Yingzi's wound was treated and quickly improved. The doctor prescribed some oral anti-inflammatory medication, and the three of them left the hospital while joking and laughing.
It was quite a coincidence that Chen Hui's home was really close to the hospital. In just a few minutes, they arrived at her house, a clean and elegantly situated small courtyard with a two-story building and a sedan parked in the yard, which reflected the family's taste in living.
As soon as they entered the yard, Chen Hui's parents came out to greet them. It was evident that they were warm towards their daughter's friends. After exchanging a few polite words, Chen Hui's parents busied themselves preparing lunch, leaving the three young people alone in the living room.
"Wow, your family is doing well, and you're an only child," Fei Hu said, looking around with curiosity.
Chen Hui smiled and replied, "It's okay. Although my parents are both retired, they receive pensions every month. I've saved up my salary too, so there aren't many big expenses at home. Besides, we live in the suburbs, where costs are lower than in the city. Life is comfortable here; you don't feel the fast-paced pressure of urban life."
Yingzi lightly nudged Fei Hu and whispered, "Are you envious? Why not stay here?"
Fei Hu shot Yingzi a glare, but this kind of life was indeed enviable—peaceful and warm without conflicts. Being together as a family was something money couldn't buy.
"Alright, enough talk. You two should wash up and change your clothes; you look a bit frightening," Chen Hui said, glancing at Fei Hu who was covered in mud from running around in the fields earlier. The doctor had given them strange looks at the hospital.
After washing up and changing clothes, they felt much better. Chen Hui was quite diligent; in no time at all, she had washed Yingzi's and Fei Hu's dirty clothes and hung them out in the sun in the yard. She smiled and said, "The sunlight after this typhoon is really strong; these clothes will dry quickly. But I have to thank this typhoon; otherwise, how could you have come to my house? It's something I never would have dreamed of."
"Indeed, no one expected this sudden turn of events," Fei Hu said but then hesitated. Chen Hui was very perceptive; she glanced at Fei Hu but didn't press further. Normally, anyone would ask about their messy situation since it had happened so abruptly, but Chen Hui didn't ask a single question.
After finishing with the laundry, Chen Hui took Yingzi's phone and said, "This came out of your pocket; you should keep it safe."
"It's fine," Yingzi replied as she took her phone. However, when she swiped her finger across the screen, her expression changed.
Fei Hu noticed something was off and quickly asked, "What's wrong? Is your phone broken? It's been a while without any calls; that seems unusual."
Yingzi shook her head helplessly and said, "It's over. I accidentally pressed on my phone while fumbling around earlier; now I can't even turn it on. What should I do? Ni Ling is probably panicking right now too. I didn't save her number anywhere else; what am I going to do?" Yingzi looked anxious.
Fei Hu thought for a moment and said to Yingzi, "Just use mine." Although this would break his agreement with Ni Ling, given the urgency of the situation, he couldn't worry about that now. If he couldn't contact Ni Ling, he wouldn't be able to deliver what he had on him tonight either, which would undoubtedly affect their plans—this was a major incident that couldn't be delayed.
Yingzi glanced at Fei Hu and impatiently said, "What good is your phone? You don't have her number."
Fei Hu smiled and said, "Yes, I saved her number in my phone."
"How do you have her number? That seems a bit off. Do you know her?" Yingzi looked puzzled.
Fei Hu chuckled and replied, "She's a stunning beauty. Isn't it normal for me to save her number?"
Yingzi shot him a glare and scolded, "You're not being serious. What time is it?" She grabbed Fei Hu's phone, flipped through it a few times, and made the call.
Seeing that they were discussing something serious, Chen Hui excused himself to the kitchen to help his parents cook.
"Hello, Ni Ling? This is Yingzi. We're at 129 Pingdi Village, Shanghang. Just come here directly," Yingzi said briefly before hanging up.
Soon, the dishes were served on the table, and they were indeed quite lavish. Fei Hu was surprised that here, just a few dishes could rival those from a restaurant. It seemed that the people here lived quite well.
