Xiao Cheng and Yezhi had a conversation about self-awareness awakening, which gave them both some opinions about each other.
Xiao Cheng, who was idealistic, became more guarded and withdrew from teaching the women's literacy class, even starting to audit the men's literacy class.
He felt an indescribable anger; he could not believe that someone as educated and cultured as Yezhi would say such things and foolishly try to hinder the progress of the people from Zhoujiatun.
He began to question things he previously thought were very reasonable coming from Yezhi, especially regarding the educational issues concerning Wolf Child, where they had always disagreed.
Thus, he told Wolf Child, "If you are human, you must live like one. Starting tomorrow, I will no longer treat you differently. You must attend full-day classes and complete your assignments just like One Egg and the others."
Wolf Child's days became less joyful. On the first day, she was punished for not sitting through the entire day, and on the second day, she was punished with twenty strikes for not completing her homework.
On the third day, Yezhi finally completed the training for Zhou Xiahe and Zhou Liutiao. Sister Luo brought out the uniforms that Yezhi had requested.
After looking at the floral shirt, Zhou Liutiao picked up the deep blue overalls and said with delight, "Is this really for me from Sister Ye?"
Before her, Zhou Xiahe had already put on the deep blue Zhongshan suit. "Does it look good on me, Sister Ye? Am I not particularly spirited and full of leadership style?"
Madwoman smiled while looking at this one and that one, exclaiming, "Young people look good in anything."
With a firm stance, Yezhi had Willow Stick change into new clothes as well. The new outfits made the men look more handsome and the women more charming.
"Welcome to the Zhoujiatun Specialty Store. How can I help you?" Pretending to be customers, Aunt Zhou and Sister Luo arrogantly ignored them. Willow Stick smiled at them both and said, "You two take your time. If you find something you like, just call me."
Zhou Xiahe was responsible for clapping his hands in front of the store to promote, saying, "Zhoujiatun is a great place with beautiful mountains and waters. The Bilo rice is highly nutritious, and the Oats produced here are fragrant. We have radishes, cabbages, golden needles, yellow mushrooms... I can't count them all or sing their praises enough."
Yezhi interjected, "Is it expensive?"
"As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Our products may be a bit pricey, but they are worth it. If you don't believe me, buy some and try it. If it's not good, you can return it."
"What if I cook the rice and find it bad? Can I return it then?"
Willow Stick and Xiaohe replied in unison, "Return!"
"Only if I return it to you, can you tell me what's wrong with it?" Willow Stick handed a piece of candy to Yezhi, who unwrapped it. Sucking on the sweet treat, she mumbled, "I just can't get used to such expensive rice; every bite makes my heart tremble."
After two days of simulated training, Xiaohe and Willow Stick exchanged glances; they had been worn down by the various customers Yezhi had portrayed.
"Sister, our Bilo rice is indeed quite expensive, but it's nourishing. Its nutritional value is several times that of ordinary rice!" Willow Stick raised her chin proudly, which made everyone laugh.
Willow Stick asked brightly, "Sister Ye, do you think I did well just now?"
Yezhi pretended to have a serious face as she circled around her. "Hmm. Not bad."
Zhou Xiahe grinned and said, "We finally got started!" In fact, when it came to business matters, Yezhi left them to figure things out on their own; her main focus was to temper their tempers. As the saying goes, "Harmony brings wealth," and being amiable was key. Besides, in the Provincial Capital, they were outsiders without roots; being friendly could only help.
"Xiaohe, Willow Stick, I have high hopes for you both! Keep it up!"
Zhou Xiahe and Zhou Liutiao seemed energized as they promised to do their best. Just as Yezhi wanted to encourage them further, Wolf Child rushed in like a gust of wind.
"Ah~! Ah~!" The Wolf Child screamed at her and the people in the house with red eyes.
Aunt Zhou wanted to pull her, but as soon as her hand touched the Wolf Child, she was scratched. Yezhi angrily said, "What’s going on? Just screaming without saying anything is useless, and you hurt someone? Are you itching for a fight?"
