Chapter 250: Crossroads
The structure of this Underworld is quite different from that of the Ancient Tomb, at least in my view. My impression of ancient tombs, as shown on television, is that they are damp and filled with dirt. However, the places we have visited, including the previous Ghost Clan Tomb, appear very clean and tidy, certainly not like what is depicted on TV.
Although it is clean and tidy, the eerie and terrifying atmosphere remains unchanged. Just a few minutes after entering, we encountered the legendary Ferocious Beast Gu Diao and a Zongzi. The path ahead? Smooth sailing? Not a chance!
"Be careful!"
With a crack, the alert warning from Divine Hand immediately rang out. In the darkness, I could only hear a series of faint clinks. Within just a few seconds, the sound of arrows slicing through the air began to echo, accompanied by a rain of arrows shooting towards us.
Swords and daggers were drawn, and a few people who were slightly slower did not manage to dodge in time and were hit by several iron ancient arrows.
Bang bang bang! The clash of blades and arrows filled the air with noise. Thanks to Yang Bin and the others helping me from the front, I did not suffer much harm; instead, Divine Hand's group took some hits. I had thought that the arrows would shoot at us from the sides, but unexpectedly they came directly from in front of us, catching everyone off guard.
The dense rain of arrows lasted for about half a minute. Everyone dared not relax even for a moment; life and death depended on this very situation.
Moreover, since the arrows were coming straight from the front, I deduced that there must be a fork in the road ahead—perhaps a single turn or maybe a double turn; in any case, there was definitely no path straight ahead. With this judgment in mind, we stepped over the arrows on the ground and continued moving forward without pause.
The injured tended to their wounds silently. Aside from the occasional footsteps, the tunnel was eerily quiet.
"Hey, what's going on?"
After walking for a long time, at least twenty minutes, there was still no wall in sight ahead! What on earth is going on? Even if I am someone who doesn't understand how mechanisms work, I know that after such a long distance, even the most powerful arrows would lose a significant amount of force by the time they reached us. Moreover, whether they could even hit us is still a question. But now, after walking such a long distance, we have not seen any place that could activate a mechanism. If I had accidentally overlooked something, it would be understandable, but the key is that I am not the only one here; their alertness and observational skills are not inferior to mine. Especially Divine Hand and Kong Guayan, whose abilities I would never underestimate.
"Could it be a ghost wall?" Evil Bird asked suspiciously.
"A ghost wall? If there were ghosts here, wouldn't the brothers over there with Feng Xiao Ge be able to see them?" White Two replied helplessly, but while saying this, he glanced at me as if expecting me to provide an answer.
"Tch." Evil Bird scoffed and stubbornly said, "I think maybe it's because they lack skill; after all, the ghosts here, including Zongzi, are not ordinary characters!"
Lack of skill?
That's hard to say. I looked at Yang Bin and the others; they were also looking at me with suspicion. Clearly, they all knew their "age." Before encountering me, they couldn't even manifest a "physical form." They had only been recuperating in The Dead for a short month or two; in such a brief time, how could they compare to those ancient beings with thousands of years of experience?
Evil Bird's words not only awakened the others but also made us realize that Yang Bin and his group wouldn't have much of an advantage here! If they encountered a powerful ghost with deep skills, they would likely be in trouble. Thinking about this made me anxious; this time, apart from Yang Bin and his few companions still by my side, everyone else was scattered throughout this vast Underworld! If anything happened to them...
"Feng Xiao Ge, you don't need to worry. They are all very capable individuals and will definitely not act alone," Yang Bin comforted me.
One of them quickly chimed in, "Yeah, Brother Jiang told us never to act alone. I'm sure they're also moving in pairs, hehe~"
"Mm." I nodded; naturally, I hoped everyone would be safe. Although I didn't have strong feelings for this group from the Spirit Department, I couldn't afford to lose them either; I didn't want to recruit again.
In the human world, life and death should follow Reincarnation. Aside from those who died unjustly in the Mass Grave and still wander the earth with resentment, where would there be any ghosts? Even if there were some, over time, without sufficient spiritual energy for maintenance, they would eventually dissipate. So this is also why I haven't seen many ghosts on the road.
"Divine Hand, there are three forks ahead; which way should we go?" Regardless of any decision, Evil Bird and his group always asked Divine Hand. I think their trust in Divine Hand is similar to our trust and reliance on Lime. They are all powerful independents with an attractive aura about them.
As we spoke, we had already arrived at a fork in the road. Ahead of us was a dark straight passage, resembling a "T" shape, with endless straight paths on both sides. No matter which way we went, we had no idea what we would encounter.
Divine Hand pondered deeply, carefully searching for something at the crossroads. The others were also looking for any suspicious markings or signs.
Countless people had come to this place; we were neither the first nor the last group. To be safe, I thought it best to carve a mark first. But what should I carve? It needed to be something that Xianxian and Lime would recognize as my mark. As I thought about it, it seemed we hadn't discussed this before! Well, never mind, I’ll just carve my name! Just "Zi"!
Of course, this was something I would do before leaving, so I joined the search for clues. If it were my dad, I wouldn't know what information he would leave behind. But if it were Lime, it would likely be that pattern resembling the character "Mu." So I searched and searched until my eyes felt strained, yet I still couldn't find anything.
"Go this way." Suddenly, Divine Hand pointed to the left passage, giving me a half-smile before leading the group onward.
Did he see some kind of marking? There was no time to think too much; I quickly carved a "Zi" and hurried to catch up. Since Divine Hand and the others had separated from Qinglong, there must have been a reason! I wondered what secret they had discovered. In any case, following them was definitely better than wandering around alone!
