Ye Xiaofei became anxious and shouted, "They took the car away, what are we going to do?"
"Let's have the kids hide for now! Who can worry about the car at this point?" Ye Cheng said, leaning on his wooden stick as he turned and walked into the Great Forest behind them.
The middle-aged man did not understand what these people were trying to do; as long as he could make money, that was all that mattered. With a loud shout, he drove the cattle across the river to find help.
Yingzi said to Fei Hu and Ye Xiaofei, "You two help out; they are almost catching up!" Saying this, she went down to the river, opened the trunks of two cars, and pulled out four or five backpacks, which appeared to be filled with food and drinking water.
Fei Hu understood Yingzi's intention, so he remained silent, bent down to carry one backpack on his back while holding another in his hand, striding towards Ye Cheng.
Ye Xiaofei struggled a bit with just one backpack and asked Yingzi as she walked, "Are we going to stay in the mountains?"
"Sis, talk less and conserve your energy; you'll understand everything soon," Yingzi replied. She carried a large backpack and held two smaller ones in her hands but seemed to walk effortlessly as if she had trained for this.
Fei Hu caught up with Ye Cheng and then looked ahead. Wow! What a huge mountain! There were two mountains on either side, with an almost abandoned road in between. The trees were lush and green; it didn't look like a small forest at all.
"Old man, we can't take the road; we should head up the mountain quickly. I estimate they will definitely come after us by car this time," Fei Hu reminded Ye Cheng, who was deep in thought.
"Oh! The young man is right; we should head into the mountains immediately," Ye Cheng replied with a slight smile at Fei Hu before turning to climb the large mountain on the left.
When it came to climbing mountains, this was Fei Hu's strong suit. He had lived in the Great Forest since childhood, where climbing mountains was part of his daily routine. Fei Hu quickly took two steps ahead and reached Ye Cheng first, smiling as he said, "Follow me," extending a hand.
Ye Cheng hesitated for a moment, feeling a bit embarrassed seeing that Fei Hu was carrying a large backpack while also holding another one. However, he still reached out his hand. Fei Hu grabbed Ye Cheng's hand and began climbing up the mountain.
Ye Cheng did not expect this mysterious young man to be so strong; even while carrying weight, he could pull him along as if walking on flat ground. When Ye Cheng was panting heavily from exhaustion, Fei Hu smiled and said, "You sit here and rest for a bit; I'll go get those two."
Ye Cheng sat down on the fallen leaves under a tree and looked down. To his surprise, despite his age, he had been pulled by this young man all the way up to halfway up the mountain, leaving Yingzi and Xiaofei about fifty or sixty meters behind.
At that moment, voices came from below the mountain, with someone shouting, "They are right above! Everyone, hurry up!"
Fei Hu's expression changed slightly upon hearing this. He quickly set down his backpack and dashed out, running wildly down the mountain. Ye Cheng, sitting on the ground, widened his eyes in shock as he watched Fei Hu use the trees for leverage, bouncing left and right. With a rustling sound, he seemed to float down the mountain. What was this young man doing? His skills were comparable to those of ancient heroes. Ye Cheng felt as if he were dreaming and could hardly believe it.
When Fei Hu reached Ye Xiaofei's side, he didn't say a word. He snatched her backpack and grabbed her delicate hand, pulling her upward with great force. Ye Xiaofei exclaimed while climbing, "Slow down! I'm almost exhausted!"
"Would you rather be exhausted or beaten?" Fei Hu asked as he continued to climb.
Ye Xiaofei stumbled but got back up, panting heavily as she replied, "Of course I'd rather be exhausted than beaten by them!"
"Then hurry up! They are right behind you!" Fei Hu said, exerting more strength in his grip.
Ye Xiaofei was a bit frightened and used both hands and feet to follow Fei Hu up the mountain. Behind them, Yingzi saw this proud young lady being teased by Fei Hu and couldn't help but laugh.
"Everyone hurry! Don't let them get away!" The voice from behind grew closer.
By the time Fei Hu pulled Ye Xiaofei to Ye Cheng's side, Yingzi had also arrived. About thirty to forty meters behind them, more than ten men wielding machetes were climbing up.
