The road ahead was no longer wide; not only were there caves of varying sizes appearing, but the blood-red color beneath our feet also grew deeper and more vivid, almost resembling liquid as it flowed slowly.
Before we could even feel alarmed, day suddenly turned to night!
Everything was pitch black, and our eyes were unable to see anything due to this rapid change. We did not stop; instead, we quickly turned on our flashlights. At that moment, apart from the chaotic footsteps, the commotion behind us grew louder.
"What was that sound?" Black Bear asked, startled.
"Who knows?" Wang Yi replied cautiously, forcing calmness into his voice.
"You go check it out." Without needing to say more, a member from the newly joined Spirit Department was sent to investigate. That person quickly left. We continued running forward until the one who went to check returned, rushing to my side. His already dark purple face looked even worse. "Phoenix Head, it's bad! There are many dead people coming towards us from behind!"
I nodded in shock and hurriedly relayed this news to the other two.
Lime seemed to have anticipated this situation and was not overly surprised, while Xianxian reacted similarly to me, cursing under her breath as she searched for a way forward with her flashlight.
Even with three flashlights turned on simultaneously, it was difficult to see clearly around us, especially with the winding path and the sharp protrusions on the ice walls; one misstep could lead to slipping or getting injured.
With corpses chasing from behind and the ground slippery beneath us, despite our rapid pace, we had actually slowed down considerably. The noise from behind grew louder; the entire space echoed with the sound of "thud thud thud," which was the sound of feet colliding with ice!
"This broken ice... ah!" Just as I heard Black Bear's voice, there was suddenly a muffled grunt followed by a crash. I turned around to see Black Bear had slipped and fallen, dragging Wang Yi down with him.
"Everyone hold on tight and prepare for battle!" Xianxian cursed as she stopped. Just after saying that, she had already loaded her gun and turned on the flashlight, ready for combat at any moment.
I also switched on my flashlight and kept a vigilant watch behind us. At this point, Wang Yi and Black Bear had gotten back up from the ice surface. Wang Yi held his gun while reproaching Black Bear irritably, "You can even fall while running away; I really don't understand why Boss Pei chose you, you idiot!"
Black Bear looked innocent. "Wang Ge, I didn't want this either! But this is ice! Ice! Do you understand? As for why Boss Pei chose me, it's obviously because I'm very capable!" Black Bear said proudly, though there was a slight tremor in his voice.
Wang Yi didn't bother arguing with him and retreated towards us while holding his gun. He asked warily, "What is chasing us? It sounds like there are a lot of them!"
"What, what is that?" The Black Bear trembled and retreated behind us, his behavior not matching his nickname.
"It should be those corpses!" I said.
"Corpses? They've risen?" Wang Yi became even more alert upon hearing this, clearly ignoring the word "should," as we all knew the situation behind us was dire.
Xianxian spoke in a low voice, "I'm afraid so!"
They're coming!!
The atmosphere of anticipation was extremely heavy. It had barely been a minute when the true appearance of the pursuers emerged from the light, and what a sight it was!
In that moment, I almost recalled the long-haired corpses that had burst forth in the Ghost Clan Tomb! They were like wild horses unleashed, charging forward with unstoppable momentum. The difference was that these corpses were mostly short-haired modern people; although some of their skin appeared to be rotting, overall, their faces and bodies were all a purplish hue. Moreover, due to the cold, each one had varying degrees of cracks on their bodies—frostbite!
"Fire!"
Bang bang bang! The loud gunfire erupted almost simultaneously. The purplish corpses in front kept falling down, but almost in the next moment, more corpses surged forward, wave after wave, seemingly endless!
"Wang Yi!" Xianxian shouted. Wang Yi responded with an "Uh," then said, "Master Xian, you all crawl forward."
"Hey hey hey, why do I feel like there are so many gunshots?" The Black Bear asked frantically while firing his weapon.
"Enough, idiot! That's just an echo!" Wang Yi quickly retorted to the Black Bear before tossing a package into the pile of corpses. With the Spirit Department members providing cover fire, we all lay flat on the icy surface and began crawling forward with all four limbs.
A tremendous explosion and strong vibrations hit at the same time; the ground shook violently, and the entire ice surface trembled. The screams behind us were drowned out by the sound of the explosion. Even with our hands over our ears, we could still feel our eardrums being threatened and our heads nearly splitting apart!
