In the depths of the Old Forest, even the sunlight hesitates to linger. Walking on the jet black vegetation, strange sounds occasionally rise from beneath my feet.
This is the deep mountain Old Forest!
Here, all the vegetation has died!
Here, apart from us few living people, there are no sounds of insects or birds!
Xianxian and I lead the way. The firearms have long been returned by Xianxian to a few others, so now, apart from Fu Song, almost everyone has a gun. I have no intention of giving him one; taking it out now would be too conspicuous. It's better for him to recognize his own capabilities, so he doesn't act unwillingly and lacks motivation.
The wind picks up suddenly, bringing with it an even stronger stench of decay. At the same time, a dangerous aura spreads around us, making me feel as if something in the shadows is watching our every move!
I don't use a gun; I prefer a knife! The dagger I took from the Crystal Coffin is my favorite! It's incredibly sharp, combining the elegance of a sword with the agility and lightness of a dagger. It feels like an extension of my body.
Even though it's midday, the sky has darkened. The wind howls fiercely, stirring up clouds of black mist! The ground is like a swamp; every step is difficult. Finally, after passing through a dense area filled with Death Qi, a small mountain appears before us. "Small" only in comparison to other mountains; it still rises nearly a thousand meters high!
Xianxian takes out an exquisite Luoyang Shovel from her bag. This Luoyang Shovel is compact and retractable, an essential tool for modern Tomb Raiding!
Without further ado, Xianxian drives the modified Luoyang Shovel into the ground, inch by inch, pulling out over ten meters of soil before retrieving a small clump to smell. She then tries several other spots in the same manner and concludes: "About ten meters down is empty; it might be a tunnel or a burial chamber."
"Aren't there any bricks or stones?" Snow Princess asks.
Xianxian shakes her head and casually replies: "There are some places where the texture felt different while digging, but I can confirm that there are no wood or bricks below unless they are hidden deeper underground."
I nod. I can't discern what lies beneath based on smell or texture, but since Xianxian says so, it’s likely accurate. So I say, "Does this mean there’s a high possibility of a tunnel below?"
"Yes," Xianxian nods and looks at me. "I understand what you mean; however..." She pauses for a moment, looking troubled. "The soil here is damp; it could be groundwater, but that smell is very fishy!"
"What about inside?" I point to the nearby mountain body. "Is there any chance that an ancient tomb or cave is hidden inside?"
Zhao Yang timely interjects: "Logically speaking, this area has good terrain and feng shui. However, as we saw when we arrived, all the trees are dead and decaying, and there are no animals at all; it's likely that the feng shui has been disturbed."
"Do you think it could be because of the Mountain Ghost?" Wang Yi asks mysteriously.
Snow Princess nodded in agreement, saying, "It's very likely! Didn't they say Mountain Ghost drinks blood? It's possible that all the animals around here have died, and as for the plants, maybe that Mountain Ghost has devoured all the nutrients out of hunger!"
Xianxian burst into laughter, her hand resting on Snow Princess's shoulder playfully rubbing her snow-white cheek. "Devouring indiscriminately, yes, that's a very fitting description."
"Are you Tomb Raiders?" Fu Song suddenly stared at us and asked.
"No." Xianxian shook her finger, her fox-like eyes sparkling with mischief as she said with a half-smile, "It's us! We're here to celebrate your first entry into the tomb-raiding industry; this exploration will be entrusted to you."
Seeing Fu Song's restrained expression, Xianxian smiled calmly and asked, "What's wrong? Are you scared?"
Xianxian, are you sure you want to scare the kid like this?
Although Fu Song spoke very little and seemed mature for his age, he was genuinely quite young—perhaps just a year or two younger than me.
Xianxian raised an eyebrow and smiled wickedly. I'm just giving him a chance!
Alright, you win!
Seeing the sparkle in Xianxian's eyes, I could only mourn for Fu Song. Kid, good luck to you; Xianxian clearly doesn't trust you, so...
"The provocation tactic won't work on me!" Fu Song said coldly. After a pause, he added, "But I will go scout."
"Oh~ heh heh..." Xianxian laughed. "You said it yourself. Go ahead and check over there; if you're not back in two hours, we won't wait for you." She pointed towards a direction that looked even more desolate.
Fu Song nodded and then turned silently to leave.
"Master Xian, Brother Feng, can we trust that kid?" Wang Yi asked as he watched Fu Song's retreating figure for a moment.
I also looked for a while before shifting my gaze. "When we return this time, you all should investigate. Besides, I will send someone to keep an eye on him." As for who to send, it would naturally be the dead! Although I haven't collected them yet, they will be available when needed. After all, there is still a Ghost Woman among The Dead. That Black Ball has absorbed so much Yin Qi, it won't die even if it stays in the human realm for a day or two.
"Alright, enough chit-chat. You few get to work!" Xianxian said while hugging Snow Princess, pointing at Wang Yi and the others.
Wang Yi chuckled and took his tools along with Gao Liang and Zhao Yang to dig the Tomb Hole.
"Don't we need to help?" I looked at Xianxian, a slight smile playing on my lips.
Snow Princess laid out a bag on the ground and placed her backpack on top of it. Xianxian naturally sat down and said to me, "Haven't you figured out what the boss means yet?"
"Eh?" I looked at him disdainfully. If you're going to be lazy, at least find a decent excuse!
Unaware of himself, Xianxian continued, "Everything relies on the boss to take action. What do we need a bunch of underlings for?"
Seeing the amusement in his eyes, I suddenly found myself at a loss for words to retort. After all, wasn't the original intention of forming The League of Shadows the same? Otherwise, what was the point of establishing this organization if not to resist the mysterious forces behind the scenes and help us with our tasks? "Alright, you win," I conceded with a gesture.
"Just get used to it. Don't act like an old lady, trying to do everything yourself."
"What’s wrong with me doing things myself? I'm proud of it! Who are you calling an old lady?!" I glared at that shameless person and shouted.
"Image! Mind your image!" Xianxian rolled his eyes at me. "It's hard to believe you're one of the three main forces in The League of Shadows when you keep shouting like that!"
"I spit!" I spat at him disdainfully. "You talk about image? You... uh, are you even qualified?!"
Hehehe... Snow Princess stood by, covering her mouth and giggling, her light laughter immediately bringing back my senses.
Taking a deep breath, I decided not to stoop to this scoundrel's level. He just wanted to see me make a fool of myself; let him think about it! Once again donning what I considered a gentle smile, I looked down at Xianxian and said, "Lord Xian, right? I've noticed you're getting more and more annoying. How about we have a little sparring session?"