However, when Ye Xiaofei sat next to Ye Cheng, she was out of breath and had several leaves stuck to her sweaty face, looking both disheveled and pitiful. As she watched the pursuers getting closer, Yingzi suddenly suggested to Fei Hu, "Why don't we drop some of our supplies? You carry Sister Xiaofei while I help Grandpa; that might speed things up."
"No way! Dropping food is like seeking death; they will still catch up with us. We must make them feel afraid," Fei Hu replied decisively, his eyes darting around the hillside behind Ye Cheng.
Suddenly, Fei Hu stepped forward and moved Ye Cheng aside. He forcefully wedged a wooden stick into several crevices between the rocks on the slope. After shaking it left and right and then lifting it up with a loud crash, several stones tumbled out. Fei Hu's face lit up as he picked up a rock and rolled it toward the approaching men. With screams echoing around them, those men were so startled that they froze on the slope; one even accidentally fell headfirst and rolled down.
Fei Hu's tactic was effective; he waited for them to tire out. Seeing this, Yingzi hurriedly followed suit and rolled some stones down as well. As long as those men made any move, they would roll stones down at them. They maintained a standoff for quite some time without any of the pursuers advancing.
Just when everyone felt slightly relieved, more than ten men in black masks climbed up from below. Their movements were noticeably quicker now; it was clear they had received professional training.
Ye Cheng's expression changed slightly upon seeing this. He sighed and said, "Kids, we can't hold back any longer; otherwise we won't be able to escape this forest. It seems they really intend to take action against us."
Fei Hu was a bit confused; he truly did not wish for any loss of life. That was why he had thrown stones earlier, aiming them towards areas where there were no people, intending to scare them off and prevent them from charging up.
Yingzi noticed Fei Hu's puzzled expression and softly said to him, "They are all masked, which means they are assassins, unlike those yellow-haired ones before. We cannot show mercy; otherwise, we will only end up dead."
Upon hearing this, Fei Hu froze. He had never considered killing someone; what should he do? It was either his death or theirs. Just as Fei Hu was lost in thought, the masked figures in black began to climb up quickly, closing the distance to over twenty meters in the blink of an eye. Yingzi shouted and rolled all the stones at her feet down the slope; it would be strange if they didn't injure a few.
Unexpectedly, these black-clad individuals were well-trained. Some ducked behind trees while others leaped directly onto the branches. Not a single one of Yingzi's stones hit its target, and she began to feel anxious as the masked figures continued their ascent. Seeing Yingzi's worried expression, Fei Hu gritted his teeth, picked up a slightly larger stone, and rolled it down. As the black-clad figures dodged left and right and some climbed the trees, Fei Hu quickly grabbed a fist-sized rock and hurled it at one of the climbers.
It was difficult for someone perched in a tree to evade; a scream pierced the air as one of the masked men fell from the branches and tumbled down the slope. Seeing this, several of his companions immediately dropped to the ground and ceased moving.
Fei Hu glanced at Ye Xiaofei, who was regaining her composure, and softly said, "Quickly help the elderly man climb to the top of the mountain; we can't stay here long. Yingzi should come with you; I will hold them off for now."
Ye Xiaofei stood up, puzzled, and asked, "Isn't this place safe?"
"Safe? If they come from both sides, won't we be surrounded?" Fei Hu replied coldly to Ye Xiaofei, not wanting her to recognize him.
Yingzi nodded, shouldered all their bags, and led Ye Xiaofei and Ye Cheng towards the mountain top.
As darkness slowly descended, Fei Hu knew that if they did not create some distance from these assailants now, they would face a difficult night ahead. With this thought in mind, Fei Hu suddenly crouched down. When the black-clad figures realized there was no one above them, they assumed their pursuers had fled. A few bold ones stood up and began to climb slowly upwards. Seizing this opportunity, Fei Hu launched stones like cannonballs; one individual failed to dodge in time and fell with a thud before rolling down the slope.
Amidst the chaos, Fei Hu continued to hurl stones; several more individuals were either struck on their arms or injured in their legs, resulting in a series of horrifying screams that echoed through the night.
