Chapter 254: Finally Found You
"Feng Xiao Ge, there’s a group of people not far ahead." One of the scouts happened to encounter another small team from the Spirit Department, which prompted that statement.
"Do you know who they are?" I asked.
"I don't know." The person rubbed his chin, frowning as he said, "But they look like they might be starving." He added, "They seem quite disheveled."
Lime remained silent, but Xianxian asked me, "Should we go take a look?"
Seeing the spark in Xianxian's eyes, I quickly replied, "Yes, of course we should check it out. Whether they are people we know or strangers, uh, we should help them, right?" I smiled at Lime; this good quality was all learned from him.
Lime gently shook his head and said two words: "Let's go." Then he took the lead, following the scout ahead. Xianxian and I immediately followed.
After turning left and right, it took us nearly half an hour to reach the location. In the darkness, we saw a few figures scattered about—uncertain whether they were alive or The Dead. Their clothes were black, dirty, and torn, emanating a strong stench. Just as I took another step forward, I suddenly felt a chill on my neck. A hoarse and deep voice whispered in my ear like a sound from hell, sending shivers down my spine. "Don't move."
"Okay, I won't move." With a cold dagger pressed against my neck, even if told to move, I wouldn't dare to.
"I wonder how to address you, senior? We three are merely passing through and mean no harm. What are you doing here?" Clearly, Xianxian was also being threatened, which is why such polite words were spoken.
"Stop."
As soon as the words left Xianxian's mouth, a hoarse voice came from inside. It sounded somewhat familiar, but it was really too… difficult to identify at the moment. However, because of those two short words, the dagger at my neck shifted away.
A beam of light suddenly shone on my face. I raised my hand to shield my eyes and heard a somewhat flippant voice say, “Old Feng, do you know them?”
“Little Phoenix, what are you doing here?” A voice filled with authority and a hint of helplessness reached my ears. I was taken aback and looked up to see an exceptionally haggard and aged man walking toward me. His face was gaunt, his appearance worn, his clothes were tattered and dark, and his hair looked like a bird's nest, as if it hadn't been washed in days. Yet, the deep blackness of his eyes brought me joy, and I hurried toward him, excitedly saying, “Dad, I finally found you!”
“Alas, you…” Yes, this man was indeed my dad, not someone pretending to be him. However, the sparkle that once shone in his eyes was now replaced with deep fatigue and an indescribable complexity.
“So it’s Old Feng’s son! I thought who it was!” The man behind me relaxed upon hearing this and plopped down onto the ground, looking utterly exhausted.
“Oh, you must be hungry. We still have food here.” As they spoke, Xianxian and Lime had already taken out food and water from their backpacks. The man who had just sat down sprang up at the mention of food. “Food? Oh, and drinks? Ha ha, not bad at all! Old Feng, I tell you, your son is much more capable than you; look at him—he’s made it all the way here without a scratch on him and has so much food and drink. Not bad, not bad…”
Despite this praise, my dad's expression did not improve. I knew he was worried about my safety, but since I had come today, I hoped he would recognize my abilities. So I said, “Dad, I'm no longer that useless Feng Zi from before. Even if you kept things from me, I still know many things.”
“You know everything?” My dad didn’t seem overly surprised; however, his expression was serious and filled with deep exhaustion.
“Let’s eat while we talk!” Seeing my dad like this made me realize he must have missed many meals. Ignoring his expression, I pulled him to a corner of the wall and conjured up many better items than Compressed Biscuit, such as a box of rice with toppings. Although it was a bit cold, the taste hadn’t changed; after all, time inside The Dead seemed to stand still—there was no need to worry about food going bad or expiring.
“You…” My dad looked at me with a complex gaze. After uttering one word, he fell silent.
I did this to show him what I had in hand; so I nodded and said, “With this treasure here, you can feel more at ease about me now!”
“You kiddo really has good luck!” My dad shook his head and began to eat heartily.
Because my dad said that the four or five people around him are trustworthy, I didn't hide the existence of The Dead from them. After hearing this, they all expressed great surprise and shock, and one of them kept insisting not to eat the Compressed Biscuit, but to have the same food as my dad.
There was no way around it, so I had to give each of them a portion. Anyway, during my free time, I usually store food and water inside The Dead, so even giving them some was more than enough.
"Old Feng, why does this young man look so familiar to me?" The person who seemed more energetic after eating approached Lime, sizing him up while shoveling rice into his mouth.
"Xiao Zian, can you not embarrass yourself in front of others? Just behave and stop showing off," said someone sitting in the corner who looked to be about the same age as my dad.
"What? You think I'm embarrassing myself? And when did I show off?" Xiao Zian immediately got angry upon hearing this, shooting a fierce glare at that person. He then sized up Lime again and tentatively said, "You can't be Luo Yu, right? No way, I saw him over twenty years ago."
Just as I was about to explain, someone lazily said to me, "Don't mind that kid; he's just messing with you. He knows your identities."
"Hey, Bai Gu Fei! Can you not ruin my fun? It's not every day we get three lovely young people here."
I twitched my lips and decided it was better not to comment...
Having a lively character like Xiao Zian in the group meant we wouldn't be lonely. Plus, I liked their atmosphere; it was completely different from Divine Hand's group. Aside from Evil Bird's bad temper, everyone else seemed pretty much the same—boring!
This is much better; Xiao Zian's personality is quite similar to Xianxian's—they're both lively characters!
