"I have been waiting for you for a long time," he said.
I tightly closed my mouth, and all the words I had thought of saying were suddenly lost at this moment.
His weathered face was already marked with many wrinkles, and the once stern eyes now held a hint of melancholy. He sighed and said, "I knew you would come, but seeing you still disappoints me, Zier. Why did you come?" His loving gaze turned cold in an instant, even tinged with reproach.
"Why can't I come!" I shouted, the frustration that had been building up finally pouring out at that moment. Before he could respond, I sneered, "Dad, my dear father! I just want to ask one thing: am I really a member of the Feng Family? Am I really your biological son?" The last question slipped out before I could stop myself, and it was too late for regret; I could only stare at him.
My dad seemed very angry. "You brat, do you know what you're saying?"
"Why don't you tell me anything?" I didn't answer immediately. After a pause to calm myself, I asked, "Dad, is that Cat's Eye Stone Bracelet really something a fortune teller gave me when I was a child?"
"Of course it is!" my dad replied irritably. "They said you were not well as a child. There are some things I didn't tell you for your own good. Why can't you understand that?"
"I'm not a child anymore; there are some things I need to know!" I looked into his eyes and spoke clearly, word by word. Yes, I need to know; I won't regret it!
"Is this the life you want?" My dad sighed, gesturing at the surrounding ice blocks and waving his hand. "Go back; don't investigate any further!"
I frowned. Although I knew they were truly looking out for me, I still felt very dissatisfied inside!
"I won't go back." Taking a deep breath, I said calmly.
"You?" My dad pointed at me with an expression of disappointment.
I smiled bitterly, "It's too late. We've come this far; it's not something that can just be abandoned." Not to mention that the League of Shadows has already been formed, I can't leave at will. The enemies we face, whether it's the Black Blade, the Golden Eagle Sect, or the mysterious Divine Hand, they won't let me go easily.
Most importantly, I won't abandon my brothers! We share both fortune and misfortune. Although I never made a verbal promise, my actions have already shown it.
"Forget it!" My father sighed, seeming to age several years in an instant. Guilt surged within me, but I had no other choice!
“Dad, you tell me, you…” Before I could finish, a blue light began to emanate from my father, and gradually, bit by bit, it started to disappear!
“No!” I ran over in panic, reaching out to grab him, but all I caught was the dissipating blue light. No matter how desperately I tried to grasp it or shouted out, I could only watch helplessly as my father's body gradually faded away until the last trace of blue light vanished, plunging everything into darkness!
The cold aura nearly swallowed me whole; breathing became increasingly difficult, and my head felt more and more dizzy.
Bang!
I suddenly woke up, opening my eyes to see several heads right in front of me, bloodied and even smelling of Blood Stench! Before my brain could process what was happening, my fists were already flying.
I heard two pained cries as one person grumbled, "Lucky I dodged quickly. You bastard, trying to murder your own husband!"
Coming back to my senses, I saw Xianxian standing about a meter in front of me with a mischievous expression while two people on the ground were covering their eyes in shock as they looked at me. I shot Xianxian a glare and shouted without thinking, "Screw you!"
"Hey hey, don't be angry; it was just a joke," Xianxian quickly apologized, though he looked like a sly fox and was incredibly annoying.
I rolled my eyes at him, stretched my neck a bit, and then stood up. Looking at the ice man beside me with no change at all confirmed it; I had just been dreaming!
"What's wrong, did you have a nightmare?" Xianxian teased.
I ignored him, stretched my muscles, and said to Lime, "Lime, I think we've rested enough. Shall we head out now?"
"Yeah," Lime replied, then stood up, equipped himself, and took out two daggers, looking ready for action.
I glanced at Wang Yi and Black Bear, who were covering their eyes, and said helplessly, "Can you guys make it up?"
"Yes, yes!" Black Bear nodded vigorously.
"I can too!" Wang Yi chuckled.
I nodded and turned back just in time to hear Black Bear whispering to Wang Yi, "Brother Wang, this Brother Feng's strength is really something! It completely doesn't match his appearance!"
"I told you guys about it long ago!" Wang Yi replied irritably, but I could sense a hint of pride in his tone.
Xianxian quickly got ready as well, pulling out two daggers and confidently declaring, "OK, ready to go!"
