"A submarine. Yes, while you were unconscious," I said without a hint of embarrassment.
Wang Yi and Black Bear praised me repeatedly, excitedly shouting beside me. Seeing this, I couldn't help but smile. Xianxian was pretending to "remote control" things, while Lime stood quietly nearby, the flickering flames reflecting in his dark eyes, completely unreadable.
The fire burned for over an hour, the strong smell of smoke and charred flesh filling the space, making it nauseating! Reluctantly, we had to put on our Gas Masks.
"Strange, the equipment you found is quite complete!" Black Bear's eyes sparkled with excitement.
I shook my head helplessly and smiled, "You should consider how long you all slept." The implication was that we had plenty of time to find equipment while they were out cold; I let them fill in the blanks themselves.
With flashlights in hand, we moved forward step by step. The ice beneath us had started to melt due to the fire, wet and covered in bright red liquid, making it feel like we were in a Blood Sea—extremely unsafe.
Ahead lay a Trench, where the Zombies had been. The Corpses were already charred and almost fused into a large mass, dark and indistinct, barely resembling human shapes.
I looked on indifferently, hoping to find a shred of guilt within me, but all I felt was a sense of secret delight—delight that they were all dead, completely dead...
After watching for a while, I noticed there wasn't a single ghost around; so many had died, yet not one soul remained!
Without thoughts or souls, they were nothing more than mindless corpses driven by animal instinct. What on earth was happening here?
"Let's go," Xianxian said as she patted my shoulder.
Go? Step over these charred bodies stuck together? I forced a bitter smile and nodded.
Looking ahead, the sensation underfoot was not hard, resembling dry branches and decayed leaves. With each step, there was a crunching sound, but I knew clearly that what I was stepping on was neither dry branches nor decayed leaves; it was people—dead people.
You ask me how I feel inside right now? Huh, I can only say my heart is numb...
"How do we proceed now?" After reaching the ice wall, Black Bear's enthusiasm vanished, and he asked in disbelief.
"We can't blow it up. How about melting it with fire?" Wang Yi pondered for a moment, but as soon as he finished speaking, Black Bear jumped up and quickly said no: "What if we accidentally crack or collapse the ice? No way!" Black Bear shook his head vigorously.
"Then what do you suggest?" Wang Yi crossed his arms and looked at Black Bear.
Black Bear blinked and tentatively suggested, "How about chiseling a hole in the ice?"
Wang Yi was clearly at a loss for words. "Your method isn't necessarily better than using fire! Let's listen to the opinions of the three brothers!" He then turned to us three.
"Let's use fire," I said.
"Okay," Xianxian raised an eyebrow in agreement.
Lime nodded slightly but remained silent.
In the end, we decided to use fire. Wang Yi volunteered to lead the way, so I handed him the flamethrower. Since it would be operated at close range, remote control wasn't needed; just manual control would suffice.
Wang Yi led the way with the flamethrower while Xianxian, Lime, Black Bear, and I followed behind. Although the light was concentrated, I could still see the blood-red ice gradually melting ahead of us. Especially on the ice wall beside us that had melted, a path had emerged, but water—no, "blood"—was continuously dripping from around the hole!
Blood dripped onto my face; it felt a bit icy and cold. The sound of dripping echoed in this unusually quiet space, creating an eerie atmosphere. Before long, all of us were covered in "blood."
"You really look like a Blood Corpse!" After shining the flashlight on my face, Xianxian suddenly teased with a laugh, "With that getup of yours, I think you could go straight into a horror movie without even needing makeup!"
I shot him a glare and replied, "I don't see you looking any better!"
Just as Xianxian was about to retort, Wang Yi's excited voice came from ahead, "Hey, it's open! Master Xian, there's a hole up ahead. Wait, there seems to be something in there!" As he spoke, Wang Yi suddenly turned around with a bloodied face. The horrifying look was so shocking that if I hadn't been composed, I would have punched him.
Xianxian wiped some of the "blood" off his face and then reached out to poke the inside of my arm, smearing it all over my clothes while casually asking Wang Yi, "What is it?"
"What are you staring at? Never seen a handsome guy before?" Xianxian asked me with an arrogant expression.
I was already exasperated, looking at him with a face full of disbelief. With his bloodied appearance and that annoying expression, I really couldn't see what was handsome about him!
