Fei Hu figured out their motives and quietly climbed down from the tree, retracing his steps. As he neared the mountain top, he almost lost his way, but fortunately, he had lived in the Great Forest before and knew how to navigate through the woods.
When he returned to the cave, Ye Cheng and Ye Xiaofei were awake, whispering with Yingzi. The fire nearby was almost extinguished, and the midnight mountain wind chilled them, causing involuntary shivers.
Hearing the noise, Yingzi immediately asked, "Is that Fei Hu back?"
"It's me. Why aren't you sleeping?" Fei Hu rushed over to add some wood to the fire and blew on it until it flared up again.
Ye Cheng wrapped in a blanket came over and sat by the fire. He sighed in relief and said, "We couldn't sleep without you back. What’s the situation? Did you find anything?"
Fei Hu nodded and recounted everything that had happened, especially the conversation with Curly. He was very detailed in his account. At the end, he wanted to ask about the old man—who Ye Cheng was—but swallowed the question. However, Fei Hu had a rough idea; judging by Curly's tone, Ye Cheng was among them. He recognized Ye Xiaofei, and there was no need to mention Yingzi. The only one left was this old man, who perfectly matched the identity from before. Thinking of this made Fei Hu glance at Ye Cheng a couple more times.
Ye Xiaofei squeezed over and sat beside Fei Hu, saying, "Are you from the Special Police? I feel like you're a legendary figure; you're so mysterious. Since no one can sleep anyway, why don't you tell us more!"
"Hey, just because you're awake doesn't mean we want to be! How about you take watch while we two catch a bit more sleep?" Yingzi interrupted Ye Xiaofei's curiosity; she was actually trying to help Fei Hu out.
Ye Xiaofei pouted and said, "Fine," sounding quite helpless, which almost made Fei Hu laugh.
Ye Cheng cleared his throat lightly and added, "You all should sleep! I'll keep watch."
"No one needs to keep watch; just go to sleep quickly. At dawn, we'll head to the back mountain without needing them to rush us. The most important thing right now is to conserve our energy; otherwise, tomorrow could be another exhausting day," Fei Hu said as he stood up, dividing the fire into two piles and adding more wood. The cave instantly became much warmer.
Fei Hu gestured to Yingzi, and they both settled down at opposite ends of the cave, placing Ye Xiaofei and Ye Cheng in the middle. Although he knew there wasn't much danger at present, it was better to be cautious.
As soon as Fei Hu lay down, exhaustion hit him hard. He couldn't care less about the cold or the hardness of the ground; suddenly he thought of that broken bed in the Rental, which felt much more comfortable.
A chorus of birdsong pulled Fei Hu back from his dreams. He opened his eyes to see light breaking in from the east; dawn was approaching. Looking around the cave, he saw Ye Xiaofei curled up tightly with her head resting against Ye Cheng's back, sleeping soundly. Meanwhile, Yingzi had her arms crossed over her shoulders, leaning against the wall of the cave; it seemed she had remained highly alert and hadn’t slept much throughout the night.
As Fei Hu was tidying up the things on the ground, everyone woke up. Ye Xiaofei shrugged her shoulders and called softly, "Yingzi, come here for a moment, we..."
Fei Hu understood Ye Xiaofei's meaning and quickly said to Yingzi, "You all go ahead, we'll set off as soon as you return." Yingzi rubbed her eyes, stood up, took Ye Xiaofei by the hand, and walked into the woods.
When they returned, Fei Hu had already restored the stone cave to its original state. Since some of the items in their bags had been consumed, carrying them became much easier. Fei Hu led the way while Yingzi brought up the rear. The group climbed towards a mountain in the morning light.
The further they went back, the denser the trees became, which naturally slowed their progress. Eventually, Fei Hu could no longer bear it; he handed his backpack to Yingzi, bent down without hesitation, and carried Ye Cheng on his back. This significantly increased their speed. Although Ye Xiaofei tried her best to keep up, she still couldn't match their pace and remained behind Fei Hu.
When they reached the top of another peak, Fei Hu was exhausted. Ye Xiaofei took the opportunity to lie down in the grass, gasping for breath. Even Yingzi, with her strong physique, was drenched in sweat.
