“Yamato, as you go, may the mountains be high and the waters long, wishing you a smooth journey.”
At the entrance of Rong City Train Station, Zhang Jianlin handed the suitcase to Chuyang, patting him on the shoulder. He said, “Remember what I told you, think twice before doing anything in the future, and don’t let them down.”
In the end, Chuyang chose the Southwest Theater for no particular reason. Compared to the more active Southeast War Zone with its Deep Sea Shipgirls, the Southwest Theater had always seemed much calmer and safer, which became a prerequisite for Chuyang's choice of Naval Base.
As for the position of Rongcheng Garrison Commander promised by Wu Sheng, Chuyang had never considered it. Setting aside its feasibility, he simply wasn't interested in being a Garrison Commander.
Despite having spent three years at Rongcheng Naval Academy and carrying a military demeanor, Chuyang was essentially a laid-back person who disliked being constrained and didn’t want to impose restrictions on others.
The Garrison Commander position required coordinating relationships between various Naval Bases in peacetime and formulating strategies while managing Fleet Girls during wartime. Therefore, he had no desire to take on such troublesome responsibilities.
Regarding the benefits that came with this position, Chuyang was even less interested. He was not one of those Admirals who constantly thought about construction and needed vast resources.
This was unavoidable; based on Chuyang's speculation, he might have some unknown reasons that would prevent him from acquiring Fleet Girls through construction in the future. The supplies issued by Naval Headquarters could fully meet the needs of Fleet Girls for sorties at his Naval Base, so he really didn't have a significant demand for resources and felt no urgency. Thus, there was no need for him to take on the role of Garrison Commander and deal with trivial matters.
Given these two points, yesterday Chuyang declined Wu Sheng's repeated invitations without much thought and still chose Naval Base No. 197 at Southwest Coast.
Today was his departure day. After packing his luggage early in the morning, Zhang Jianlin drove them to the train station.
“Brother Zhang, I appreciate your kind words and all your care for me; I will remember it deeply.” As Chuyang spoke, he took the suitcase and patted Zhang Jianlin on the shoulder. “Let the past be past! We cannot chase after bygone days. Brother Zhang, will you continue like this in the future?”
Over the past year, Chuyang has received various forms of care from Zhang Jianlin, so as he was about to leave, he couldn't help but offer some advice.
"Yamato, don't try to persuade me. Brother Zhang will likely live his life this way, perhaps it will continue like this, or maybe I will go out and explore the world, appreciating the beautiful landscapes everywhere." Perhaps it was the moment of parting that prompted Zhang Jianlin, who usually spoke little, to open up.
"...If I were to meet someone, I might marry her and have a pair of children. At least that would leave a legacy for the Zhang family. After I pass away, I wouldn't have to face my ancestors with shame... But the world is ever-changing, and life is like a fleeting dream. Time passes in an instant; who can predict the future? ...Alright, you should hurry inside! The train is probably arriving soon. If you miss this one, you'll have to wait three more days. Farewell for now; we will meet again."
After speaking, Zhang Jianlin turned and strode towards the car parked by the roadside.
"Let's go! We should head inside too!" Chuyang sighed, grabbed his suitcase, and entered the train station with Lexington, Firefly, and Andrea Doria.
Whether Zhang Jianlin took his advice to heart was unknown to Chuyang, who didn't care to dwell on it. Everyone has their own fate; while it's true that one shouldn't force things, in many cases, actions lead to vastly different outcomes. Ultimately, it depends on oneself. No matter how much others advise or persuade, if the person doesn't take action, it will have no effect. So he chose not to think about those matters anymore. What he needed to do moving forward was just as Zhang Jianlin said: think carefully before acting, seek not for merit but avoid mistakes, and ensure that his Fleet Girls live happily and safely for a lifetime. That was all he could do as their Admiral.
This time, Chuyang and his group did not head directly to the Naval Base, but instead set their destination in the inland city of Tongcheng in central Asia, simply because Lexington's sister Saratoga was located in Shun'an County, which is under Tongcheng's jurisdiction.
Traveling by train from the southeastern coastal city of Rongcheng to Tongcheng would take seven or eight days, while flying would only take seven or eight hours. Logically speaking, they should have chosen the more convenient flight.
However, due to Chuyang's fear of flying—stemming from an incident during a business trip in his previous life when he encountered severe turbulence—he absolutely refused to fly if given a choice. Although that flight ended safely at its destination airport without any real danger, ever since then, he had avoided airplanes whenever possible.
Despite airplanes being touted as the safest mode of transportation with the lowest accident rates, when accidents do occur, they often lead to disaster. Being high in the air cannot compare to traveling on solid ground; being grounded feels much safer.
Moreover, it seemed that the Fleet Girls also disliked flying. Even Lexington, an Aircraft Carrier Ship Girl who enjoyed flying herself, showed no interest in taking human flights.
The most important factor was that technology in this world was significantly outdated. Even military aircraft were old-fashioned propeller planes; civilian airliners were even less reliable. Their performance gave Chuyang no confidence whatsoever, so taking the train felt like a better option.
"Honey, let me pull it!" With both hands focused on the plastic bags in her left hand, Lexington reached out with her right hand to grab the suitcase that Chuyang was dragging behind.
"No need, it's not heavy," Chuyang shook his head and lightly held Lexington's hand.
The large luggage had all been checked in with the logistics company after returning from the academy yesterday, allowing them to deliver it directly to the nearest small county to Naval Base. Therefore, aside from a few changes of clothes for the four of them and some toiletries, there was nothing else in the suitcase; it really wasn't heavy at all.
On the other hand, the two bags that Lexington was carrying, filled with food, drinks, and fruits prepared for the journey, looked quite heavy. However, Lexington stubbornly refused to let him help carry them. But thinking about it, even if it were a small car weighing two tons, it would be no different from a toy in the hands of Fleet Girls.
As they passed through the underground passage and boarded the train station platform with other travelers, Chuyang suddenly understood a principle while looking at the empty tracks.
"One cannot blame society for a hard life, nor can one blame the government for bad luck," so if the train is delayed, let it be delayed...