I fixed the flashlight directly onto my head this time, so I didn't need to bite it. Actually, I had bought several headlamps that could switch between strong and weak light; however, I had forgotten to take them out and distribute them earlier. So for now, I had to make do with this setup. After all, my bag was limited in size, and even if I found more items, it wouldn't be possible to carry everything. To avoid raising their suspicions, I decided not to use the headlamp for now.
After securing my backpack, I took out a dagger and forcefully stabbed it into the ice. It went in easily. After poking around a few times and carving out four depressions where we could step in with our shoes, I took one last look at the ice man and resolutely began to climb up.
The process of climbing was extremely arduous; not only did we need to create four footholds first, but we also had to control the distance and force carefully. There were only five of us now. Since Wang Yi was the largest and heaviest among us, he followed right behind Lime without needing to carve any holes—he simply stepped on the places Lime had already made.
The Black Bear was the same, following behind Xianxian. This required both Lime and Xianxian to be more careful and firm with their strength.
My hands were almost numb. Fortunately, although these red ice blocks looked extremely dangerous, they were quite hard and wouldn’t break apart with just one strike or fall down all at once. But as the saying goes, every advantage comes with a disadvantage; while a thick ice layer was a good thing, it also meant that a lot of force was needed to break through.
I gripped the dagger tightly with both hands; while one was striking, the other dagger had to be fully inserted, otherwise it would be easy to fall backward.
I kept repeating this tedious and cautious action. My back was already soaked with sweat; there was no wind, yet I could still feel a penetrating chill. Gradually, my sweat-drenched clothes became cold and stiff, and with each step upward, my body felt sore from the friction!
Indeed, high-tech gear was still not enough!
Once we got out of this situation, I would definitely ask Wang Yi to find someone to make a pair of climbing shoes. These shoes not only needed to be very sturdy but also have dagger tips that could be attached; that way, I could just step directly into the ice without having to drill one small hole after another...
Damn it, this is truly not a job for humans!
I had been too afraid to look down; I had slipped several times already. If it weren’t for the daggers being inserted deep enough and my tight grip, I would have fallen countless times by now.
“Brothers, I... I really can’t climb anymore!” the Black Bear gasped as he spoke.
As soon as the Black Bear finished speaking, he was ruthlessly scolded by Wang Yi, “How dare you say that? Don’t you see what you’re doing? Look at what those three brothers above are doing; they haven’t complained yet, and you’re the first to cry out! If I were Pei Zi, I would have kicked you over long ago!”
“I’m wronged!” the Black Bear lamented, panting heavily. “I finally understand what you said at the beginning. Those three brothers up there don’t seem like normal people at all; they’re even more impressive than our Boss Pei. Today has truly opened my eyes; even if I fall to my death, it would be worth it.”
“Enough of the nonsense! Conserve your strength and keep climbing! If you fall and die, no one will collect your body. I’ll laugh myself to death when we get out!” Wang Yi’s stamina had always been good, but now he too felt overwhelmed despite his determination.
Listening to the conversation between the two of them, my mind felt a blur, as if buzzing yet unable to hear anything clearly.
My mouth was very dry, but I dared not drink water. My stomach was very hungry, but I dared not eat anything. I was afraid that if I slipped up, all my efforts would be in vain!
But there was only one voice in my head: persist! Persist! Keep persisting!
I had to hold on!
I was almost out of strength, and my hands were shaking uncontrollably, but looking up, it seemed there was still a long way to go! After resting for a few seconds, I glanced at Lime and Xianxian beside me; their hands were also trembling with visible veins bulging.
“No, I can’t do it anymore. Let’s take a break!” Xianxian said wearily.
“Three minutes,” Lime replied, his tone filled with exhaustion. Since he was right next to me, I could see that Lime's hair was completely soaked with sweat, and due to the air conditioning, it looked like there was a layer of white frost on it.
Next to Lime was Xianxian. I didn’t dare to move too much to look over, but just by seeing Lime's condition, I knew that neither Xianxian nor the two below us were in any better shape.
We were already covered in "blood," and now we looked so disheveled. If I weren’t involved, even I would mistakenly think we were some kind of monsters. I just hoped that when we climbed up, we wouldn’t run into anyone else; otherwise, it would scare them, and it would be detrimental to us!
While thinking this, I heard Wang Yi's voice: “Black Bear, what are you doing?”
“Ah? Huh?” Black Bear suddenly exclaimed. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that half of Black Bear's body was already leaning backward! He looked like he was about to fall off and frantically waved his hands before grabbing Xianxian's leg...