Since he was being carried, Ye Cheng quickly pulled out a few bottles of water from Yingzi's backpack and distributed them to everyone. After taking a couple of sips, Fei Hu loudly said, "Everyone drink just a little to quench your thirst; we need to save water for later."
Ye Xiaofei initially wanted to finish an entire bottle of water at once, but upon hearing Fei Hu's words, she hurriedly saved half of it. As for Yingzi, despite sweating a lot, she only took two small sips before capping her bottle.
After resting for a bit and regulating her breathing, Ye Xiaofei turned around and asked Fei Hu, "Are we safe for now? With so many mountains around, how would they know we're on this one?"
Fei Hu glanced at the somewhat disheveled Ye Xiaofei and couldn't help but laugh. "You're right; we are temporarily safe. Even if they can find us, it will take some effort. Next, we just need to find a good place to rest; we shouldn't have to run anymore today." He looked at Ye Xiaofei, whose once beautiful face was now smeared with dirt and sweat like a clown's face, and chuckled as he lowered his head.
Realizing that Fei Hu was laughing at her, Ye Xiaofei furrowed her brow and touched her delicate hand on the ground before walking over and suddenly smearing her hand on Fei Hu's face while laughing, saying, "That's what you get for laughing at me!" Fei Hu hurriedly dodged away, fearing that Ye Xiaofei would knock off his eye mask.
As the two playfully tussled, the tense atmosphere gradually eased. Ye Hu smiled and said, "Kids, it's time to find a place where you can eat something and rest well."
This resonated with everyone’s thoughts. A few people stood up and looked around, but all they saw were towering trees as far as the eye could see and messy weeds and fallen leaves on the ground. No one knew where they could find a safe place like the stone cave from last night.
Yingzi smiled and said, "Looks like we'll have to trouble you again; why don't you go look for it?"
Fei Hu chuckled, picked up a stick from the ground for support, and started walking. After taking just a couple of steps, he suddenly turned around and told Yingzi, "Keep an eye out down below; if they sneak up on us, it won't be easy to deal with."
Yingzi nodded with a smile. She didn't know when it started, but Fei Hu had taken charge, treating these people as his own family. Yingzi felt happy about this; in the face of a major incident, it was essential to have a man step up.
Fei Hu walked around the mountaintop but couldn't find a place to rest. What should he do? It was impossible to sleep outside! Suddenly, he noticed a small mountain next to this one and wondered if there might be a cave or a water source on that mountain.
Fei Hu quickened his pace and headed toward the small mountain. The area was overgrown with grass and trees, making it difficult to navigate. After much effort, he finally reached the top of the small mountain. However, he regretted it almost immediately. He thought about turning back but decided that since he was already there, he might as well take a look around.
As he approached the edge of the mountain, he saw a larger mountain nearby, its back appearing as if it had been sliced by a knife, revealing red rocks. Suddenly, Fei Hu's eyes lit up; on the back of this mountain were three closely spaced caves. He hurriedly dashed over to the caves and peered inside. To his surprise, they were naturally formed caves that were not only spacious but also had flat floors that looked like they had been artificially smoothed out. When he looked into one of the other caves, he exclaimed in amazement—there was even a spring with crystal-clear water at the bottom. It was truly an excellent place to rest.
Fei Hu quickly ran back and found Yingzi asleep against a large tree. Although Ye Xiaofei wasn't sleeping, he was praying inside the cave. Only Ye Cheng sat there in a daze.
As soon as Fei Hu approached, he excitedly shouted, "Wake up! Let's move over there!"
Ye Xiaofei hurriedly stood up and asked eagerly, "Did you find a place?"
"Yes! It's really nice, and there's even a spring nearby. It's like heaven is helping us!" Fei Hu said joyfully.
Yingzi stood up with a beaming expression, shouldered her backpack, and called out to Ye Cheng, "Let's go, Grandpa! We have a new home!"
Everyone laughed happily and followed Fei Hu toward the caves.
Meanwhile, on another mountain, Curly was leading his more than ten subordinates in a search operation.
