Everyone has no grudges or enmities, and Fei Hu did not want to use lethal force. Moreover, he came here this time for Yingzi, but when he found out that Ye Xiaofei was also present, it was no longer just for one person, but for two. He felt he had to do even more for Ye Xiaofei.
The light in the forest grew dimmer. Suddenly, a whistle echoed through the valley, and the men in black hurriedly slid down the slope. In an instant, they vanished without a trace.
Fei Hu then turned around and swiftly moved through the forest. As he reached the top of the mountain, he saw Ye Xiaofei and Ye Cheng huddled together. Yingzi was alertly scanning their surroundings. Upon seeing Fei Hu, she urgently asked, "What’s the situation? Did they catch up?"
Fei Hu smiled slightly and said, "For now, it's fine. I injured a few of them, and they all retreated."
Ye Cheng's eyes brightened at this news, and he asked with a smile, "Young Man, what exactly do you do? How do you have such impressive skills? Especially in this forest, you move like a tiger with wings."
This old man certainly knew how to use metaphors; after all, his name was Fei Hu. Fei Hu chuckled but remained silent. Yingzi thought for a moment and then said to Ye Cheng, "Grandpa, actually he is..."
"Alright, it’s getting dark soon. We need to find a place to stay for the night; we can't stay out here," Fei Hu interrupted Yingzi before she could continue.
Yingzi shook her head helplessly and smiled at Fei Hu, saying, "This matter is up to you. Whether the three of us can sleep well tonight depends on you."
Fei Hu glanced at Ye Xiaofei and saw her looking cold and tired. His heart ached for her. He wanted to take off his coat and drape it over her but held back for everyone's sake. Gritting his teeth, he dashed a few steps toward a low-lying area at the mountain's peak. Fortunately, it turned out to be a stone cave with many protruding rocks; it could easily accommodate more than ten people sleeping inside. The ground was covered with thick dry grass. After careful inspection by Fei Hu, all the traces left on the ground indicated that this place had been used by hunters.
When Fei Hu brought everyone up and settled them down, the moon had already risen above the treetops. The forest was quiet except for a few rare insects chirping; one could even hear the distant sound of flowing water. Those used to city life could hardly endure such silence, but Fei Hu felt different; it was as if he had just returned home—everything felt so familiar and natural. As soon as he entered the cave, a smile spread across his face.
Ye Cheng and Ye Xiaofei seemed exhausted; the grandfather and granddaughter leaned against each other without saying a word as if they were already asleep. Yingzi was quite energetic; she busily rummaged through her bag to find everyone's coats and draped them over Ye Cheng and Ye Xiaofei. Then she pulled out a large amount of food and took out a flashlight from her bag, asking Fei Hu, "Is this safe to use?"
Fei Hu looked at it in surprise and asked, "How did you think of everything so thoroughly? It seems you've been well-prepared for entering the mountains."
"This is not just a habit developed in the military. Every time we have field training, these are essential items. If you miss one, you might suffer. I heard that this place is deep in the mountains, so I prepared in advance just in case. I didn't expect it to come in handy," Yingzi said as she handed the flashlight to Fei Hu. This woman was truly sharp; no wonder she came from special military training.
In the depths of the mountains, shining a light would undoubtedly expose their location. Fei Hu understood this principle, so he carefully turned on the flashlight, directing the beam to the ground. Then he found a higher spot inside the cave and placed the flashlight there. This method worked well, and soon the cave was illuminated. Ye Xiaofei stretched a bit and quietly said to Yingzi, "Yingzi, I'm hungry. Is there anything to eat?"
"There is, but it's mostly snacks and some frozen food meant for gifts. It seems we won't be using them now, but there's no way to heat them up," Yingzi replied with a hint of helplessness.
Ye Cheng slowly stood up, glanced at the terrain around them, and smiled as he asked Fei Hu, "This area is quite recessed; if we start a fire, they shouldn't be able to see us, right? Everyone's tired after a day of work. If we don't replenish our food now, we'll be in trouble tomorrow."
Fei Hu remained silent as he stepped out of the cave to survey the surroundings before returning inside and telling Ye Cheng, "Although this place is a bit low and they won't see us if we start a fire, there will definitely be smoke. Let's wait a little longer; as night falls, moisture will rise in the mountains, and smoke will look just like that moisture. For now, let's gather some wood for the fire."
