The same procedure was followed, but this time Fei Hu was not personally interrogated by Ni Ling. After taking turns twice, it seemed that what Fei Hu said was true. The police found no suspicious points on him and released him. By the time he left the police station, it was already dark.
Fei Hu wandered aimlessly on the street, feeling truly exhausted. Everything that had happened in the past two days could be summed up in one word: "back." Just like today's unfortunate incident, he couldn't escape it. Fortunately, he had not been killed by a bomb or caught in crossfire; he was still standing on the street and could freely admire the beautiful women passing by. Thinking of this, a bitter smile appeared on Fei Hu's face.
Suddenly, a red sedan brushed past him and came to a stop. As the window rolled down, he saw Ni Ling in casual clothes smiling at him and calling out, "Get in! I'm treating you to dinner."
Fei Hu initially hesitated to get in the car. Just moments ago, they were like strangers, and now she was inviting him to dinner—there must be something behind it. After a moment of hesitation, he decided to get in. Ni Ling glanced at the not-so-happy Fei Hu and said with a smile, "Don't be mad; I came to make it up to you! I'll toast you a couple of times later."
The car stopped in front of a country house. Fei Hu followed Ni Ling upstairs. It was a small restaurant, but its interior was quite elegant and comfortable. Just looking around made one feel more at ease.
Ni Ling ordered a small private room and seemed very familiar with the place. Without even looking at the menu, she named several dishes and then ordered a few bottles of beer. Fei Hu knew that her status allowed her to drink two beers with him, which was already a great honor for him.
Once all the dishes were served, Ni Ling sent the waiter away and personally locked the door from the inside before smilingly asking, "Are you upset that I didn't greet you today?"
Fei Hu shook his head and replied, "It's fine; you're an officer, and we're just ordinary people. It doesn't matter whether we greet each other or not. I was just afraid that if you got angry, you'd mistake me for a thief and shoot me."
"Hahaha! What are you talking about? What kind of person do you think I am? Besides, I know you; even if I didn't know you, none of you would resist. Why would I shoot? What do you think police officers are?" Ni Ling said as she poured Fei Hu a glass of beer and handed it to him with a smile. This woman was already beautiful, but when she smiled like that, she looked even more stunning. All of Fei Hu's grievances vanished in an instant.
Fei Hu ate and drank without reservation and asked with some confusion, "What exactly happened today? I'm completely in the dark about it and almost got blown up."
Ni Ling chuckled lightly and said, "I found it strange too. You know what? When I saw it was you today, I was really shocked! Why is everything related to you? Sometimes your luck is just too bad! You were just trying to catch a ride with someone else; how much could you save? And now you've ended up with a major drug dealer!"
"What? Who's the major drug dealer?" Fei Hu exclaimed in surprise.
Ni Ling quickly gestured for him to lower his voice. "Keep it down! This kind of thing shouldn't be spoken about so loudly; it's supposed to be top secret. But I want to ask you something, so I'm revealing a bit to you. Otherwise, how could I casually tell someone else about this?"
Fei Hu understood very well that the cases Ni Ling was involved in were significant. After thinking for a moment, he said, "You'd better give me a rough idea so I can connect today's events. Maybe I can sort out something useful."
Ni Ling leaned closer to Fei Hu and lowered her voice, saying, "We received a tip-off that a batch of drugs was going to be traded by the seaside, so we set up an ambush early on. We originally planned to wipe them out and capture both parties involved in the transaction, but unexpectedly, this guy codenamed 'Beauty' turned out to be extremely cunning. He managed to slip away and let you all pave the way for him. It's a pity! He got away again."
"Oh! Is that so? This guy is quite something. He has a gun and even has a bomb strapped to the driver's waist, so we have to listen to him. But I really didn't know he had us deliver drugs," Fei Hu said, his face filled with anger. It was the first time in his life he had been coerced like this, especially with drugs involved. If he had known, even if it meant killing him, he wouldn't have gone along with it.
Ni Ling poured another drink for Fei Hu and softly said, "You are fortunate amidst misfortune. The two boxes contained nothing but flour, which is why you could get out so quickly. If they had been filled with drugs, even if you had no connection to this matter, it wouldn't have been so easy for you to escape. Moreover, if we hadn't set up an ambush today and they discovered the goods were fake, would you have been able to get away? They wouldn't care whether you were coerced or not because nobody knows who this Beauty is."
