Following the markings on the pillar, we walked carefully without stopping. After nearly half an hour, three forks in the road suddenly appeared ahead of us.
Everyone exchanged glances, and it was strange that the markings disappeared here. After searching for a while, we discovered a messy character written on the wall directly in front of us; it seemed to be the character for "wood," but we had no idea who left it.
"Which way should we go?" Wang Yi asked.
Xianxian calmly looked at the three paths, stroked her chin thoughtfully, and said, "Let's go straight."
Pei Zi discussed it for a moment and also agreed to go straight. No one had any objections, so we prepared to continue moving forward.
I had just taken two steps when I suddenly felt a gaze from my right. Instinctively turning my head, I saw a figure turning away and walking off. In that instant, I realized that the face looked somewhat familiar, so without thinking, I chased after them.
"Fengfeng, where are you going?!" Xianxian's anxious voice came from behind me. I didn't turn back or stop; I continued to pursue because that person was getting closer and closer. Their silhouette appeared somewhat ethereal, sometimes nearly transparent and other times more solid. Their arms hung limply at their sides; although they seemed to be walking slowly, I couldn't catch up to them—it was truly bizarre.
"Dabao, is that you?!" I shouted as I felt myself running faster and getting nearer to that person. They paused for a moment and stopped. The next second, they turned around, and I finally saw their face—it was almost ghostly pale, with lifeless eyes devoid of any light or color, looking nearly broken!
"Mad Zi..." Dabao slowly opened his mouth after a long while and murmured my name. I immediately rushed over to grab his arms, but my hands passed right through his body, leaving only a chilling sensation on my skin.
"You..." I looked at Dabao in disbelief, worry flashing through my mind as I nervously asked, "What are you doing here? What happened? Are you okay?"
Dabao shook his head; he no longer had his usual liveliness. His expression was blank as if he had endured a great shock. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that his body seemed to be trembling. This made me even more anxious—what could have happened to Dabao to leave him like this?
"Fengfeng, why are you running so fast? Did you discover something?!" Xianxian and the others rushed over one after another. He took a few deep breaths and placed a hand on my shoulder as he asked.
I glanced at Dabao and then looked at Xianxian and the others, noticing that they seemed unaware of Dabao's presence. I forced a smile and said, "No... I..."
"You?" Xianxian looked at me with suspicion, furrowing his brow but not asking anything further.
"Feng Zi, what happened?" Song A also pushed through the crowd and came to my side, looking anxious.
"I thought I saw someone here just now; I must have been mistaken." After saying this, I turned my head to look at Dabao. His expression remained dull, his eyes lifeless, and his body had become somewhat transparent. Suddenly, my heart skipped a beat as an ominous feeling washed over me. I quickly raised my hand to pull Dabao, but before I could reach him, someone grabbed my hand in mid-air. Startled, I followed that hand to its owner and saw a pair of slightly squinted eyes. He gently shook his head and said to his companions, "Everyone take a break for a moment." Then he looked at Pei Zi and asked, "What about you?"
"We'll take a break too," Pei Zi nodded and told his people the same. Soon they all sat down, with some taking out a small Stove from their bags, gathering around it for warmth.
It was already autumn; the weather was naturally cool, and in this Underworld where sunlight hadn't been seen for a thousand years, it was even chillier. Seeing that they hadn't noticed me, I quietly tugged at Dabao again and this time managed to grasp his physical form. I hurriedly pulled him to sit against the wall.
Xianxian was sitting next to me and naturally noticed my little action. His expression had shifted from suspicion to a half-smile. I looked into his eyes, which were deep and unfathomable. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. After a brief silence, I finally said, "Thank you."
If he hadn't suggested taking a break, I really wouldn't have known what to do. With Dabao in this state, communication was nearly impossible. Whether he could even enter the bottle was uncertain, and I couldn't just drag him along; not only would his semi-transparent body be a giveaway, but dragging him would also draw attention to my abnormality, putting Dabao in even greater danger!
"Fengfeng, you really make me more and more curious!" Xianxian lazily leaned against the wall, looking at me with a half-smile.
"Is that so? I'm quite curious about you too," I replied with a forced smile while feeling anxious inside.
After a moment of silence, Xianxian sighed and said, "What are you planning to do?"
I was taken aback for a moment and feigned confusion as I looked at him. Although his expression didn't change much, I knew he had sensed something unusual; perhaps he already knew Dabao's true identity!
"I don't know either." I clenched my fists tightly. Dabao sat beside me, hugging his legs with his head resting on his knees, not saying a word. Normally, he would have jumped up, full of energy and ideas to tease others, but now his dazed expression left me at a loss for what to do.
"Xianxian, his body is almost translucent now. Sometimes I can touch him, sometimes I can't. I'm really afraid that if I'm not careful, he'll just disappear!" I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, saying, "I'm sorry for him. I really wanted to help him by bringing him here. It's all my fault. If I hadn't lost him in the first place, maybe he wouldn't have ended up like this! It's all my fault, all my fault!"
In this situation, I couldn't help but talk to Xianxian. We were sitting relatively far apart, and I spoke softly so that others probably couldn't hear us. I didn't know if Xianxian would blame me for hiding things from him back then, but right now, I absolutely wouldn't abandon Dabao!
"Do you still have your glass bottle?" Xianxian nodded and asked quietly.
"Yes." I quickly nodded in response. Xianxian continued, "There's not much time left. You should try to communicate with him. It would be best if he willingly goes inside. If that doesn't work..."
If that doesn't work? I looked at Xianxian in confusion and saw him smile brightly, revealing a set of silver teeth. He winked playfully and said, "Anyway, we won't be able to see him except for you."
With Xianxian's help at that time, perhaps it would be difficult for others to notice anything unusual? I shook my head helplessly and let out a bitter laugh, realizing that this was the only way forward. Glancing at Pei Zi and Song A, who seemed unaware of what was happening on my side, I turned back to Dabao. I initially wanted to shake him awake but found my hand "passing through" him instead. I had no choice but to retract my hand and whispered, "Dabao, can you hear me?"
Dabao lifted his head to look at me; his eyeballs moved slightly but he didn't speak. I knew he was listening, so I continued, "You..." Clenching the small glass bottle tightly in my hand made it impossible for me to say that he should go back inside it!
After a few seconds of hesitation, looking into his pure yet fading eyes, I could only softly say with a smile, "Stay close to me and don't wander off, okay?"
Dabao nodded and then rested his head back on his knees. I sighed helplessly; at that moment Xianxian patted my shoulder as a silent encouragement. I smiled at him and said, "I'll need your help for cover later."
"Of course." Xianxian replied lazily without hesitation.
