One night away from home was quite unusual for Chen Hui. After having breakfast with Fei Hu, she said her goodbyes and headed home, worried that her family would be concerned about her. During that brief meal, Chen Hui connected with several family members over the phone.
After returning to the hotel, Fei Hu collapsed onto the bed and slept soundly until after two in the afternoon, when he was awakened by a knock on the door. When he opened it, he found Wang Yun standing there. She wore a white short-sleeve top and denim shorts, exuding an irresistible youthful charm, especially with her long legs that made Fei Hu's heart race.
"What's wrong? Not going to let me in? You look like a fool," Wang Yun said as she pushed past Fei Hu and walked inside.
Fei Hu washed his face to freshen up a bit before boiling some water to brew tea for both of them. Seeing Fei Hu looking lethargic, Wang Yun laughed and said, "You're not usually like this! So what if you were questioned for a bit? It's no big deal. Back in school, I often got into fights and visited the police station more than once."
"How did you find out? Did Chen Hui tell you?" Fei Hu asked lightly while sipping his tea.
Wang Yun nodded and sighed, "Last night I went to Chen Hui's house and saw she hadn't returned. I thought you two were together again. Honestly, I was really worried about you. But then this morning, as soon as Chen Hui got home, she called me. When I went to her place, I learned that you spent the night at the police station. Your luck is really bad; you keep running into these situations. At least you're okay."
"Is Chen Hui feeling very upset? She might hate me a little; it's my fault for not being clear last time and leaving her with some false hope. Thankfully, I told her the truth yesterday. It's because she was unhappy that she ran off, leading to all this trouble. But it's better this way; knowing earlier would have been a relief," Fei Hu said with a bittersweet smile, unsure of what he was smiling about.
Wang Yun leaned against Fei Hu and chuckled, "It's all good; she sent me to check on you because she has to go back home today to see her grandmother. I think she's in a decent mood; she seemed fine when I saw her. Who knows what she's thinking? Just make sure you handle this well," Wang Yun added playfully poking Fei Hu's nose with her finger, causing both of them to burst into laughter.
To avoid further complications, they decided not to go out again and stayed in the room chatting about light topics. Just after five o'clock, an unfamiliar phone number called in. After hesitating for a moment, Fei Hu answered it. It turned out to be the female police officer inviting him out for dinner and mentioning the reservation she had made.
After hanging up, Fei Hu pondered briefly before telling Wang Yun, "Someone invited me to dinner tonight; let's go together!"
"Oh! Is it a guy or a girl? With your charm, I'm not sure if I should join," Wang Yun teased with a mischievous grin.
Fei Hu raised his voice slightly and exclaimed, "It's a female police officer! She's really beautiful—tall with big eyes; she's stunning!"
"I won't go. I'll wait for you here. If you need the room, I'll just go home and won't disturb you. This is my principle in life. I will make sure you feel comfortable everywhere, without any pressure," Wang Yun said, chuckling lightly.
Fei Hu shot her a glare and explained the situation to Wang Yun. After listening, Wang Yun nodded. She believed what Fei Hu said was true, but she still replied, "In that case, I definitely can't go. You should go by yourself! Besides, given our relationship, we shouldn't be seen in public together. But thank you anyway."
Seeing that Wang Yun really didn't want to go, Fei Hu decided not to press her further. He left the hotel alone and took a taxi straight to Sea Cloud Pavilion. The night in Shanghang was no less vibrant than that in City A; the streets were bustling with traffic and crowds, and the flickering neon lights sparked endless imagination.
Room 108 on the 12th floor—what a treat! Eating dinner on such a high floor was quite an experience. Under the guidance of the hostess, Fei Hu pushed open the door to Room 108. If it weren't for a female police officer giving him a heads-up earlier, he would have thought he had gone to the wrong place.
The girl who had changed out of her uniform looked entirely different—wearing a white shirt and white pants that accentuated her fair skin even more. Coupled with her beautiful features, Fei Hu found her extremely attractive.
"Please have a seat; my name is An Min. I forgot to introduce myself," the girl said with a sweet smile.
Fei Hu carefully sat down across from her and looked up at the smiling An Min, saying, "It's fine; we can just have a casual meal. No need for such a grand occasion."
"It's nothing; I'm just being a good host. Besides, Sister Ni Ling has spoken very highly of you. If I don't treat you well, she'll scold me," An Min replied as she began to order dishes.