Chen Hui's mother, in her fifties, had deep wrinkles etched into her face by time, but it was clear she must have been a great beauty in her youth. Chen Hui's dad was an ordinary middle-aged man with kind eyes who was very amiable and kept urging Fei Hu to eat more.
Being a woman, Chen Hui's mother was very observant of the emotional dynamics at the table. When she noticed that her daughter kept serving food into Fei Hu's bowl, she had already formed some conclusions in her mind.
"What do you young people do for work? Where do you work?" Chen Hui's mother finally spoke up. This was something everyone expected, except for Fei Hu, who hadn't thought about this aspect at all. He felt relaxed at the table while Yingzi appeared somewhat tense.
Fei Hu wanted to respond but didn't know how to say it. Just as he hesitated, Chen Hui jumped in to speak first: "Mom, you can't ask people like that. Some jobs are not convenient to discuss. Anyway, he works in City A, and he's from the Northwest. Got it?"
"I wasn't asking you; look how anxious you are," Chen Hui's mom shot an annoyed glance at him, hinting at her thoughts.
Fei Hu awkwardly scratched his head. If it weren't for Chen Hui coming to his rescue, he wouldn't have known how to answer and would have embarrassed himself.
Just as everyone was enjoying their meal, a pleasant voice echoed from the living room: "Oh, eating so happily without waiting for me! Who are all these people?"
Everyone turned around to see Ni Ling in police uniform, holding her police cap and smiling as she walked into the room.
Chen Hui's family was taken aback; they didn't know Ni Ling. The arrival of a police officer wasn't necessarily a good sign. Seeing this, Yingzi quickly stood up and introduced her to Chen Hui's family: "She is my friend; she's here to see me."
Everyone smiled upon hearing this. Chen Hui quickly went out to greet them, saying with a smile, "Since you are Sister Ying's friend, please come in and have a meal with us."
Ni Ling walked in and merely nodded at Fei Hu. Since he was being so indifferent, he didn’t want to appear overly friendly. Fei Hu remained seated and politely nodded back.
Chen Hui's parents were particularly hospitable and insisted on setting a bowl and chopsticks for Ni Ling. Soon, everyone began to eat together. Ni Ling smiled and said, "You all are really impressive; you have friends here too. I feel lucky to be here. To be honest, I'm quite hungry right now."
Chen Hui hurriedly served Ni Ling a large bowl of rice. Ni Ling was not polite and picked it up to eat; it seemed she was indeed very hungry. Yingzi was serving Ni Ling some dishes while smiling, saying, "These are all our Fei Hu's friends; he has good connections." As Yingzi spoke, she glanced at Fei Hu, who was focused on his meal.
Ni Ling chuckled and said, "Of course! He’s handsome, and his skills are so good. When a girl stands next to him, she feels completely safe. Who wouldn’t like that?"
While eating, Chen Hui heard what Ni Ling said and jokingly asked Fei Hu, "You can fight? Looks like you’re not such a good guy after all."
Fei Hu smiled and replied, "I usually only defend myself; I never initiate harm. It's a matter of principle."
Everyone chatted happily while eating.
After the meal, Ni Ling and Yingzi went into Chen Hui's bedroom and closed the door. They took quite some time before coming out. Ni Ling took something from Fei Hu's hands, looked at it, and said, "Yingzi has an injury on her shoulder; it's best if you wait a few days before heading back. You’ll have to take good care of her during this time." Fei Hu nodded silently, thinking that he didn’t need her to remind him.
Ni Ling then greeted Chen Hui's family. As she was leaving, she specifically told Chen Hui, "Now that we’ve all become friends, remember to let us know when you come to A City in the future so we can get together."
Chen Hui was very pleased to hear this from Ni Ling. After seeing her off, Chen Hui smiled at Fei Hu and asked, "Can you stay at my house for a few more days?" Fei Hu looked at Chen Hui’s hopeful expression and silently nodded in agreement.
