"Several of you, um, I need to go back for a while, I’m afraid I can't..." Cui Ming's face looked pale, beads of sweat faintly visible.
"Brother Cui, are you going into the mountains?" Xiao Xiao's eyes lit up, revealing a hint of excitement. "Can we go with you? I’ve never known there were people living in Hengshan!"
Upon hearing this, Cui Ming's face turned even whiter. He quickly raised his hand and said, "No, no, it's very dangerous!"
Tong Qi, however, was unconcerned. "How dangerous can it be? Besides, if there are people living there, we shouldn't be afraid."
"Right!" Xiao Xiao quickly agreed.
"You all stop making a fuss. Can't you see so many police have gone in? It seems like it's really serious!" Sun Lan had calmed down by this point.
"Feng Zi, what do you think?" A group of people looked at me. I blinked; was this meant for me to decide? Glancing around, I saw curiosity and excitement in Xiao Xiao and Tong Qi's eyes, while Sun Lan and Fu Song appeared more composed and clearly did not want to go. Li Hui looked at me with disdain. As for Rophie, she seemed interested in going but was filled with worry and concern.
Naturally, I didn't want to get involved in this matter; it would be time-consuming and exhausting. Just as I was about to refuse, Cui Ming became anxious. "I'm telling you not to go; I'm not lying. People have gone missing in the mountains before, and they died in very... well, it's very dangerous. This time might be another incident caused by that... Please listen to my advice and don't get involved. I won't take any money; I'll leave soon." With that, he tried to walk away.
"Wait!" Xiao Xiao quickly blocked Cui Ming's path. I noticed her curiosity had intensified even more. Sure enough, she said, "Brother Cui, you know what happened, right? Tell us! We promise we won't disclose anything!"
Cui Ming felt helpless and troubled but ultimately couldn't resist their curiosity and began to explain quietly.
Cui Ming said he had left the village three years ago. Not far from Zhurong Peak were two villages: one called Dahuang Village and the other Little Yellow Village. Ever since he could remember, Cui Ming often heard the elders of the village talk about monsters in the mountains. Although these monsters didn't appear often, whenever they did come out, someone from the village would mysteriously disappear. Those who were found had met a tragic end; their blood was completely drained, and some were even found dismembered...
Cui Ming had witnessed two such incidents himself. Once when he was seven years old, several hunters who entered the mountains never returned. It caused quite a stir among the villagers. Twelve years later, many people had gone missing from the village again; several bodies were discovered, including that of his mother... Cui Ming and his father were heartbroken. The roads in the mountains were impassable and almost isolated from the outside world, leading to poor living conditions. To lessen the burden on his family, Cui Ming reluctantly went out to earn money; he knew his father wanted him to leave because he feared the monsters would come out again.
He just never expected that something would happen after all...
Hearing this, several people showed contemplation in their eyes, mixed with excitement, and a faint aura of adventure seemed to emanate from them. Young and reckless, Tong Qi and the others clearly did not believe in ghosts; not only did they not believe, but their determination to go also became even stronger. "Even special forces have been dispatched; how can we miss out on such a big event? I refuse to believe there are really ghosts in this world. At most, it’s just some wild animals or... human-made. Yes, it could be human-made too!"
"I’ve never seen a ghost before!" Xiao Xiao's cheeks were flushed, her tone both excited and slightly fearful...
Humans are strange creatures; they show little interest in safe places but are drawn to the most dangerous ones. This isn't just about showing off or demonstrating personal courage; it also stems from an innate curiosity!
Curiosity killed the cat, that’s for sure!
"If you’re scared, then don’t go. Tong Qi and I will go, right Tong Qi?" Xiao Xiao said, looking at us with a hint of provocation.
"But what if there really are ghosts?" Rophie asked nervously.
"Don’t worry, I’m here. I won’t let anything happen to you!" I smiled at Rophie, but inside I was helplessly laughing. This matter had already piqued everyone's curiosity. Although I didn’t want to get involved, for the sake of their safety, I had no choice but to go.
Rophie's eyes lit up with joy for a moment before returning to worry. Finally, she seemed to make up her mind and nodded, saying cheerfully, "I believe you!"
"Hehe, since Feng Zi and Rophie are joining, what about you three?" Tong Qi asked the other three.
Fu Song shrugged. "I don’t care; I’m fine with wherever we go."
"Let’s go then! Who’s afraid of whom? But Xiao Lan, I’ll protect you!" Li Hui said sweetly to Sun Lan, an expected response.
With that settled, Cui Ming watched anxiously from the side, his face showing deep confusion.
Cui Ming is kind-hearted; his intention in bringing this matter up was likely to make us aware of its dangers and strangeness in order to dissuade us from going into the mountains. However, his words had the opposite effect, further igniting their curiosity and adventurous spirit.
I didn’t have much to pack; most of my things were in The Dead. I quickly gathered the rest. Cui Ming had already hastily packed some things before hearing about the incident and was ready to leave. So at this moment, it was just him and me; everyone else was busy packing their belongings while Lime was still unaccounted for, and my calls to him went unanswered.
I have no interest in the ghostly happenings in the mountains; I only agreed due to the circumstances. However, I never expected that this unexpected journey would trigger a series of incredible events, seemingly containing a huge secret related to Lime. At this moment, I naturally have no idea about these matters; if I did, such things would not have happened.
I am completely unconcerned about the upcoming journey. Not to mention that I have The Dead at my disposal, even ordinary people cannot defeat me now. Over the past few days, I have learned many techniques from Lime and mastered the control of my breath, how to regulate it freely. In the instant of stopping intense fighting, my breath stabilizes, resembling Qi Gong yet not quite like it; it's very subtle. I feel a surge of energy flowing in my dantian, and recently I haven't been as afraid of the cold!
Suddenly, someone patted my shoulder, and I immediately snapped back to reality. Turning around, I saw Lime standing behind me, looking at me calmly.
"Where did you run off to?" I jumped up in a daze and questioned him.
This ancestor has been unreliable, disappearing at random times. Thankfully, my mental resilience is strong; otherwise, an ordinary person would be scared out of their wits!
Looking at Lime again, he appeared travel-worn, his black hair slightly disheveled. His deep black eyes were calm as the sea, with a high nose bridge and perfectly shaped lips complemented by a gentle chin. This delicate appearance was both indifferent and aloof. My anger dissipated instantly; it felt like whatever I said or did was absorbed without any reaction from him.
I briefly explained the situation while Lime silently gazed outside. I didn't care whether he was listening or not; after rambling on for a while, I picked up my teacup and sipped some tea.
Lime neither confirmed nor denied going; his expression remained unchanged. Cui Ming still seemed reluctant and asked awkwardly, "Are you all really sure you want to go?"
"Don't worry; we won't cause you any trouble," I replied with a smile.
"No, no, no, that's not what I meant." Cui Ming quickly waved his hands. At that moment, everyone else came over with their backpacks. Cui Ming sighed and relented: "Promise me you won't wander around once you're in the mountains, and especially don't leave the village when you get to Village."
We naturally agreed. Then a group of us avoided the watchful eyes of the authorities and stealthily made our way toward Small Yellow Village...