Fei Hu kept wondering when Ni Ling had taken his photo and stored it on her phone for her junior to see. This couldn't be allowed; he needed to ask her about it next time they met since it was an issue of portrait rights. The thought made him chuckle silently.
After An Min ordered the dishes and let Fei Hu take a look at the menu, she poured them both a cup of tea and smiled again, saying, "I'm really sorry about what happened last night; it's truly an embarrassment for our police force. When you return to City A, please don't mention this to Sister Ni Ling; otherwise, she'll be furious."
Wasn't this incident already over? Why was it still considered an embarrassment for the police force? Fei Hu was puzzled and smiled lightly as he asked, "How is this an embarrassment for your police force? I really can't understand; could you explain what exactly is embarrassing?"
An Min waited until the waiter had brought all the dishes before telling him, "Please close the door when you leave; sometimes I might come out looking for you." The waiter politely exited and closed the door behind him.
"The officer who interrogated you last night is an old cop with a very complicated relationship with Shrimp Ball. Several issues have gone wrong because of him. Originally, it was supposed to be the chief who would interrogate you, but he barged in and took over, which made the chief very uncomfortable. Unexpectedly, this guy acted rashly and hastily concluded your case without proper investigation. However, one of the girls who came with you has connections; one phone call to the bureau led to the chief personally ordering a thorough investigation into this matter. As a result, this guy exposed himself when he went to the hospital trying to change his testimony but was caught by our people—he's really reached the end of his rope," An Min said while signaling Fei Hu to start eating.
No wonder this guy has such an attitude towards Fei Hu; it turns out there’s something going on here. Chen Hui really can’t see it; she helped Fei Hu with such a big favor without showing any signs. This girl is truly different.
Just as Fei Hu and An Min were eating and chatting, the restaurant door suddenly swung open, and Ni Ling appeared in front of Fei Hu like a gust of wind. She was all smiles, repeatedly saying, "I’m late, I’m late! You guys are really something, just starting to eat without waiting for me." Ni Ling ignored the dazed Fei Hu and sat down at the seat opposite him. It was then that Fei Hu noticed there were three sets of utensils on the table; it seemed they had planned this.
Fei Hu put down his chopsticks, tapped the table with his hand, and shouted at the ravenous Ni Ling, "Hey! What’s going on? Are you trying to give me a surprise? But let me tell you, I’m not surprised; I’m just a bit angry." As he spoke, Fei Hu pretended to be angry and turned his head away.
"Come on! You’re a big man; can’t you take a joke? Don’t be so petty. Turn your face back around! If you keep ignoring me like this, I might really leave, and then don’t say I’m rude!" Ni Ling said as she tugged at Fei Hu’s ear. He grimaced but finally turned his head back.
Fei Hu and Zeng Xin picked up their chopsticks and took a bite of food before asking, "What’s going on? You appeared out of nowhere like a ghost; someone timid would really be scared to death by you."
"Last night, An Min told me you were in Shanghang. I didn’t quite believe it, so I called Yingzi to confirm, and it turned out to be true. Just so happened I had some business to attend to in Shanghang, so I asked An Min to arrange a meal for us all together; that’s all," Ni Ling said before diving back into her food as if she hadn’t eaten all day.
An Min glanced at Ni Ling's messy appearance and laughed heartily, "Sister Ni! You can’t do this; clearly, I’m treating you, yet you insist on saying it was your arrangement. How am I supposed to explain this to Fei Hu? Really, you didn’t even give him a chance to show off."
"Hey! Stop right there! What do you want him to show off about? His girlfriend is plenty; even if there isn’t one now, there will be one soon enough. So just give up on that thought early and focus on your work! In the future, I’ll introduce you to a handsome guy from City A—either rich or powerful; how about that?" Ni Ling said while eating and laughing.
An Min pouted slightly and whispered, "Not interested. You’re still single yourself; how can you have the nerve to say you'll introduce me? Get yourself married first before talking about me; no way am I getting delayed by you." An Min said as she couldn’t help but laugh.
"Hey! Look at you growing up! Daring to talk back to your sister like that. Fei Hu, look at her; she hasn’t matured at all—just thinking about finding a boyfriend while staying in the police station without any progress. It’s really disappointing considering your good diploma," Ni Ling said while poking An Min's forehead.
Fei Hu chuckled and said, "No way! She’s very pretty." Upon hearing this, Ni Ling shot Fei Hu a fierce glare.
