I waited anxiously, but White Soul showed no signs of waking up. I dared not get too close to him, yet I couldn't walk away either, pacing back and forth repeatedly.
From time to time, a few Undead would come over, only to leave without making a sound. I couldn't make sense of the current situation; all I could do was hope that White Soul would wake up soon.
Every second spent by his side was excruciating. If I could leave this place, White Soul would undoubtedly remain a profound presence in my future memories.
But could I really leave?
At least there was still hope for White Soul.
If he woke up and saw me in this ghastly state, would he despise me? Would everyone else?
Fortunately, I still had my thoughts intact and could control the hunger that threatened to overwhelm my sanity. I forced a bitter smile, half-leaning in the air, looking down at White Soul.
...
I lost track of how long I maintained this position; White Soul remained motionless. The Undead came and went countless times.
I floated down beside White Soul, my feet touching the ground—these feet had forgotten what it felt like to walk.
A few more Undead approached, but I didn't let them leave. Grabbing one of them, I spoke up.
“Hess, I see Hess.”
I didn't care whether the Undead could understand me; I kept repeating it. Intuitively, I felt that Hess would be able to explain our current situation—he seemed like the leader of the Undead. But honestly, I had no idea if the Undead even had a leader.
I effortlessly lifted White Soul and followed those Undead in search of Hess. Along the way, the Undead greedily eyed White Soul, their mouths dripping with repulsive liquid.
I fought back the urge to vomit; I desperately wanted to leave this place.
We walked into a cave, nothing special; all the caves here looked almost the same.
"Can you see me?" Hess said, sitting in a corner.
"Tell me, what happened?" I asked.
"You died and joined our ranks of Undead," Hess explained simply.
I knew I was truly dead, but hearing it from someone else still felt unsettling.
"What about him?" I pointed to the White Soul beside me.
Hess frowned, as if it was hard to explain. "Not dead, but close to it."
"No, I won't let you harm him!" I remained firm in my stance.
"You can't hold out for long."
"Why? I can!"
"Soon, your will will fade, you'll lose all your memories, and consuming him will be your nature," Hess said. It seemed that speaking so much at once was clearly taxing for him.
"No, I can't!" I absolutely refused to become like those Undead!
"Then how do you still have consciousness and the ability to speak?" I asked.
"I have to pay a price for this."
"What price? I'm willing to do anything!"
"Willing to do anything?"
"Yes, I want to save him, and one day I will leave."
Hess suddenly laughed, as if he had heard the greatest joke, his reaction overly dramatic.
"Leave? You can't leave; no one can."
"No, I'm different from you!"
"If you can move me, I might tell you a way."
"Move you?"
"Yes, Undead have no emotions, but if you can move me, I'll tell you."
"You are making it difficult for me!"
"Suit yourself."
"Hess, actually, you envy me, don't you?"
"What did you say?!"
"You envy me for having emotions."
...
"Alright, if you're willing to listen, I can tell you a very long story."
Hess looked like a stubborn old child, happily perking up his ears.
"Once upon a time, there was a human girl named Xi Meng..."
I don't know how many times I've recalled the past from the beginning until now. Each time, it's just me slowly reminiscing, but this time, speaking it out loud makes me suddenly feel that a lot has really happened.
Through the separations and reunions, everyone’s unwavering support. The regretful Flower Tears, the infatuated Mosang, the longing for warmth of Bai Li. In fact, everyone is the protagonist of their own story.
Hess listened intently, occasionally showing a few expressions. Next to him, Undead still wore that blank expression, seemingly unable to understand what I was saying.
“...So, she cannot give up; she cannot stop at this step.”
“Silver Moon is waiting for you.” Hess suddenly said.
I looked at him in confusion and then smiled, “Yes, he is still waiting for me!”
“Xi Meng, the path you choose will be very difficult.”
“I’ve always understood that.”
“Sigh, if you want to leave here, it’s not impossible.” Hess said.
“What? Really?” I asked excitedly.
“It is possible, but very difficult; hardly anyone can do it.”
“As long as you tell me, I'm not afraid!”
“Alright, if you want to leave here, you need to go to a certain place.”
“Where?”
“That place is not any easier to survive than here; even if you are Undead, you will still turn to ash.”
“Have you been there?”
"Yes, at that time I wanted to leave here, choosing the path of Reckless. Fortunately, I managed to escape back, and because of my training there, I can still retain my memories before death."
"At that time, with my cultivation level, I was indeed the weakest, but among this group of Undead, I was a strong one. So do you understand?"
"I know, I have to go!" Because there was no other choice.
"Sigh, since you've made your choice, I'll personally send you over later."
"Thank you, Hess."
"Once you get there, you'll realize that becoming Undead is actually quite fortunate."
"Can you take care of White Soul for me?"
"If you don't come back, we will immediately consume him. I keep my word; I have a relative perception of every Undead here."
"Thank you, I'll be back."
I don't know how long this chosen path will take, but I must continue on...
