Chapter 252: Encounter and Wandering
With Xianxian's presence, I felt a bit more secure, but as the days passed, my anxiety grew. The main purpose of coming here was to save my dad, and the secondary goal was to uncover the truth. However, after wandering for several days, I had yet to see another person. How could I not feel anxious?
"Is this place really an ancient tomb?" I sat against the wall, feeling utterly bored. How many days had it been? We were still wandering through the same passageways and chambers. I couldn't believe that this place was so vast that we could walk for days and still find ourselves in the same corridors and the same Ear Chamber!
"It is indeed suspicious," Xianxian said, leaning beside me, equally concerned.
Over there, they must have noticed something was off as well. A few of them were exchanging thoughts. "Although we are not circling in the same place, we are indeed trapped."
"Damn it, this is really eerie!" Evil Bird said angrily.
"I wonder how Boss Pei and the others are doing..." Black Bear also seemed unusually sentimental. After all, he could only rely on me and Xianxian now; the dozens of people from Divine Hand were watching him closely. (In reality, they didn't take him seriously at all... Those who are guilty often think others view them in the same light.)
After resting for a moment, we continued on our way. Because of Divine Hand's presence, Xianxian and I dared not eat or drink too much. We only had one bag between us, and aside from tools, we couldn't carry much food or water. So we had to make it look like we were rationing.
The Dead could be considered a "divine artifact," and it was possible they might covet it and try to seize it by force; they had done such things before.
...
"Listen, what sound is that?" Xianxian suddenly nudged me with her elbow and asked alertly.
"What sound?" I listened carefully, puzzled, and heard the "tap tap tap" of footsteps and the sound of heavy breathing. What other sounds were there? I looked at Xianxian, who raised his eyebrows at me, urging me to listen more closely.
Feeling a bit tense because of him, I closed my eyes and listened quietly for a moment. Besides the footsteps and everyone's breathing, it seemed there really was something approaching slowly. When I opened my eyes again, I saw Xianxian and Divine Hand pressing their ears against the wall, while some even crawled on the ground to listen. Seeing this, I followed suit and pressed my ear against the wall. Sure enough, there was a "thump thump thump" sound, like rhythmic drumming, along with some chaotic noises that seemed to be getting louder.
"Be careful, something is coming!" Just as Xianxian finished speaking, Black Bear ran up behind us, swallowing hard as he asked, "What is it? Is it Zongzi again?"
"Doesn't seem like it." I frowned; it was impossible to tell what it was just by the sound. We could either wait here or go ahead to investigate. This task would decisively fall to Yang Bin and the others.
In the blink of an eye, Yang Bin and his group had left, but those of us remaining became increasingly vigilant.
"I'll go take a look too!" After Yang Bin's group left, I felt uneasy waiting around and couldn't calm myself down, so I said a quick word before running forward.
"Wait for me!" I had barely taken a few steps when Xianxian caught up with me. The two remaining members of the Spirit Department who hadn’t gone to scout also followed us. The three of us ran forward while listening intently to the sounds around us.
The "thump thump" sound grew louder yet quieter at the same time. Xianxian and I exchanged glances and instinctively turned off our flashlights. Perhaps because they had heard our footsteps earlier, there was a moment of hesitation in the sounds ahead, but they still continued coming toward us.
Footsteps? Is it a person?
As soon as I turned on my flashlight, a figure quickly appeared in front of us. Before I could even see his movements clearly, I felt a chill at my neck as someone grabbed my collar. Outnumbered two to one, we immediately started fighting back.
But before we could exchange more than a couple of blows, I recognized the person we were grappling with and quickly stepped aside, shining my flashlight on their face. Clearly, we all recognized each other; before we could celebrate our reunion, Lime said with a pale face, "Run!" Without waiting for us to react, he pulled us forward.
"What happened? What’s behind us?" Xianxian asked Lime while running, his face showing both joy and confusion. Indeed, the person who had just run over was Lime. Thankfully I had turned on my flashlight; otherwise, who knows how long we would have been fighting!
"Water!" Lime said just one word, but we all knew that such a expression from Lime was not typical for an ordinary difficulty level, so it could only mean that the danger level was extremely high.
Could it be?
Hearing the sound of water behind us growing louder, I suddenly understood why Lime was running so urgently; this place was about to be flooded! Oh no! We had been walking for so long, yet we hadn't seen any way up or down. If the water came, it would be a miracle if we didn't drown! What should we do? My mind raced to find a way to survive.
Listening to the commotion ahead, I realized that Divine Hand and the others were also coming, so I shouted without hesitation, "Run back quickly, this place is going to be flooded." Just as I said this, I suddenly thought that there actually was a way to escape!
Divine Hand and the others did not doubt the truth of what we said; they only showed a brief moment of confusion when they saw Lime.
"Is there a way out?" Black Bear asked anxiously.
"There is!" Seeing that no one answered Black Bear's question, I simply replied without elaborating further. Given the sounds coming from behind and the distance we needed to run, there was no time to waste!
However, it seemed we were about to return to where we started. After traveling such a long distance, I never expected we would have to go back today! Yes, the place we were heading to was where we had encountered Xianxian before. I remembered there were doors on all six sides; as long as we climbed into one of those doors before the flood submerged this area, we would be fine! I hoped we would make it in time; I really didn't want to drown!
Time was of the essence. Lime did not explain why the water was rushing in or where it was coming from or how much there was. Everyone was focused on escaping; no one was foolish enough to question him.
The sound of water grew louder, like thunder. I turned around and saw murky water surging towards us from behind. I took a deep breath and covered my mouth and nose. In just a blink of an eye, the icy murky water rushed towards us; the current was so strong that we were swept away with almost no ability to resist...
