A thrilling battle ended in an instant. Fei Hu returned to the hotel, exhausted. He didn't even take a shower and collapsed into bed fully clothed. Understanding Wang Yun quietly pulled the door shut and left.
When Fei Hu woke up, he noticed the sun had once again crept in through the curtains. It dawned on him that he had slept through the entire night. Stretching and yawning, he felt much better. As he sat up, he remembered that Wang Yun had been there last night. Where was she? He felt puzzled by her absence.
Suddenly, his phone rang. It was Ni Ling calling. He quickly answered, "Hello, Ni Ling! What’s up?"
"Is that how you talk? Can't I call you if there's nothing going on? Anyway, come to Shanghang Second Hospital for a bit. I want to chat with you before I head back to City A this afternoon. Plus, An Min is injured; don't you want to see her? She's been so concerned about you," Ni Ling said playfully over the phone.
He felt a bit dazed; An Min was injured, so he should definitely go see her. Feeling somewhat embarrassed, Fei Hu hung up and hurried out of the hotel, hailing a taxi straight to the hospital entrance. A few dozen meters away from the hospital, he got out and bought some fruit for Fang Min. He couldn't just show up empty-handed!
Being a police officer made a difference; perhaps due to frequent fights, their bodies recovered faster than average people. Fei Hu gently pushed open Fang Min's single patient room and immediately saw her laughing and joking with Ni Ling. If it weren't for the bandage on her arm, no one would have guessed that such a lively girl could be injured.
"Hey! Looking good! You even thought to buy fruit, but you should have bought more varieties because I love fruit, though I'm afraid of buying it," Ni Ling joked as she approached and took the bag of fruit from Fei Hu's hands before heading into the bathroom. This woman was quite practical; it seemed he really needed to eat.
Fang Min smiled at Fei Hu and said, "Why are you being so polite? Why buy so much fruit? I'm only staying here for a day or two before I can be discharged." She looked genuinely happy when she said this.
"Come on, it's just a few pieces of fruit! How's your injury? Did you hurt any tendons or bones?" Fei Hu asked as he sat down on the chair beside Fang Min's bed.
Fang Min smiled slightly and replied, "Nope, just a cut; it only hurt my skin. Everything else is fine. But it was worth it; our department has been trying to catch that Shrimp Ball in action. What happened last night helped me contribute a bit to the department, so don’t worry about it. Just earlier, the director came to check on me personally." Fang Min spoke very casually, which eased Fei Hu's mind a bit.
After a while, Ni Ling returned with the washed fruit and placed it on the bedside table. She handed one to An Min and started eating one herself. Noticing that Ni Ling hadn't offered any fruit to Fei Hu, An Min felt a bit embarrassed and nudged Ni Ling playfully, saying, "Sister, why are you acting like this? Always showing your flaws."
"Hey! It's fine! You don't know; men generally don't like eating fruit—Fei Hu is no exception. If he says he likes it, he's lying," Ni Ling said while gesturing at Fei Hu before getting up and walking out of the room.
Fei Hu waved at An Min before quickly following after Ni Ling. Once in the hospital corridor, Ni Ling sat down and wiped her mouth with a smile, saying, "Don't laugh at me; this is just how I am—get used to it!" She smiled and gestured for Fei Hu to sit beside her.
"What's wrong? You're leaving this afternoon. Why not stay a few more days? I don't have anything to do right now, so I can keep you company," Fei Hu said with a smile at Ni Ling.
Ni Ling's expression turned serious as she replied, "Don't act like everything is fine. It's easy to become lazy that way. You need to find a job first. Whether you make money or not is secondary; the key is to stabilize yourself. Otherwise, if you just wander around every day, it's easy to get into trouble. I don't know what you're thinking." As she spoke, Ni Ling fixed her gaze intently on Fei Hu's face.
"Yeah! I think the same way. Starting tomorrow, I'll look for a job," Fei Hu said, contemplating which KTV boss he should approach. The last time he was about to leave, that female boss personally came to invite him and even offered a high price for him to be her bodyguard, but he had declined at the time. However, his situation was different now; he was essentially homeless.
Noticing Fei Hu's distracted demeanor, Ni Ling asked with some annoyance, "What are you thinking about? Don't you think there are too many girls around you? Don't play around; you can't please two dogs with one bone. You'll regret it later." She shot him a disapproving glance.
Fei Hu smiled slightly and said, "What are you talking about? You're making me sound like a rogue."