Wang Yi seemed very accustomed to Xianxian's occasional antics and continued talking to himself ahead, "I think I saw a lot of shadows?"
"Shadows?" Black Bear asked in surprise.
I shone the flashlight forward, just behind Wang Yi, and indeed, after the fire had melted part of the area ahead, a hole appeared. Peering through it and shining the light inside revealed several shadows!
Without wasting more words, we stepped into the newly opened dark hole. It was narrow enough for only two people to walk side by side. Inside the hole, the ice was still blood-red, resembling a cave.
"Damn it, finally no more dripping blood!" Black Bear panted behind us.
Since there was no fire in this hole, the ice naturally hadn't melted or dripped water. We didn't comment on it because we were getting closer to those shadows!
The ground beneath us was uneven and pitted. As the flashlight illuminated the distant figures, some light reflected back, creating a flickering effect.
Walking on thin ice, I finally arrived around those figures and was taken aback to discover that what we were seeing were actually ice people! The path ahead was blocked, but above the ice people's heads, there was a circular passage where the flashlight beam couldn't reach.
"Why does this person look somewhat familiar?" Xianxian stood in front of one of the ice people, shining the flashlight on its face with a serious expression. I turned my head to take a look and was immediately stunned...
Not only did it look familiar, but this person, this ice person's appearance was exactly like my dad! From body shape to physique, it seemed to be carved from the same mold. It was crystal clear, not red ice but rather slightly blue.
I didn't know how these ice figures were formed, but I initially concluded that my dad had likely been here! A surge of joy began to fill my heart—had he also come here? Could he be somewhere among them? I was eager to rush out and find him!
"This one?" Wang Yi's flashlight beam also shone over. He glanced at the ice person and then at me, frowning as if unsure of what to say.
"What do you think?" Xianxian nudged me with her elbow and asked.
I couldn't help but smile, my eyes fixed on the ice figure in front of me as I firmly said, "I want to find him!"
"I knew you would say that!" Xianxian sighed helplessly, looking at the several ice people and added, "As of now, we can only say they have been here, but when they came or whether they left is still unknown. Just relax a bit."
"How can you expect me to relax!" I clenched my fists in frustration. We had already faced life-and-death situations to get here; without The Dead, we might have frozen to death long ago. What equipment could my dad have had? Here, there were no warm clothes or food or water—could anyone survive a day?
Thus, after seeing this ice person, the initial joy in my heart was replaced by worry and fear. I couldn't imagine what I would feel if the next moment revealed not a living person inside but a corpse—I truly couldn't imagine!
The purpose of descending into this place was solely to find my dad! That goal remained unchanged even now. Therefore, I really couldn't bear the thought of my dad being dead; our family would be left with just me alone, completely in the dark about any secrets!
"Let's leave this place," Lime suddenly spoke up.
I slowly raised my head to look at him, suddenly losing my ability to think as I gazed into the endless black hole above and murmured, "How do we leave?"
Lime's eyes were very dark, but there seemed to be a glimmer of light flashing within them. He drew two exquisite Black Daggers from his waist, the blades reflecting a faint shine, much like the sharpness hidden in his current gaze.
"I told you to calm down!" Xianxian said with a helpless smile as she also took out a dagger and gestured to me, "Lime means we should use these to climb up."
"No way!" The Black Bear was the first to jump up, his face filled with disbelief. "We're supposed to use this thing to climb to the top?"
"Although it's a bit forced, it should be worth a try!" Wang Yi's eyes sparkled with determination.
Looking at the four sharp daggers, I nodded and sat down at the foot of the Ice Man. "Let's replenish our strength first; we don't want to fall halfway up."
"You jinx!" Xianxian complained but still sat down, pulling out some compressed beef from her bag to eat.
Lime also sat down, and after finishing his food, he closed his eyes to rest.
Time passed slowly, and before I knew it, I opened my eyes to see that Xianxian and Lime had fallen asleep. Just as I lowered my gaze, I noticed a soft blue light suddenly illuminating from behind me. I slowly raised my head and turned around, only to find that the gentle blue glow was emanating from the Ice Man!
I stared in shock, almost forgetting to think as the light from the Ice Man grew stronger. Suddenly, a foot stepped out from within, followed by another foot, then the body, arms, and head...
That familiar face looked somewhat aged yet spirited; at that moment, he smiled gently at me with slightly squinted eyes...
