Just as Fei Hu was sleeping soundly, someone suddenly pinched his nose. Fei Hu jolted awake and saw Li Si Niu sitting by his bed, shouting loudly, "This is the dormitory! How can anyone sleep with you snoring like that?"
Fei Hu felt a bit annoyed. He wasn't deaf; did Li Si Niu really need to be so loud? Just as he was getting angry, Li Si Niu lowered his voice and said, "You just poked a hornet's nest, and you can still sleep this soundly. Be careful; they might retaliate against you." After saying that, he returned to his own bunk.
Fei Hu thought about it and realized that Li Si Niu was right. He had just hit four people, and there was still one Short Fatty who hadn't gotten involved yet. If he fell asleep and they ambushed him, he would be in serious trouble. He couldn't afford to sleep; if he got injured internally, it would ruin his life. Why was Li Si Niu reminding him? Was it out of good intentions? As he pondered this, all his sleepiness vanished.
Around two-thirty, the guard opened the door and shouted, "Time to get to work! Continue with this morning's tasks and gather in the yard. The two newcomers come with me to get your tools."
Oh my god, they really had to do labor reform! This Ni Ling had caused him a lot of trouble. Fei Hu followed Li Si Niu outside while grumbling about Ni Ling in his heart. When Li Si Niu got closer, he whispered, "That Short Fatty who was sitting still earlier is probably the boss of our dormitory. You need to be careful; these people have their ways. When we start working later, don't let your guard down. Pay attention to my signals; I'll be right by your side."
Fei Hu heard this and immediately felt suspicious. What exactly was this person up to? He couldn't figure it out, but whatever! As long as someone was helping him, they were a good person in his eyes. The guard in front noticed Fei Hu and Li Si Niu whispering and suddenly turned around, saying, "You two need to move faster; save your chatter for the worksite." The two hurriedly quickened their pace.
To their surprise, when they lined up, there were several hundred inmates in the yard standing in formation. The guards led them away in groups. Fei Hu's group had over a hundred people divided into five teams. The leader of Fei Hu's team was none other than the Short Fatty who had been called "big brother" in their dormitory. Upon seeing him as the leader, Fei Hu's heart sank; it would be strange if he didn't seek revenge on the newcomers.
The guard approached Short Fatty and said, "Chen Yibiao, these two are new arrivals. Don't assign them too much work at first; once they're familiar with things, they'll work just like everyone else. Do you understand?"
Chen Yibiao replied loudly, "Understood, officer," followed by a sly grin that Fei Hu noticed from nearby.
The team stopped on a hillside where Chen Yibiao cleared his throat and said, "This is our new task: clear all the stones from this area and pile them on the side to create a ridge. They must not roll down the hill; if they do, you’ll have to carry them back up. Once you've cleared the stones, level the ground."
As Chen Yibiao spoke, he used a crowbar to draw a circle around the area with the most and largest stones and then pointed at Fei Hu and Li Si Niu saying, "This is your area; you must finish clearing it before quitting time."
Fei Hu glanced at it without saying a word while Li Si Niu shook his head and quietly said, "Isn't this ridiculous? Why don't you come over here and show me how it's done?"
Chen Yibiao suddenly turned his head and pointed at Li Si Niu, shouting loudly, "What did you say? Can you speak up?"
Li Si Niu's expression changed immediately, and he smiled, saying, "I didn't say anything, I was just joking with him."
"Is that so? Then tell me, what joke did Li Si Niu make with you?" Chen Yibiao approached, clearly looking to cause trouble for Li Si Niu, but Fei Hu couldn't stand Chen Yibiao's arrogance.
"Report to the team leader, Li Si Niu just told me that a dog is farting," Fei Hu's words made the entire group of over twenty people burst into laughter. Chen Yibiao's face turned from red to white, and the veins on his neck bulged out; it seemed he was really furious.
However, Chen Yibiao still held back his anger. He waved at the fat guy who had been beaten up by Fei Hu earlier that day and said, "Zhang Gui, you and Li Lin, Wang Desheng, and Lin Ping should level the area in the east where there are no stones." Fei Hu saw this and realized that he was clearly protecting his subordinates. He could handle that area alone without needing four people. Fei Hu shook his head helplessly.
