of anything.
Seeing Xianxian leaning against the pillar as if nothing were wrong, I couldn't help but twitch my lips. It was the same last time as it is now; his mobilization efforts as the leader were truly lacking—one might even say terrible! In times of crisis, he seemed intent on crushing his subordinates' hopes!
However, ha ha, this was indeed something he could do.
When we were trapped in the Impossible Staircase, I had asked him why he did this, why he deliberately crushed their hopes. At that time, he simply told me one thing, and I understood.
He said, "Holding onto hope is merely an act of cowardice; I don't want them to die so quickly."
While giving hope in despair can boost overall morale effectively, it is not a long-term solution. Rather than harboring illusions, it's better to let them face despair from the start! Only those who can survive despair will have greater courage to face more dangerous situations; this is not something that can be achieved overnight.
And someone like Xianxian, who can remain calm in any perilous or desperate situation, must have experienced many inhumane things…
His calmness is not feigned; his composure in crisis is not something that can be cultivated overnight. Such a person inevitably piques my curiosity! What has he gone through to become who he is today? I couldn't help but glance at him; I must say, Xianxian's appearance is top-notch. From his hairstyle and earrings to his clothing style, everything is trendy—it's almost hard to associate him with Tomb Raider. His demeanor clearly sets him apart from the typical Tomb Raider; he resembles more of a wealthy young master!
But how did he fall into the Tomb Raider profession? Such an industry ties one's neck to the waistband; to speak ominously, one misstep could lead to death! My curiosity only grew stronger; once we get out of here, I must inquire about his background. After all, as a brother, it's only right to show some concern, ha ha ha…
