He brought back a batch of food and some daily necessities. A faint smile appeared on Ye Cheng's face, while Ye Xiaofei was so happy that she jumped around, because among the food was her favorite beef jerky.
Yingzi found a pair of pants from the bag and ran into the woods. After a while, she came back looking flustered and gently tugged at Fei Hu, whispering, "Something seems off here; there's movement in the forest."
Upon hearing this, Fei Hu frowned, picked up a machete from the ground, and didn't forget to hang the binoculars around his neck. Ye Xiaofei ran over with excitement and said with a smile, "Are we going hunting? You promised to take me; you can't back out now!"
"You stay here and watch your grandfather. Yingzi and I will go out for a bit and be back soon. Remember, don't leave the cave," Fei Hu said, nodding at Ye Xiaofei before signaling to Yingzi. The two of them then slipped into the woods.
Fei Hu moved quietly, frequently scanning ahead with the binoculars. Yingzi pointed to a large tree ahead and said softly, "I was changing clothes under that big tree just now. As soon as I took off my pants, I heard rustling behind me and felt someone was coming, so I didn't change my clothes and ran back because I had nothing in my hands." She seemed a bit shaken, still holding a pair of pants but nothing else.
Fei Hu gently patted Yingzi's back and said, "It's okay; I'm here. It seems like there's no one around. How about this? I'll climb the tree to keep watch while you quickly change your clothes!" Yingzi nodded gratefully.
In just a few moments, Fei Hu climbed up a large tree and stood on a branch, scanning the forest with his binoculars. Yingzi hurriedly changed her clothes under the tree and whispered, "I'm done; you can come down now!"
Suddenly, Fei Hu put his hand over his mouth and shushed Yingzi below him; he seemed to have noticed something. Yingzi's heart raced as she picked up a stick from the ground, broke it in half, and waved it in her hand.
Through the binoculars, he saw a dark figure moving under a large tree. After observing for a while, he realized it was a wild boar. Fei Hu couldn't help but feel delighted; it seemed they would have roasted meat tonight.
Seeing that Fei Hu was focused on something, Yingzi quietly moved in the direction he was looking. Soon enough, she heard the same rustling sound as before. Gripping the stick tightly in her hands, she cautiously stepped forward, thinking to herself that if someone was peeking at her while she changed clothes, they would be in for it.
While Fei Hu was watching from the tree, he wondered how to catch this creature when suddenly Yingzi's figure appeared in his binoculars, startling him. Despite its small size, if provoked, a wild boar could be very fierce due to its sharp teeth.
However, Fei Hu was at least thirty meters away from the wild boar. Realizing that approaching from the ground would be too late, he leaped from one tree to another. Even then, it was still slightly late. The wild boar suddenly sensed movement behind it; it turned around sharply to find a person holding a stick behind it. With nowhere to escape as it was backed against a broken wall, it could only flee.
Yingzi also didn't expect that the noise had come from a wild boar. She had seen one on television before; it wasn't much different from what she imagined—aside from its long teeth, its body was smaller than that of a domestic pig; it looked more like a piglet.
The wild boar was suddenly disturbed and looked at Yingzi with a hint of fear. However, instead of running away, it dared to confront her, which ignited her competitive spirit. Holding a wooden stick, she lunged forward as if to strike the boar, intending to scare it off. But the boar had other ideas; it let out a loud cry and dashed forward with incredible speed.
Yingzi did not expect the boar to attack her. Fortunately, she was agile; as she swung the stick, she leaped to the side. However, it was too late. The stick made a loud crack as it broke against the boar's body, but she felt a sharp pain at the hem of her pants. Looking down, she saw that her newly changed pants had been torn, and blood was oozing from the wound.
The boar had already charged ten meters away, making Yingzi stomp her foot in frustration. She felt unlucky; even this beast was bullying her, and now both pairs of her pants were ruined.
Fei Hu had just jumped down from a tree when he saw the wild boar rushing towards him at high speed. However, the beast did not anticipate that someone was lying in wait along its path. It charged ahead without looking to the sides. In that instant, Fei Hu leaped out from the side, swiftly bringing his knife down onto the boar's neck. The creature managed to run a couple of steps before collapsing—truly a close call.