Fei Hu kept turning his glass in his hands. What seemed like a simple matter now sounded quite frightening.
Ni Ling paused for a moment and gently asked Fei Hu, "You were in the car for at least thirty or forty minutes without noticing anything unusual about him, like his appearance or voice. Can you think carefully?"
"A codename like Beauty—could she be a woman? But when he spoke, he always lowered his voice and sounded very cold. From his tone, I could tell he was indeed a man; however, he wasn't very tall—probably around one meter sixty—and rather slender," Fei Hu recalled slowly. After all, he hadn't had direct contact with him and knew very little.
Ni Ling took out a small notebook and recorded what Fei Hu said. She reminded him, "Just because the codename is Beauty doesn't necessarily mean he's a woman; sometimes it could be possible. Think carefully—when you were in close proximity to him, did anything special stand out?"
"Close proximity," Fei Hu repeated Ni Ling's words.
From getting into the car to getting out, he had always sat in the front while the other person sat in the back. Although they had spoken a few times, Fei Hu could still vividly remember each conversation. Especially when he was about to look back and got hit; suddenly something clicked in his mind. He fell into deep thought while running his fingers through his hair, making Ni Ling beside him feel anxious.
Suddenly, Fei Hu slapped the table excitedly and said to Ni Ling, "She's a woman! Absolutely a woman!"
"On what basis do you say she's a woman? You need solid evidence; this can't be based on feelings alone; otherwise, it could lead to serious mistakes. Can you explain?" Ni Ling asked with an expression of delight that surpassed Columbus discovering new lands.
Fei Hu poured himself a glass of beer and after finishing it in one gulp, smiled and said, "From when I got into the car until I got out, she spoke in a suppressed voice, indicating that her voice wasn't genuine but rather fake. Also, when she hit me, perhaps due to excitement she couldn't control herself properly—I caught a hint of a woman's voice. Furthermore, when she put handcuffs on us and leaned closer due to her posture, I smelled a fragrance typical of women. Plus her petite stature—can you say she's not a woman?"
At this point, Fei Hu burst into a proud laugh, while Ni Ling looked excited. She kept pondering over the few words Fei Hu had just said. If Fei Hu's deduction was correct, it meant that a big fish had truly appeared, and all the auxiliary work done over the past couple of years would not have been in vain.
Continuously reflecting on it, Ni Ling finally slapped the table and giggled, "Fei Hu, it's such a waste for you not to be a police officer. How about I recommend you for a position as an auxiliary officer? Your thinking is really meticulous; even ordinary detectives can't reach your level. Have you learned from someone?"
Being praised by a beautiful woman felt like a blessing. Fei Hu smiled and shook his head, saying, "What do I need to learn that for? I just think about problems a bit more than usual. Plus, I've been influenced by Yingzi; her way of analyzing problems is always like this." Mentioning Yingzi made Fei Hu feel a slight discomfort because it reminded him of Ye Xiaofei.
Ni Ling looked at Fei Hu and after finishing all her drink, said, "I'm really sorry. Every time I invite you to dinner, my intentions aren't pure. You don't think I'm using you, do you?"
Fei Hu shook his head and replied, "It's fine; we're all friends. Besides, this matter is just a small effort on my part. It’s nothing much. Even if you didn’t invite me to dinner, I would still share what I know about these things. But your inspiration is better; if they were to interrogate me like that, I really wouldn't remember anything." As he spoke, Fei Hu smiled and stood up.
"What's wrong? Do you have something urgent to attend to?" Ni Ling asked with a smile as she glanced at Fei Hu.
Fei Hu nodded and said, "Just a trivial matter, but it's no big deal. You can just give me a ride later." He took out his phone from his pocket and checked it; his expression changed when he realized the battery was dead. He hadn't even noticed it over the past couple of days; things had been quite chaotic for him.
"What's wrong? Is your phone broken? You can use mine if you want," Ni Ling offered as she pulled out her phone.
Fei Hu thought for a moment and said, "Forget it! I wanted to call Yingzi, but she knows your number. Didn't you say you didn't want her to know we know each other?"
"Oh! That's fine now. It was necessary before, but there's no need for that anymore. You can tell her we met by chance and not because of her," Ni Ling said as she retrieved Yingzi's number and dialed it before handing the phone to Fei Hu.
When Yingzi heard Fei Hu's voice on the phone, she immediately got angry: "Why is it you? Where have you been?"
