"Who are you?" The boy regained consciousness, cautiously rising and floating in mid-air, looking at me.
"I'm no one. If I wanted to harm you, why would I save you?" I said impatiently. In truth, I had some selfish motives; after all, he was more familiar with this place than I was, and I could ask him questions later.
"Why are you here?" the boy continued to inquire.
"I want to leave this place. Someone is waiting for me."
"The hope of leaving is very slim."
"Then I'll still give it a try. I don't want to be Undead."
The boy landed and stood in front of me, tilting his head as he asked, "What's your name?"
"Xi Meng."
"I'm Hanako. Let's stick together from now on."
Although that was my plan, Hanako's straightforwardness made me wonder if there was some kind of scheme behind it. Could I really trust him so easily right after arriving here?
"Suit yourself. I'm much more familiar with this place than you are," Hanako seemed to sense my hesitation.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
"I want to repay a debt; I owe her a promise." Hanako's big eyes looked somewhat sorrowful.
We all have our own stories, but we aren't close enough to share them yet. However, someone who knows how to repay a debt shouldn't be too bad, and besides, I don't have better options.
"Deal."
"Hanako, explain the situation here."
Hanako was like a Squirrel, always jumping around, especially with his long and thick tail. I suspected he was actually a Mouse Demon...
"This is our first stop for cultivation. You won't leave here unless you reach Star-Rated."
"How do I reach Star-Rated?"
"That's almost an impossible task, but I think, maybe for you, there's a chance!"
"What do you mean?"
"There's a waterfall a thousand meters from here. As long as you get through it, you'll pass."
"It can't be that simple, right?" I didn't believe it.
"Of course not. That waterfall isn't water; it's the flames that fell just now."
"What?!" Just from that last attack, Pure Sound was almost at its limit. If a whole waterfall of flames came crashing down, there would be no way to escape.
"Here, a gust of wind blows every five hours or so. The flames that just floated in were carried by that wind, and each time, depending on the direction, there's only one blind spot."
"But hiding all the time isn't a solution."
"True, but there are no other options. This is Purgatory, where Undead can appear at any moment."
"They all want to leave here?"
"Of course, no one wants to become Undead, even if there's a one in a billion chance."
"Hanako, do you think anyone has ever succeeded?"
"As far as I know—everyone has perished."
...
"There is still one way," Hanako said again.
"What way?"
"Escape back. Although the hope of escaping back is slim, it's at least more practical than leaving here."
"Escape? I absolutely refuse! Why don't you escape?" Hess escaped back; I don't want that. I must leave.
"Sigh, even if it means death, I have to give it a shot," Hanako said helplessly.
"We must have a chance to escape."
"Well, let's think of a way first. By the way, how did you manage to get away?"
I hesitated for a moment, but then thought, since we are both Undead now, what is there to be afraid of? Hanako and I get along well, and I would need her support in the future, so there was nothing I couldn't say.
"It's a Divine Artifact; I have Divine Power within me."
"Heavens, how could you die then?"
"Sigh, it's a long story."
"Don't worry, I believe you can do it. You're different from us."
"Hanako."
"Yes?"
"If we can escape, I will take you with me. I promise I won't go back on my word."
"Yes, I trust you."