The Wolf Child and Yezhi stared at each other, while Aunt Zhou, who couldn't understand why the Wolf Child was angry, hurried to persuade her. The Madwoman felt that the Wolf Child must not be acting out for no reason, so she stood next to the Wolf Child.
"Mom!" Yezhi felt a pang of bitterness in her heart; she still had one child in her womb and couldn’t even get her mother-in-law to stand with her.
"What happened to the Wolf Child? Did she suffer some grievance?" Aunt Zhou's concerned tone made Yezhi wish she could give the Wolf Child a couple of shakes.
Everyone began to ask the Wolf Child all at once. The more they asked, the angrier the Wolf Child became. She threw her backpack on the ground and stomped on it, declaring that she would no longer study.
Yezhi knew very well that the Wolf Child's desire to learn human skills and dominate the forest like Big Wolf was strong. For this ideal, the Wolf Child had worked hard in her studies. What could possibly make her give up on that dream?
"Jiajia, Jiajia."
"Wolf Sister!"
One Egg, Xiao Fan, and Zhou Xiaomu finally caught up to the door. Soon after, Black Treasure came crashing in with Niu Niu. The two brothers often wandered around school during their free time; they didn’t know what they understood from listening but had become much more disciplined after being inundated with book sounds.
Yezhi put her hands on her hips and softened her voice towards the Wolf Child, saying, "Look how much everyone cares about you! What happened?"
The Wolf Child huffed and looked at One Egg. This boy had always been the Wolf Child's echo and was now acting as her spokesperson.
The situation wasn't complicated; it was just that Xiao Cheng's repeated discipline from the Yan Family made it hard for the Wolf Child to adapt, leading to a backlash. The worst part was that he hit the palm of her hand in front of the whole class. The girl was curious about many human things but also looked down on them; however, she cared about appearances. Her strong sense of pride had been there since she mingled with wolves because wolves are proud creatures after all.
"How can Teacher Xiao hit students?" Yezhi laughed at Aunt Zhou's gritted teeth expression. When she was a teacher, from the village chief to the parents, everyone would let her hit them if they misbehaved.
"Is it that you can't sit still, or is it that you haven't finished your homework?" Just a couple of days ago, Wolf Child got hit on the palm for this reason. She knew Wolf Child was affected by her, but getting hit on the palm didn't seem like a big deal to her. Wolf Child wasn't afraid of pain; it was just about face and pride.
"Jiajia, didn't I give you a Comic Book? If you read the Comic Book, you won't feel uncomfortable sitting up." Every time Yezhi heard One Egg call Jiajia during his voice change, she felt a chill run down her spine.
"One Egg, can you stop calling Wolf Child Jiajia?" Before Yezhi could finish her complaint, Madwoman pointed out that the focus wasn't on what One Egg called but rather that it was wrong to read Comic Books during class.
Yezhi, who was not in the right herself, readily agreed, "One Egg, it's fine if you misbehave yourself, but don't lead our Wolf Child astray."
One Egg raised his shiny round face and retorted, "Sister Ye, didn't you say you often did this when you were young?"
Yezhi felt frustrated; she shouldn't have talked about her past with One Egg and the others. "Can't this brat leave some face for his sister?"
One Egg stared with his big black-and-white eyes and said gruffly, "Why care about these superficial things? Besides, don't you always say that having thick skin allows you to eat from all sides?"
Willow Stick and Xiao He laughed heartily, and Yezhi felt like she was shooting herself in the foot. Wolf Child looked at Yezhi after hearing One Egg's words. "What's wrong with Jiajia getting hit on the palm by Teacher Xiao in front of everyone? We've all been hit before; just learn from Sister Ye to toughen up and it'll be over."
Zhou Xiaomu, who thrived on chaos, shouted to learn from Sister Ye.
Yezhi angrily punched her fist. "Good one, One Egg!" (To be continued)
