As soon as Fei Hu arrived at the police station, he was placed in solitary confinement. He had a nagging feeling that this time could be serious; it was very likely that he had injured someone severely during the earlier altercation. Otherwise, that bastard Shrimp Ball wouldn't have reported it, since they were in the wrong to begin with.
The iron door swung open with a clang, and a young police officer called out to Fei Hu, "Come with me."
In the interrogation room, two officers were already seated—one was a middle-aged man in his thirties, and the other was a woman who appeared to be in her mid-twenties, looking like a college student.
Fei Hu sat down in front of them, and the female officer began to ask, "Name, age, place of origin..." It was the same old routine, and Fei Hu answered each question patiently.
Once Fei Hu finished answering, the middle-aged police officer flipped through his notebook and said sternly, "Fei Hu, why did you suddenly attack passersby on Luoyu Bridge tonight, resulting in two people being hospitalized? One of them has a head injury and is still in critical condition. Do you understand that this is a crime? You can't think that just because you're skilled in fighting, you can use violence against anyone."
The unexpected had finally happened. Fei Hu's eyes widened in shock, and he couldn't speak for a long time; it was too surprising. Seeing Fei Hu so astonished, the middle-aged officer continued, "Let me ask you again: did you not attack these people? Is what I'm saying not true? If it is, please don't waste time and sign here."
"Why should I sign?" Fei Hu suddenly shouted loudly, clenching his fists and looking extremely intimidating.
The middle-aged police officer waved his hand at Fei Hu and said, "Calm down; this is a police station. We discuss matters reasonably here. Yelling won't help. Tell me why you won't sign. Didn't you just admit that you hit these people?"
The young female officer glanced at Fei Hu and gently said, "Please don't get agitated. Our case is based on facts; we won't wrong an innocent person or let a guilty one go free. If this is true, denying it won't help because we will find other evidence related to this matter. However, if you didn't do this, you need to explain why. Yelling won't benefit you at all because you're facing the law, not just us." The young officer seemed surprisingly articulate for her age, causing Fei Hu to deflate like a punctured balloon.
Taking a deep breath, Fei Hu gradually calmed down and recounted everything that had happened that evening from start to finish. To convince the police of his story, he even mentioned Chen Hui.
The female officer took notes diligently and seemed very attentive to what Fei Hu was saying. The middle-aged police officer snorted dismissively and said, "According to your account, you're claiming to be acting heroically or in self-defense. But don't forget that your word alone doesn't count; we still need to investigate. Just sit tight here!"
"When can I leave?" Fei Hu asked anxiously.
The middle-aged police officer grinned coldly and replied, "Leave? You just got here; you'll be staying for a few days! Why are you so eager to get out? Planning to disturb public order again?" Hearing this made Fei Hu's anger surge; what kind of nonsense was this coming from a police officer?
The female police officer smiled and nodded at Fei Hu, indicating for him to be quiet.
With a loud clang, the iron door was locked again, and they brought Fei Hu back inside. Looking at the dim lights in the room, Fei Hu felt utterly lost. This place was easy to enter but difficult to leave. What should he do? He was unfamiliar with the surroundings, and besides, no one outside knew about his current situation—only Chen Hui had come in with him, and now he had no idea what was happening with her.
Fei Hu's mind was in turmoil; how could he have gotten into such a mess on his very first day? He lay on the bare bed, thinking about the worst possible outcome—he hoped he wouldn't be sentenced! The thought made him jump up from the bed; if that were the case, it would truly be the end for him.
Holding his head in despair, Fei Hu felt overwhelmed. He hadn't rested well last night and had barely blinked during the day. At that moment, he was utterly exhausted; his eyelids felt heavy. Finally, he resolved to sleep, regardless of what tomorrow might bring. If necessary, he could go back inside; after all, he had been in prison before—it wasn't a big deal.
When a ray of light fell on the bed, Fei Hu scratched his arm, which was swollen from mosquito bites, and sat up. He stretched and realized how sore his body was. He then understood that sleeping on a bare bed was not comfortable at all.
"Fei Hu, please come to the interrogation room," came a shout as the iron door swung open with a clang.
After sitting down, Fei Hu looked up and noticed that this time the middle-aged male police officer wasn't there; instead, an older officer who looked nearly fifty took his place. The young female officer still wore a smile, which made Fei Hu feel somewhat at ease.