Fei Hu wiped the blood off his knife in the grass before walking over to Yingzi. Seeing her face filled with anger, he joked, "That guy was just peeking at you changing clothes. I took care of it for you to vent your anger and satisfy everyone's appetite."
"It ran away, didn't it?" Yingzi couldn't help but chuckle at Fei Hu's words.
Fei Hu pointed at the bushes and laughed, "Run? If it ran away, where would I find meat? It's already lying right there."
Upon hearing this, Yingzi forgot about the pain in her leg and rushed over to find the motionless wild boar. She kicked it hard twice and exclaimed in surprise, "I can't believe it! I didn't see anything and yet this guy is dead!"
Fei Hu teased, "Didn't you say I'm a mountain god? So when I command it to die, it has no choice but to obey—it's that simple."
The two laughed as they used a wooden stick to carry the wild boar back. Ye Cheng found it hilarious while Yingzi recounted how Fei Hu had skillfully taken down the boar. Ye Xiaofei was both surprised and delighted, looking at Fei Hu as if he were not human but a deity.
The cave was suddenly filled with joy instead of its usual gloominess; it felt like a celebration was underway. Everyone was extremely happy as if all their troubles had vanished.
Fei Hu rolled up his sleeves and got to work. He called Yingzi and Ye Xiaofei to start a fire while he chopped some wooden sticks to build a frame for hanging the wild boar. With Ye Cheng's help, they hung up the boar. Using Yingzi's small military knife, they began skinning it—a task that Fei Hu excelled at. In no time at all, the boar was completely skinned, revealing its fresh red meat.
Just as Fei Hu was about to gut it, Ye Cheng couldn't hold back any longer. He rolled up his sleeves and said with a smile, "Let me do this, young man; I can handle it too. You just watch." Fei Hu nodded in agreement.
This is no exaggeration; Ye Cheng skillfully and swiftly handled the wild boar, expertly opening it up and removing its entrails in one go. In just a short while, the prepared wild boar was hanging nearby.
"Yingzi, take a look! It seems we have some salt among the things we brought today. Can you help me get it?" Fei Hu exclaimed happily.
As the sun began to set, the forest fell silent. Fei Hu picked up binoculars and looked towards the mountain across from them for a moment, then smiled at Yingzi and said, "I estimate that group has already come down."
Yingzi held a bag of salt along with a few other seasonings and placed them in front of Fei Hu, saying, "I think so too. They need to eat, but everything was burned by us. Tonight should be the safest night; tomorrow could be troublesome as they might retaliate fiercely."
Fei Hu sprinkled salt over the wild boar and pondered for a moment before saying, "That is a possibility, but I don't think it will happen so quickly."
"Why? Please tell us so we can have an idea," Yingzi looked at Fei Hu earnestly.
Fei Hu sighed and said, "You heard their conversation today. They suffered such a blow all of a sudden. Although there were no casualties, it cut off their retreat. So logically speaking, they wouldn't dare to act rashly within a day or two. It's very likely they will wait until their so-called equipment is ready and gather a large number of people to conduct a thorough search of this area. That's my personal opinion."
Ye Cheng thought for a moment and nodded. He smiled and said, "Your reasoning is very sound; this is playing by the rules. However, there are those who do not play by the rules, and everyone needs to keep that in mind. Therefore, danger lurks everywhere for us. We will ambush them, but they will also do the same; we must be on guard against that."
Ye Cheng's thoughts were somewhat conservative, but Fei Hu felt there was some truth to it; however, the likelihood of that happening was not very high. After all, the other party didn't even know where they were staying—how could they ambush? But humility is not a bad thing; Fei Hu still nodded seriously.
With the crackling sounds of fire, the aroma of roasted pork wafted through the air. Sitting by the fire, Fei Hu first cut off a piece with a small knife and respectfully handed it to Ye Cheng. Fei Hu's politeness touched the elder deeply.
In such an environment, gathered around the fire eating roasted meat, everyone felt an indescribable sensation inside. Although Fei Hu appeared calm on the outside, his heart was not at peace because tomorrow would bring unknown dangers for them once again.
