"That must be the Bear-like Creature!"
"That living wild chicken couldn't have been caught by this skinny little girl!"
Under the discussions and laughter of the villagers from Zhoujiatun, Yezhi had no temper to speak of. However, being gossiped about by these outsiders made her unhappy. She shouted with a bit of an edge in her voice, "What are you looking at? Never seen a beauty before?"
The seven men and three women by the two carts were all taken aback. How thick-skinned did one have to be to say such a thing? A middle-aged man with a face full of stubble was so shocked he couldn't close his mouth, while a young woman with two braids sharply exclaimed, "Shameless!"
Yezhi's face turned from pale to red; in this era, her words were indeed shocking. Sigh! This is what happens when one gets used to being arrogant; it just slipped out.
"Miss, we are from Wujia Village, Wu Yi Village, and Wu Er Village. We weren't really looking at you; we were just curious about that little Bear-like Creature," an old farmer with a weathered face stepped forward to explain seriously.
Yezhi rolled her eyes; this old man was not a good person. The more he explained, the more embarrassed she felt. Indeed, experience counts.
"Ha ha! Old Zhao, it's you guys!" Village Uncle and Big Zhu approached from behind Yezhi, shaking hands warmly with the old farmer.
"Old Zhou, you busy man, you've finally come back!" The old man grinned widely and laughed heartily.
Yezhi walked over to Big Zhu and quietly asked, "Why are so many outsiders coming to our village?" Big Zhu whispered a few words in her ear, and she suddenly understood; these people had come specifically to keep an eye on the carrots and cabbages in their village's fields. Faced with this group that wanted to take away her village's harvest, Yezhi couldn't muster a welcoming smile. After greeting Village Uncle and Big Zhu, she quickly pulled Black Treasure along and left.
Back home, Aunt Zhou was cooking Vegetable Soup. She poked her head out of the kitchen and exclaimed in surprise, "Girl, you've gone up the mountain again!"
Yezhi nodded and handed the colorful long-tailed mountain chicken to Aunt Zhou for preparation. She also unloaded two heavy sacks and two much larger white geese from Black Treasure's back. The geese honked affectionately as they circled around Black Treasure.
Aunt Zhou, holding the mountain chicken, didn't move but softly said, "Girl, you've worked hard!"
Aunt Zhou understood that there were only 2 more pounds of cornmeal left at home. For the past few days, she and her daughter had been reluctant to eat it, relying solely on the vegetables from their garden for meals, while wild fruits filled Black Treasure's greedy belly. If they didn't go up the mountain, they really wouldn't know how to survive. Aunt Zhou looked at the frail Yezhi and felt a pang of heartache.
"Aunt, let's stew the chicken tonight!"
"Alright! Let's do it!" Aunt Zhou turned away, swallowing her sorrow. Yezhi was busy washing up by the well, completely unaware of Aunt Zhou's thoughts. If she had known, she wouldn't have played it low-key; she would have rushed to Cosmic Mall to buy forty or fifty pounds of food to put Aunt Zhou's mind at ease.
After enjoying a fragrant stew of mountain chicken and Hazel Mushroom, Yezhi sprawled on the rocking chair, savoring the taste. Aunt Zhou came out of the kitchen with a basket, her face beaming with a smile.
"Daughter, come! Take this to Teacher Xiao!"
Yezhi closed her eyes and groaned. She thought to herself that no matter how small the mountain chicken was, it still had two legs. After giving one to Aunt Zhou, all she got was a wing. She wondered why Aunt Zhou hadn't mentioned inviting Xiao Cheng over for dinner; it turned out Aunt Zhou had been planning this all along and was waiting for her.
"Aunt, whether I take it or you take it makes no difference. You go ahead; I'll stay home with Black Treasure!"
Aunt Zhou squinted at the eager Yezhi and gently said, "It's not the same thing. You both are educated people and young; it's good for you to interact more." Aunt Zhou's tone was firm, leaving Yezhi in tears as she reluctantly took the basket and headed out.
