I watched their backs, a wave of bitterness suddenly rising in my heart. I knew that Duan Jiayu was just being kind and meant nothing else. Yet, I couldn't help but feel jealous of that girl, envious of how close she could be to Duan Jiayu.
"Sang Sang, what's wrong?"
Jiang Siyun walked over to her side, asking with concern.
"Nothing," I shook my head and forced a smile.
"Are you feeling unwell? You don't look too good," Jiang Siyun asked worriedly.
"I'm really fine; I might just be a bit dizzy from the sun," I made an excuse, not wanting to worry Jiang Siyun.
"Then you should rest for a while. I'll go check on them," Jiang Siyun said before heading in the direction where Duan Jiayu and the others had left.
Watching her figure disappear, I felt even more upset. Jiang Siyun came from a well-off family, her cheerful and generous personality made her a perfect match for Duan Jiayu.
And here I was, just an ordinary girl—what right did I have to compete with Jiang Siyun?
I shook my head and forced out a smile, "I'm fine; you all go ahead and eat. I want to walk alone for a bit."
With that, I turned and walked deeper into the mountain path, leaving Jiang Siyun and another girl exchanging glances.
The mountain path was flanked by dense woods, sunlight filtering through the gaps in the leaves and casting dappled shadows on the ground.
I walked aimlessly, my mind in disarray. I didn't know what to do—should I continue to secretly love Duan Jiayu or should I give up?
Before I knew it, I had reached the hillside.
Standing on the slope, I could overlook the entire valley; the view was breathtaking.
I took a deep breath, the fresh air calming me slightly.
I sat down next to a rock, hugging my knees and resting my chin on them, staring blankly into the distance.
"Why are you here alone?"
A familiar voice sounded behind me, causing my heart to tremble as I turned around abruptly.
Duan Jiayu stood behind me, a hint of concern on his face.
"I... I'm fine. I just wanted to come out for a walk," I stammered, standing up in a panic, my gaze darting away from him.
"You don't look well. Are you feeling unwell?" Duan Jiayu stepped closer, reaching out to check my forehead. "You don't have a fever, do you?"
"I'm really fine; I might just be a bit dizzy from the sun," I took a step back, avoiding his hand.
"Are you really okay?" Duan Jiayu looked at me with a hint of doubt in his eyes.
"Yes, I'm really fine," I nodded, forcing a smile.
Seeing my forced smile, Duan Jiayu felt a pang of sympathy. He knew that I must be upset about what had just happened.
"Sang Sang..." he called my name softly, his tone carrying an imperceptible tenderness.
I looked up at him in confusion.
"You..." Duan Jiayu gazed at me, hesitating to continue.
"What is it?" I felt a bit anxious under his stare.
Duan Jiayu took a deep breath, as if making a significant decision. He reached out and pulled me into his embrace, his voice low and firm. "I like you. Will you be my girlfriend?"
I was stunned, unable to believe my ears. The happiness came so suddenly that it caught me off guard.
"I... I..." I stammered, not knowing what to say.
"I know there's quite an age gap between us, but I really like you. I've liked you for a long time," Duan Jiayu held me tightly, as if trying to merge me into his very being.
His embrace was warm and wide, and my heart raced as if it were about to leap out of my chest.
"I... I like you too," I gathered my courage and said softly.
This sentence had been repeated in my mind countless times, and today, I finally had the chance to say it out loud.
Duan Jiayu smiled with relief upon hearing my response. He lowered his head and gently kissed my lips.
I closed my eyes and responded to his kiss.
In that moment, all my anxieties and worries vanished, leaving only a heart full of happiness and sweetness.
Hiding not far away behind the bushes, Jiang Siyun witnessed everything. Her face turned pale, and her lips trembled slightly.
It turned out he already had someone he liked in his heart.
Tears silently slid down Jiang Siyun's cheeks as she covered her mouth and turned to run down the hillside.
The setting sun painted the sky in shades of gold and red.
Duan Jiayu and I held hands, strolling along the mountain path. Our silhouettes were elongated by the sunset, as if we would never reach the end.