"This is our Chief Wang; he has something to say to you. Please don't get agitated; listen carefully before expressing your opinion," said the female officer with another smile directed at Fei Hu, leaving him quite puzzled.
Chief Wang cleared his throat and waited until Fei Hu focused on him before smiling slightly and saying, "Here's the situation: regarding what happened last night, after gathering evidence from various sources, we confirmed that you were indeed acting in self-defense. However, due to a malfunctioning camera in that area, it has caused us significant trouble in gathering evidence. Just now, the injured guy at the hospital woke up. After repeated questioning from us, he finally admitted that he hit his head on the bridge railing while trying to escape."
Upon hearing this, Fei Hu couldn't help but close his eyes in excitement—he seemed to have found hope.
Chief Wang continued, "Because last night’s incident involved a local thug known as Shrimp Ball who falsely accused you, we need sufficient evidence to keep him in check. Therefore, the officers who handled your case had to use some deception as a means of necessity. We hope you won't take it personally; just be careful when you go out because Shrimp Ball has many underlings." Chief Wang's tone was very sincere.
As long as he could get out of here, Fei Hu didn't care about anything else. He quickly replied, "It's fine as long as everything is clear. Thank you!" As he spoke, he nodded at the female officer. He thought that if all police officers were like her, perhaps criminals would voluntarily confess—though he knew this was an unrealistic joke.
Chief Wang stood up and smiled at Fei Hu. "You can go now! A girl named Chen Hui has been waiting here for you and hasn't left yet. Last night she caused quite a scene at our station; it's clear she has deep feelings for you!" Chief Wang said while patting Fei Hu's shoulder. Fei Hu felt deeply moved; he suddenly thought that these police officers were quite decent.
As soon as Fei Hu stepped into the courtyard of the police station, he saw Chen Hui anxiously pacing back and forth. As soon as she spotted him, she rushed over and asked urgently, "Are you okay? Did they give you a hard time?"
"No, isn't it you outside? How could they dare!" Fei Hu said, making a face at Chen Hui.
Chen Hui complained, "I was so anxious! You know? I was restless all night last night, and in the end, they were so annoying that they asked me to go back first. But I refused. You didn't come out, where else could I go? Don't you think so?" As she spoke, she pulled Fei Hu towards the entrance of the police station.
"Hey! Wait a minute!" A woman's pleasant voice came over. Fei Hu quickly turned around, only to find it was a female police officer. His heart sank; could something have happened again? Once bitten by a snake, one is afraid of a rope for ten years.
Chen Hui, who had been happy just moments ago, immediately darkened her expression. Without waiting for the police officer to speak, she asked unfriendly, "What do you want? Didn't we agree that everything was fine? Is this how you police do your job, going back on your word? Aren't you afraid of being laughed at?" Wow! Chen Hui really was fierce; she showed no mercy even to the police.
"Don't be nervous. I just wanted to say hello to Fei Hu. Is that okay? Miss, you really keep a close eye on him," the female police officer said with a smile, which made Chen Hui feel a bit embarrassed.
Fei Hu was confused; it seemed like the police officer knew him, but no matter how hard he tried to remember, he couldn't recall where he had seen her before. Just as he was deep in thought, the police officer smiled gently and said, "Stop thinking about it. We've never met before. However, we both know Ni Ling; you're her friend, and she's my junior. She has your photo on her phone."
Oh! So that's the connection. But Fei Hu still couldn't understand and asked suspiciously, "How can you be so sure it's me just from a glance?"
The police officer smiled and replied, "You have an interesting story; of course, it's what Ni Ling told me. Although I've only seen your photo once, your story left a strong impression on me. So when I saw you tonight, I felt like I recognized you. When you mentioned your name, it all clicked; only Fei Hu could have such remarkable skills."
"Oh! I see! I'm really sorry; I just arrived in Shanghang yesterday and didn't expect to spend my first night at your police station," Fei Hu said with an embarrassed expression.
The police officer shook her head and said, "It's fine; it's all in the past. Tonight I'll treat you to dinner to help ease your nerves. Give me your phone number! You won't refuse, will you?"
Fei Hu hesitated for a moment before giving his phone number. He truly hadn't expected that Ni Ling had kept his photo on her phone.