"Do you think you're that great? Compared to a rogue, you're just a little more civilized," Ni Ling replied coldly, which made Fei Hu uncomfortable. Things had been fine just a moment ago; how did it change so quickly? He slowly began to understand the meaning of the saying that a woman's heart is as deep as the ocean.
Fei Hu paused for a moment and asked with a smile, "What's going on with you? Your emotions are all over the place, as if I've offended you."
Ni Ling sighed and shook her head in frustration. "You really are hard to understand. Are you handsome? Not really. I don't know why you attract so many women, and they're all quite good girls—like Yingzi, Sun Li, and that Ye Xiaofei of yours. Are those women not better than you? Last time when you got into trouble, you still had women around you. You went from A City to Shanghai just because of a woman and ended up fighting with someone else. The commotion last night was quite loud! It even alarmed the Shanghai Police Station."
Ni Ling's words were all too reasonable, causing Fei Hu to lower his head in reflection. He needed to seriously reconsider his actions; if this continued, one day he would end up at the mercy of women. But he only knew women, which made Fei Hu feel extremely troubled.
"Alright, as friends, I'm just reminding you that some things require careful consideration. Think more about yourself. I have work to do and can't waste too much time here. Say hello to An Min for me and then head back! Call me if anything comes up," Ni Ling said as she patted Fei Hu on the shoulder and turned towards the door.
This woman is really a workaholic; she didn't even say goodbye to her junior before leaving. Fei Hu shook his head helplessly and turned back to the hospital room.
When Fei Hu told An Min that Ni Ling had left, her expression remained unchanged. It seemed she had grown accustomed to Ni Ling's behavior. After chatting for a while, Fei Hu stood up to take his leave.
When he returned to the hotel lobby on the first floor, he saw Wang Yun and Chen Hui sitting together chatting. As soon as they spotted Fei Hu, they approached him eagerly. Fei Hu quickly asked, "Have you been waiting long? Why didn't you call?"
"No, we just arrived. If you hadn't come back soon, I would have definitely called you," Chen Hui replied with a smile, while Wang Yun appeared calm and unreadable, unable to express her joy or sorrow.
As soon as the three of them returned to the room, Chen Hui placed the bag in her hand on the coffee table and calmly asked, "Where have you been? We thought you were taking a long nap, but the front desk said you left this morning."
Fei Hu boiled some water and brewed tea for the three of them. After taking a deep breath, he recounted the events from the night before when Shrimp Ball had brought people to extort them. Chen Hui and Wang Yun listened with wide eyes, and for a long time, no one spoke.
After a while, Chen Hui finally sighed and said, "This is all my fault. If it weren't for my stubbornness, this wouldn't have happened. But it's also good; you've rid the Shanghang people of a menace. He won't be getting out for at least three to five years. This person has a criminal record, so it was only a matter of time before he got dealt with. You aren't mad at me for this, are you?"
"It's all in the past; there's no point in being angry. Luckily, the two people we were with last night were police officers. If it had been someone else, it could have been quite troublesome," Fei Hu recalled the bloody scene from last night and still felt a bit shaken.
Wang Yun, who had been silent until now, smiled and said, "It's good that everything is fine. It's fortunate that it was you who encountered this situation; if it had been someone else, they would have been in serious trouble. We live here and really had no idea such people existed."
"Hey! We only come into the city occasionally. We spend most of our time outside. If we lived here all the time, we would have a better understanding of what it's like," Chen Hui said softly.
Wang Yun stood up and angrily remarked, "I just don't understand what these police officers are doing, allowing such people to run rampant. If I were a police officer, I would arrest them one by one and see who would dare to act recklessly."
Fei Hu chuckled as he listened and Chen Hui asked in confusion, "What are you laughing at? Is Wang Yun wrong?"
"This kind of thing exists everywhere—Shanghang, City A, even abroad. There will always be such people. The police force is limited, so they leave some space for these individuals to exist. Of course, they don't act recklessly every day; it's occasional. Many things happen without anyone knowing. If they were blatant about it, they would have been dealt with long ago, especially those small-time thugs," Fei Hu explained while pouring water for them.
Chen Hui glanced at her watch and said, "Alright! I won't chat with you any longer; I need to go. I'll come back to find you in a week. For these days, just stay put and behave; otherwise, you'll end up looking for trouble out of boredom."
"Are you going to work?" Fei Hu was surprised that Chen Hui was leaving right after arriving.