"Xiao Cheng! Xiao Cheng!"
Yezhi activated her night vision and quickly walked to Zhou San's yard. Xiao Cheng was correcting homework under the dim light when he heard her call and opened the gate.
"Oh, it's Comrade Yezhi! Please come in!"
Yezhi quickly waved her hand; she didn't dare enter. If they were seen alone together again, there would be no way to clear their names.
Yezhi's urgent response made Xiao Cheng's lips curl into a smile; "Comrade Yezhi, those who are innocent have nothing to fear from rumors!"
In life, one cannot avoid being influenced by others. At the height of their popularity, the two of them appropriately avoided unnecessary discussions, which Yezhi thought was reasonable. After stuffing the basket into Xiao Cheng's arms, Yezhi extended a finger and shook it lightly in front of Xiao Cheng, whispering, "I'm not afraid of gossip! I'm afraid of trouble! Actions speak louder than words; there's no need to waste breath." Xiao Cheng burst into hearty laughter while holding the bamboo basket. Yezhi chuckled awkwardly a couple of times before turning to leave.
"Comrade Yezhi, you shouldn't have come to deliver something!" Xiao Cheng called out to Yezhi's retreating figure.
Yezhi did not turn back, only letting a clear voice drift back, "That was sent by Aunt Zhou for you; it has nothing to do with me! Don't flatter yourself!" With a beaming smile, Xiao Cheng opened the lid of the bamboo basket, and the warm aroma of stewed mountain chicken with Hazel Mushroom wafted out...
For several days, Yezhi was either busy delivering wild fruits to friends like Bai Duoya, Xingli, and Dulisa, or going up the mountain with Black Treasure to gather wild fruits, collect Pine Nuts, gather Hazelnuts, and pick mushrooms... She even encountered Wolf Child in the dense forest, who was climbing a tree to pick Kiwi. Upon seeing Yezhi, Wolf Child clung tightly to the trunk and pretended to glare fiercely with wide eyes.
This show of bravado made Yezhi chuckle; she found the unclear expression on Wolf Child quite adorable. Meanwhile, Black Treasure, seeing a dark figure in the tree, happily climbed up closer to Wolf Child.
This dark creature was known to Wolf Child, who recognized it as a fierce opponent. She nervously let out a howl, and Yezhi thought quickly: this is bad. The Pet Communicator responded: danger, come quickly!
"Wolf Child, Black Treasure won't hurt anyone; we're together and mean no harm!" After explaining to Wolf Child, she called out to Black Treasure: "Black Treasure, come down!" Hearing Mama Bear's call, Black Treasure slowly descended from the tree, shaking its round head in protest; it hadn't even greeted anyone yet.
Confused, Wolf Child looked at the pair of human and bear below the tree. She touched the furry head of Black Treasure, keenly sensing the rustling sounds in the forest. Soon after, Leader Wolf and its pack appeared before Yezhi, surrounding her and Black Treasure.
Yezhi greeted the wolf pack amicably, but wolves are proud creatures and completely disregarded her friendliness. Seizing an opportunity, Leader Wolf lunged forward suddenly. Mistaking this for an invitation to hug, the foolish little bear approached eagerly and wrapped its arms around Leader Wolf. Startled by this unexpected display from Black Treasure, Yezhi felt a mix of surprise and delight as she watched Leader Wolf open its mouth wide to reveal sharp white teeth. Without hesitation, she punched Leader Wolf, exclaiming, "Don't you dare bite!"
The punch sent Leader Wolf tumbling onto the grass with a long howl that was so unpleasant it made Yezhi frown. "Hey, you could try a hundred times and still wouldn't beat me!" she said while waving her right hand clad in Shockwave Power Gloves, grinning proudly.
Jumping down from the tree, Wolf Child silently watched as the defeated wolf pack retreated into the dense forest. Sighing at how oblivious this little one was to danger, Yezhi thought: this kid actually wanted to dance with wolves.
