Sun Li arrived shortly after, driving her own car. As Fei Hu got in, she drove straight to the train station. The morning roads were bustling with activity, and the flowing traffic made it feel like this city was truly vast.
Fei Hu dared not look directly at Sun Li, only glancing at the beautiful woman beside her from the corner of her eye. It was she who had transformed Fei Hu into a true man in every sense, yet there was an insurmountable chasm between them. It was a matter of ideology and lifestyle, which meant they could only ever be lovers or close friends.
"Fei Hu! You need to learn to live. This era of fighting and killing is over. I hope when I see you next time, you'll have changed," Sun Li said suddenly while driving, clearly showing that she still cared about Fei Hu.
Fei Hu smiled and replied, "Okay, I'll take your advice. But when I come to your house next time, I hope you can kick me out."
"Why?" Sun Li asked with a hint of suspicion in her smile.
Fei Hu sighed and said, "I hope you can change your lifestyle and settle down! When I see you next time, I really hope you'll say, 'Don't come looking for me anymore; I already have a boyfriend.' That would be what I want to see most."
"Alright! Mind your own business. Wherever you are, if you run into trouble, just call me. My number hasn't changed, and Zeng Xin has been activated. If I have time, I might come to see you," Sun Li said as she slowly parked the car. When Fei Hu looked up, she realized they had arrived at the train station.
There was a hint of reluctance during their farewell. Sun Li took the initiative to kiss Fei Hu, who wrapped her arms around Sun Li's head. They shared a long kiss; at that moment, they resembled a couple deeply in love. However, using the term "couple" for them felt entirely inappropriate. Gritting her teeth, Fei Hu pushed Sun Li away, opened the car door, and jumped out. She walked straight ahead without looking back; she couldn't bear to see the sadness in Sun Li's eyes.
A good man should aspire to greatness and not be burdened by romantic entanglements. After silently reciting this thought, Fei Hu stepped into the ticket hall.
It had been over a month since Ye Xiaofei started school, but she still couldn't immerse herself in this atmosphere. She knew deep down that she hadn't forgotten someone; he had hurt her too deeply because he was the first man to enter her heart.
Ye Xiaofei sat on the balcony of the Student Apartment, breathing in the fresh air and watching the sun rise from the east. At that moment, she felt an overwhelming sense of emotion. She hadn't expected that the conditions at Noble School in her home country were no worse than those abroad; this high-end apartment was fully equipped and almost like home. To ensure peace and quiet, Ye Xiaofei paid extra to have a room to herself instead of sharing it with someone else—something that was more flexible than abroad.
Today was Sunday, and many classmates had gone home. However, since entering school, Ye Xiaofei had no thoughts of returning home. As a transfer student, she had a lot of coursework to catch up on; moreover, she truly didn't want to go back because at home, conversations between her grandfather and Yingzi often mentioned Fei Hu's name. Every time she heard that name, her heart would involuntarily tighten.
Several unknown little birds chirped incessantly on the large tree in front of her balcony. Living on the third floor allowed Ye Xiaofei to experience this view up close. Suddenly, one little bird flapped its wings and climbed onto another's back. Seeing this made Ye Xiaofei feel a pang of sorrow; once upon a time, she had been as close as glue with Fei Hu. Who could have predicted that events would unfold later that left her unable to let go for a lifetime?
During this time, whenever Ye Xiaofei had free moments, she began sorting through those events. Gradually, she calmed down from her impulsiveness and recalled what happened that day. She wasn't foolish; it dawned on her that it had been someone's scheme—a real two birds with one stone situation. She realized it was her own recklessness that had led to an irretrievable mess due to not managing her emotions properly.
She finally understood why her grandfather and Yingzi were so tolerant of Fei Hu in this matter; they had already seen the truth, while she remained oblivious. Thinking back to Sister Wu's birthday party, Ye Xiaofei felt a pang of regret and wanted to slap herself twice for being so foolish, having been used by Ye Wei and Ye Wu. But at that time, how could she have controlled herself?
Just as Ye Xiaofei was immersed in deep regret, her phone on the table rang. This was her new number, known only to a few family members and her teachers; she hadn't even given it to her classmates.
Ye Xiaofei rushed to answer it, seeing that it was a family phone number. She quickly picked up, and Sister Wu's warm voice came through: "Xiaofei! You’re not still sleeping, are you? I hope I’m not disturbing you!"
"No, Sister Wu, I've been up for a while. I'm sitting on the balcony soaking up the sun. Is there something you need?" Ye Xiaofei asked cheerfully.