Beams of light illuminated the ice surface, and I was astonished to see countless cracks suddenly appearing and spreading at an astonishing speed! What is most feared when one is on ice?
That's right—sudden cracks!
Imagine playing on the surface of Ice Lake when suddenly the ice beneath your feet cracks. What does that feel like? Shock? Terror? Panic?
We find ourselves in an unknown expanse of ice, completely unaware of what lies beyond it. We don't even know how we got here! The hidden fear and anxiety deep within us are magnified in that moment!
I force myself to suppress my unease and shine the flashlight towards the explosion site.
Contrary to what I imagined, a large hole has completely opened up in the ice! The corpses behind us continue to rush forward, falling one after another into the black hole without any awareness, instinctively attacking without thought!
Looking up at the ice above, I realize with a start that it is filled with terrifying cracks! It resembles a mirror that has been struck by a fist, and I can't tell when it will shatter completely, pouring down upon us and leading to being buried alive!
"How could this happen?" Wang Yi's eyes are filled with fear, his face showing helplessness and guilt. "It's all my fault!"
Wang Yi blames himself for not controlling his strength. Just as I was about to comfort him, Xianxian casually said, "It seems the ice here isn't as hard as the outer layer. It's not your fault; everyone needs to be careful from now on. Let's slowly crawl away from here."
As soon as Xianxian finished speaking, a clear voice rang out: "Don't move."
"Why?" The Black Bear was already terrified by the scenes unfolding before him and froze at Lime's voice, stiffly asking.
We all looked at Lime, who frowned slightly and said, "The ice can't support our weight anymore. Everyone gather together to minimize casualties!"
Although this was indeed the case, hearing Lime say it still left a bitter taste in my heart. But feeling upset was pointless; both beneath our feet and above our heads, those cracks looked truly alarming. It's hard to imagine what would happen if they completely broke apart and fell.
"Come over here!" I called out to the spirits of the Spirit Department standing around.
"Ah, oh!" The Black Bear thought I was talking to him and quickly crawled over. I said nothing more as He Cheng and the others came one by one. After gathering them all into The Dead, Xianxian asked, "Is that enough?"
I nodded. There were only five of us left here now, and as we slowly crawled together, the sounds of cracking echoed around us like “crack” “crack.” Our situation truly felt like “walking on thin ice,” filled with trepidation!
In just a couple of seconds, I suddenly felt the ground beneath my feet give way. We had no time to prepare, and we fell abruptly. Looking up at the crack above us that seemed on the verge of collapsing, I felt a surge of anxiety.
"I got it!" Xianxian shouted as they fell alongside me. The few people closest to me had already grabbed each other's hands. Seeing Xianxian's right hand reaching out to me, I didn't hesitate and grabbed it immediately. However, without any solid point to hold onto during the fall, it took several tries before I finally caught hold.
"Damn it!" As I held onto Xianxian with one hand and shone my flashlight downwards with the other, I couldn't help but curse.
The ice blocks were falling faster than we were, and naturally, the ground below was covered in ice. But who could tell me why all the ice below was pointed upwards towards us? At this rate, if we didn't prepare ourselves, we would either be impaled or die from the fall!
"Oh my God, I'm going to die! I'm going to die!" Black Bear shouted in panic.
"Shut up!" Wang Yi snapped back, clearly agitated, and then fell silent.
At that moment, I saw Xianxian suddenly turn to me and ask quickly, "Fengfeng, do you have a parachute?"
"A parachute? Oh right! I think I actually do!" Suddenly remembering that I had bought quite a few parachutes last time due to a lingering psychological fear after jumping off a cliff, I searched through the clutter in The Dead and accurately found where the parachutes were stored.
We five held hands, with me on the far left. Due to the darkness, the two on that side couldn't possibly see where I was retrieving things from in this situation. So I simply pulled out parachutes directly from The Dead. After some effort, we finally had one for each person.
Once we opened the parachutes, our descent indeed slowed down significantly. However, time was not on our side; we were already nearing the ground. At this speed, we still wouldn't make it!
Just as we were about to be pierced by the ice below us, suddenly there was a loud "bang," and I felt a powerful gust of wind rush past me. Then, all the sharp ice points beneath us were severed cleanly. Almost simultaneously, we five crashed heavily downwards.
