“Cough, Brother Qing, are you really going to betray the organization?” Qin Ge wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and asked.
“Is it too late to ask now?” Lime replied calmly.
Qin Ge was taken aback and then bitterly smiled, “If it weren't for this identity, I definitely wouldn't make things difficult for you.”
I was astonished to see that they not only knew each other but also had a relationship. I continued to listen intently.
“With just you few, you can't really make things difficult for me,” Lime said with an unchanged expression, responding indifferently.
“I know,” Qin Ge said with a bitter smile. “It's just that we never expected you would team up with Xia Yuxian.”
Lime did not respond, clearly not wanting to say more. After all, the events had already occurred; did reasons really matter? Besides, Lime was the kind of person who, even with a knife at his throat, would not be forced to speak if he didn't want to.
Lime wasn't someone who disliked talking; he simply couldn't be bothered most of the time. From his eyes, I could see that he had already seen through everything and had lost interest in almost everything. I didn't know what had happened to make him this way, but it was indeed very sad.
Xianxian stood up and walked over to the two of them, looking down from above. “Qin Ge, you've seen it too. With just your few people, even Lime could solve this in a minute. Given how well-behaved you've been these past few days, I advise you to leave quickly and stop challenging our limits of patience!”
Qin Ge also stood up and met Xianxian's gaze without compromise. “I know, but I have my principles. This is a mission; even if it costs me my life, I must complete it!”
“Oh dear, I see you're asking for a beating!” As she spoke, Xianxian rolled up her sleeves, clearly ready for another fight.
Qin Ge raised his head defiantly, looking as if he was ready for anything.
I pushed Xianxian aside and walked in front of Qin Ge, looking calmly into his eyes. “Are you sure you want to go against us?”
"I am just carrying out a mission!" Qin Ge replied without hesitation.
"What mission? Monitoring us?" I asked.
Qin Ge remained silent, indicating his tacit agreement.
Since everyone was just living here, I didn't want to make things too difficult for him, so I asked, "How about we each take a step back?"
Qin Ge paused for a moment and finally nodded.
When we returned to the camp, we saw Zhao Yang sitting on the ground. Upon hearing our voices, he looked over at us.
"Xianxian." Zhao Yang's face relaxed when he saw Xianxian, then he cast a complex glance at Qin Ge but said nothing.
"Thank you for your hard work." Xianxian patted Zhao Yang on the shoulder, then yawned and went into the tent to catch up on sleep.
"Brother Qing, Brother Feng, you should also hurry and rest. I'll keep watch here," Zhao Yang said.
I nodded and mentioned that if I felt tired, I would call someone to take over. Seeing him nod in agreement, I entered the tent to sleep. To be honest, I was indeed feeling a bit tired. So I fell asleep immediately and had a quiet night.
The next day, after we packed our things, we continued on our journey.
"Look, isn't that the Mountain Temple we are heading to!?" someone shouted.
I looked up and saw a corner of the roof peeking out from the mountainside in the distance, built against the mountain. From the back, the entire mountain resembled a Buddha statue. Interestingly, the Mountain Temple was situated right at the "hands" of this "Buddha statue," adding a finishing touch that made the whole mountain appear ethereal.
Nature is truly amazing! Everyone was mesmerized by the natural mountain before them. They danced with joy, except for Qin Ge and his group, who remained cold and indifferent, clearly unimpressed by the mountain. After all, we had seen things far more extraordinary and bizarre.
"Let's hurry up; we should reach the top before dark," Xianxian said.
Everyone agreed and quickly made their way toward Mountain Temple.
...
Finally, night fell, and we arrived at the entrance of Mountain Temple. Looking down, it resembled an abyss, pitch black and easily evoking a sense of fear. That must be Ghost Valley below; even here, I could feel the malevolent aura from underground. No wonder Mountain Ghost chose to settle there; it was indeed a rare good place for beings like them.
Turning back, illuminated by the moonlight, Mountain Temple appeared unusually desolate in the night. There were no lights, no signs of life, and the silence felt eerie.
"Heart Immortal Path!"
The plaque at Mountain Temple displayed three large characters, looking elegant and grand. "This name is quite nice, right, Lime?" I accidentally mentioned his nickname, but fortunately, no one else seemed to notice us. Looking at Lime, he gazed seriously at the plaque above the door, his expression slightly off. But that's just how he is; nothing surprises him anymore.
"Alas, as expected, there's no one living inside," Xiao Xiao said with disappointment on her face.
"It looks creepy; it won't be haunted, will it?" Sun Lan asked quietly.
"Since we're here, let's go in and take a look," Li Hui suggested.
As we opened the decaying wooden door, a long and hoarse creaking sound echoed. The door swung open to reveal a stone path overgrown with weeds leading to a simple courtyard. Facing us was the main building with its door tightly shut, seemingly uninhabited for a long time.
"Is anyone there?" Xiao Xiao shouted loudly. The echo was sparse but received no response.
Looking at the temple before me, I suddenly felt a strange warmth, as if something was beckoning me—familiar yet unfamiliar.
"Fengfeng, why are you in such a hurry to go in?" A hand pulled my arm, jolting me back to reality. I realized that I had unconsciously walked to the door and was about to push it open.
I didn't respond but reflected on how I had ended up at the door so suddenly.
At that moment, everyone gathered around, saying that standing in the courtyard wasn't a good idea and it would be safer to go inside together.
In a daze, I turned back and pushed the door open. As it swung wide, moonlight flooded into the room. My first sight was of a massive Buddha statue sitting in the center, with a large altar beneath it. The incense had long since extinguished, and the candles had burned out.
Stepping inside, a faint scent of sandalwood filled the air, calming my mind involuntarily. I turned on my flashlight and saw that the walls were covered in murals, each one vividly detailed and exquisite. Looking up, I noticed that even the beams were carved with various images; each wall depicted something different. For instance, the wall behind the Buddha was adorned with various Bodhisattvas from Buddhism, reminding me of a saying: "You never discuss politics in your lifetime, only your compassion for the world." Such compassion for humanity flows unconsciously from those who possess it.
On the left wall, there were carvings depicting the myriad aspects of life, seemingly observing humanity with a detached perspective—suffering and joy, life and death, birth, aging, illness, and demise; fortune and misfortune! It is fate and destiny. The world is filled with countless sufferings; despite myriad emotions, one cannot intervene. The ignorant masses are watched coldly by immortals; this is both arrogance and sorrow.
Moving to the right wall, I saw depictions of earth and trees. The vast land and lush trees exuded a powerful life force that seemed to pour into my heart like a spring. Gazing at this painting, I felt the breath of the earth—everlasting, substantial, and insurmountable!
A seed falls to the ground and grows into a towering tree; it withstands wind and rain and thunder without faltering, still standing proudly between heaven and earth. I seemed to glimpse the broad-mindedness of the artist who created this piece; only someone with such a heart for the world could produce such a monumental work about the earth!
Finally, as I looked at the paintings on either side of the door, I couldn't help but be astonished!
Humans, earth, heaven—was it indeed all leading back to the underworld?