Sister Wu paused for a moment before saying, "You really don't understand! It's been a month since you've been at school, and you haven't come back to see your grandfather. Today is Sunday; get ready! Yingzi has already driven to your school." Without waiting for Ye Xiaofei to respond, Sister Wu hung up.
Meanwhile, on the train from City A to Shanghang, Fei Hu had changed into the new shirt Sun Li bought for him. He looked out the window with renewed energy but suddenly thought of Ye Xiaofei. After all, they had once loved each other. This trip to Shanghang might last two months, three months, or even half a year. In such a long time, anything could happen.
Fei Hu hesitated for a moment with his phone in hand before pulling up Ye Xiaofei's number and dialing it. The voice prompt replied, "The number you dialed is no longer in service." No longer in service? Fei Hu immediately understood that Ye Xiaofei had changed her number; she didn't want anyone to know, including him. Otherwise, she would have sent a message informing him of her new number. It seemed she wanted to forget him completely.
If she wanted to forget, then let her forget! After all, he wasn't exactly a good person either. Just like Sun Li said that morning, no one dared to marry him. It was true; somehow he had ended up with several women. The mistakes he made were his alone to bear.
The train sped along while Fei Hu had no interest in the beautiful scenery outside. Instead, he was irritated by the couple sitting across from him who were all over each other. Just when he was feeling utterly bored, his phone suddenly rang. He pulled it out and saw it was A-Lian calling. He quickly answered, "Hello! A-Lian, what’s up?"
"What's wrong? Can't I call you if there's nothing going on?" A-Lian's tone was somewhat stiff.
Fei Hu paused briefly before smiling and saying, "No, that's not what I meant. I just wanted to ask if those people at the factory gate have left? I'm really sorry for causing you so much trouble."
"What's happened to you? You've become so wishy-washy! I just wanted to check how you're doing. This morning I saw in the newspaper that there was a brawl in a neighborhood with many injuries, so I was worried about you," A-Lian said towards the end with her voice dropping slightly; it seemed she was genuinely scared.
Fei Hu felt a wave of emotion wash over him and quietly said, "I'm fine, A-Lian. I forgot to tell you and Xiao Qi that I'm on a train heading out of town and won't be back for two or three months. You all take care of yourselves. Also, please let Bald Zhang know about this; just don’t mention the specific address. Once everything is stable for me, I'll let you know."
A-Lian on the other end of the line paused for a moment before reluctantly saying, "Alright!" and then hung up the phone.
At noon, the train arrived in Shanghang, and Fei Hu first found a general hotel to stay in. This time was different from the last; he had to be frugal because he had no idea when his wandering life would come to an end.
In fact, this hotel costing around a hundred yuan was not bad at all; it had everything he needed. Fei Hu made up his mind and registered for ten nights at once, preparing himself for a long battle.
As the train was approaching the station today, Fei Hu called Chen Hui, but her phone was turned off. Feeling helpless, he sent a text message saying that he had arrived in Shanghang and might stay for a month or two. He asked her to come visit him if she had time.
Suddenly, Fei Hu thought of Wang Yun. Should he contact her? He felt conflicted; after all, they had already been closer after that one encounter. Whether it was his fault or Wang Yun's willingness, they had crossed a line in their relationship. If he only reached out to Chen Hui and ignored Wang Yun, it would be even more awkward if Wang Yun found out.
Fei Hu tossed and turned in bed, feeling uneasy. He decided to call Wang Yun. The call connected immediately, and Wang Yun's excited voice came through: "Is it you, Fei Hu? Why did you think of calling me? I'm so happy!"
"I'm glad to hear your voice too. I'm in Shanghang now; if you have time, please come visit. Also, Chen Hui's phone is off, and I couldn't get through. If you see her, just let her know," Fei Hu said, feeling much better upon hearing Wang Yun's cheerful tone.
Wang Yun chuckled on the phone: "Chen Hui went home this morning; she’s probably sleeping now. I'll head to Shanghang shortly. Where are you staying? Tell me quickly so I can find you when I arrive."
Fei Hu hesitated for a moment before giving her his exact location. He never expected that while he wanted someone else to come first, the unexpected visitor would arrive early instead—such is the peculiarity of life.
After buying some daily necessities on the street and grabbing a bowl of noodles, Fei Hu hurried back to the hotel.
The weather this season made him sweat profusely after just a short time outside. As soon as he returned, he jumped into the shower. Just as he finished washing up and was about to get dressed, there was a loud knock on the door. Fei Hu paused; it might be hotel staff looking for him.
Without even having time to put on his clothes, he opened the door and was taken aback by what he saw.