Upon hearing this, Ye Cheng nodded approvingly. He was increasingly impressed by this young man; how did he know so much? Even living in the deep mountains seemed second nature to him. The old man was filled with curiosity.
For Fei Hu, finding dry wood in the forest was an easy task. In no time at all, he returned with an armful of firewood. Noticing his damp clothes, Yingzi asked with concern, "Did you get wet from the dew? Can we start a fire now?" Fei Hu nodded, and soon bright flames began to rise.
Watching the cooked beef hanging from a branch and steaming, Ye Xiaofei swallowed hard; she was really hungry. This kind of anxiety was something she had never experienced before in her life. Fei Hu handed her some of the roasted meat without hesitation. At that moment, Ye Xiaofei couldn't hold back her nobility; she took it eagerly and began eating as if it were the best food in the world.
Seeing her struggle a bit while eating, Fei Hu opened a bottle of water and handed it over. Only then did Ye Xiaofei gratefully nod at him and say, "Thank you." My God, she finally said thank you! It seemed sincere; Fei Hu felt extremely happy as a smile broke through his mask, which Yingzi noticed.
When the second skewer was ready, Fei Hu remembered that an elderly man was sitting next to him; his earlier actions felt somewhat inappropriate. Embarrassed, he quickly handed the second skewer of beef to Ye Cheng. Ye Cheng accepted it and looked curiously at Fei Hu before softly asking, "Young man, have we met before?"
Fei Hu also handed Ye Cheng a bottle of mineral water and glanced back at him. He thought that aside from looking very much like his grandfather, there didn't seem to be any other connection—just a fleeting glance one night. Fei Hu couldn't help but shake his head.
"That's not right; you must have forgotten where we met before. The more I look at you, the more familiar you seem," Ye Cheng insisted as he stared intently at Fei Hu while trying hard to recall something from his memory—a difficult task for someone of his age.
"Don't think about it too much, Grandpa; whether we've met or not doesn't matter now. Just sit beside me and eat! You must be exhausted today; finish eating and rest early. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?" Ye Xiaofei finished her bottle of water in one go and casually tossed it aside.
Fei Hu looked at him and hurriedly said, "No, you need to keep your bottle. You might need it for drinking spring water. Besides, we can't leave any traces here when we leave; otherwise, they will follow us." Fei Hu had a serious expression.
"Oh, then I'll just pick it up," Ye Xiaofei said obediently, which surprised Yingzi and Ye Cheng.
After Ye Cheng and Ye Xiaofei finished eating, it was Yingzi and Fei Hu's turn. Ye Xiaofei, feeling full, smiled and said, "I've never had such a good appetite as today. Come on, let me roast it for you; I can just sit and eat."
"No way, let me do it! With all this smoke and fire, how can you handle it as a big CEO?" As soon as the words left his mouth, Fei Hu realized he had misspoken.
Sure enough, Ye Xiaofei squatted next to him, looked at Fei Hu, and asked, "What? Do you know me? Who are you really? Wearing an eye patch and acting all mysterious."
"No, I don't know you at all; Yingzi told me about you," Fei Hu blurted out in a panic. However, the lie was somewhat convincing.
Ye Xiaofei looked at Yingzi in disbelief. Yingzi was momentarily stunned and hurriedly made a couple of sounds to cover up the situation.
As they roasted wildfires and cooked food, it felt quite primitive. For a young lady who had lived abroad, this was both unfamiliar and intriguing. She squatted by the fire, blowing gently to make the flames burn brighter while continuously adding more fuel. She even roasted the already cooked beef again, giving it a smoky flavor that Fei Hu enjoyed immensely.
Yingzi quietly asked the silent Ye Cheng, "Grandpa, what should we do next? We've gone off track again, and there's someone blocking the way ahead while the Great Forest is behind us. It seems we have no choice but to fight."
Ye Cheng shook his head and said, "Fight? None of us will escape. We'll quickly fall into their hands. I don’t mind being captured; it's just a pity for you three young ones. It looks like they won’t leave any survivors. How about this: you three leave early tomorrow morning! I'll stay behind; their target is me."
Hearing this while tending to the fire, Ye Xiaofei immediately stood up with a tearful voice and said, "No way! If we leave, we leave together. If someone has to stay behind, I’ll stay with Grandpa." The scene was incredibly touching.