No matter how angry he felt or how unfair the distribution was, he still had to work. It wasn't possible to seek justice from the prison guards; this place clearly wasn't about reasoning. Fei Hu took off his shirt, rolled up his sleeves, and got to work. Doing heavy labor was Fei Hu's strong suit; he was just dissatisfied with the distribution. In a short while, he had managed to clear a flat piece of ground.
Seeing how capable Fei Hu was and how full of energy he seemed, Li Si Niu also got into it. The two of them carried stones together, placing all the stones assigned to them neatly by the side of the ground. Chen Yibiao initially wanted to deal with Fei Hu to assert dominance and take revenge for his brothers but didn't expect this guy to be so competent.
It seemed his plan had fallen through. As Chen Yibiao sat on the ground pondering what method he could use to deal with this guy again, a man of medium build in his thirties approached him and sat down across from him, softly asking, "What's wrong? Lost in thought?"
Chen Yibiao looked up as if in awe of this person. He smiled and said, "Black Brother, have you finished your work? Do you still have time to drop by?"
"You really are getting more forgetful by the day. Can't you change how you address me? Black! Watch your mouth next time or I'll slap you," the man referred to as Black Brother stood up with an unhappy expression.
Chen Yibiao quickly said, "I was just momentarily angered by that kid; don't be mad. I know I should call you Brother Bai now; you shouldn't be angry anymore!" Chen Yibiao put on a fawning expression as he tried hard to please this so-called Brother Bai.
"Alright then. Tell them from now on to call me that when they see me. Now tell me what this new kid did to make you angry so Brother Bai can help you get back at him," Brother Bai's eyes were fixed on Fei Hu who was working hard.
Chen Yibiao quickly stood up and leaned closer to Brother Bai's ear to recount everything that had happened at noon in detail. After pondering for a moment, Brother Bai said, "This kid is quite impressive; Zhang Gui and his group are decent fighters too. Ordinary people are no match for them. We need to find out who this person is; otherwise, someone might be in trouble."
"Got it, Brother Bai, you should leave quickly! The guard seems to be coming," Chen Yibiao whispered, casually picking up the iron crowbar from the ground and digging at his feet a few times. Brother Bai turned around and slipped behind a dirt mound, disappearing in an instant.
Li Si Niu, while working, smiled and asked Fei Hu, "What does your brother do? He fights well and is also skilled at work; it's really impressive."
Fei Hu wiped the sweat from his forehead and replied with a smile, "I do whatever needs to be done; this work is nothing. It just depends on whether I want to do it or not. That Chen Yibiao is too much; who does he think he is?" Fei Hu said, glaring fiercely at Chen Yibiao, who was sitting on the ground enjoying the scenery.
Li Si Niu chuckled and said, "You're really a person of strong character, hating evil as if it were your own. You can't tolerate even a grain of sand in your eyes. Actually, there are plenty of people like that around here; if they didn't exist, the prison would need a lot more guards. This is just a special product of a special environment."
Fei Hu listened and realized that the existence of such people was somewhat inevitable; society is indeed too complicated for him to handle.
Time flew by as they worked, and soon Zhang Gui and the others finished their tasks. The four of them sat down on the ground and started chatting. Everyone saw what was happening and felt angry but dared not speak out.
Fei Hu could no longer hold back. He dropped the iron crowbar in his hand and walked over to Chen Yibiao, who was lost in thought. He quietly said, "Team Leader, I can't finish my work; please assign a few more people to help."
Chen Yibiao was taken aback. Seeing Fei Hu's furious eyes and terrifying expression, he stood up and softly said, "There’s no such thing as helping or not helping here. You need to finish your own work. If you can't finish it, don't expect to leave."
Fei Hu stepped forward and coldly replied, "Your distribution of tasks is unfair. I have exceeded my workload compared to them, so I don’t need to work anymore; I want to rest too."
"You dare!" Chen Yibiao glared with wide eyes, looking somewhat frightening.
Fei Hu stood his ground confidently and said, "I dare! What do I have to be afraid of? Today I will show everyone how you assign work tasks, Chen Yibiao." With that, he turned around and sat down.
