Xiaomin's ice finally melted, and she turned around angrily, striking at the pale face of the Zombie.
However, if this Level Four Zombie were to be hit by a Zombie that was not even at Third Level, then he wouldn't need to continue being the Zombie King. He casually raised his left hand, seemingly indifferent, but in reality, his speed was incredibly fast; his index finger stopped Xiaomin's fist effortlessly.
Even so, he was slightly surprised. This was the first time he had shown such an expression, and it was also the first time he encountered a Zombie that ignored his oppressive aura. However, within less than a second, he returned to his cold expression.
He thought to himself, "His mental pressure over Zombies is absolute; even Zombies controlled by other Zombies would instinctively fear him! Thus, they have no choice but to obey him."
His gaze deepened as all his aura poured out, scaring Xiaomin so much that she almost knelt down. But she heard his thoughts and knew he was testing her. So she held on, her eyes wide open, continuously exclaiming that she had to save her master! Otherwise, she would keep running away!
The Zombie watched her for a while and surprisingly nodded in agreement. Looking at Xiaomin, who seemed as if she had been injected with adrenaline, he began to wonder what kind of Zombie her master was that could make her so devoted.
"Ding ding ding."
Wei Yuan's Bluetooth headset rang again. He took off his gloves and touched the headset. After a moment, a familiar female computer voice came through.
"Report: The zombie tide has reached within 20 kilometers of the base. It will arrive in 4 hours at the fastest and 7 hours at the slowest. Are you still not going to notify the military for defense?"
Wei Yuan stretched lazily and said in a relaxed tone, "No need to prepare; stop bothering me!"
As a result, the light on the headset turned green again.
He yawned, put on his gloves, picked up the Test Tube he had just set down, and observed it carefully under the light before comparing it with another Test Tube.
He noticed that the liquids in both Test Tubes were almost identical; both were blood. However, one was completely black. Even when the Test Tube was slightly shaken, it hardly moved, casting only a dark shadow under the light. The other one also appeared black but had a lower viscosity than the previous Test Tube and shimmered with red glints under the light.
Furrowing his brow, he placed both Test Tubes back in their original spots and returned to observe through the electronic microscope.
He continuously adjusted the magnification until it reached its maximum and began writing formulas on a whiteboard that was 4 meters long and 2 meters wide. To his surprise, after densely filling one whiteboard with several formulas, they all yielded the same result.
After an unknown amount of time calculating, he kicked the whiteboard away and squatted on the ground, ruffling his already messy hair into a nest.
He scratched his scalp repeatedly, unable to comprehend why the viral structure itself was identical yet there were differences in blood states. Moreover, Liu You'er's viral content in her blood was higher than that of this Zombie! Logically speaking, her blood should be more viscous! Where exactly was the error?!
"Bang bang bang."
The door was knocked, interrupting Wei Yuan's frantic actions. He stood up, tidied his clothes and hair, took a deep breath to calm himself, and then went to open the door.
The female assistant lowered her head. When she saw the door open, she let out a sigh of relief. However, as soon as she looked up, she was met with Wei Yuan's cold expression. A flash of fear crossed her eyes, but she suppressed her trembling voice and looked directly at Wei Yuan. Speaking quickly yet calmly, she said, "The mobile control machine has been completed. When will we move the experimental subject?"
As Wei Yuan's longest-serving assistant, she knew well that he despised people who were overly submissive. Although he appeared to enjoy it, he actually looked down on them in his heart! Therefore, as long as she didn't make mistakes and maintained a balanced attitude, he wouldn't grow to dislike her too quickly! She also had a chance to escape from him!
Sure enough, Wei Yuan did not pursue the matter further. His expression returned to normal as he raised his hand to check the time. Noticing that three hours had passed, he said, "Have A Researcher take charge. Once the experimental subject is placed on the control machine, transport it to the outer wall of the base and stand guard by its side, following my orders."
The female assistant showed a hint of confusion but did not ask further. She simply replied with an "Understood" and went off to relay the orders.
After Wei Yuan finished packing his things and changed his clothes, he leisurely walked to the studio where the researcher was located.
At this moment, A Researcher had already secured Liu You'er onto the control machine. The so-called securing involved binding her to the machine with a special material that was as hard as chrome and as flexible as gold.
The mobile control machine was merely an upright device with a flat iron plate on its surface. It measured two meters in length and one meter in width, just enough to hold Liu You'er in place. The back of the machine was densely packed with wires, and there were two tempered glass cubes on either side filled with green liquid that was slowly flowing into Liu You'er's body through soft tubes. Due to time constraints, they couldn't care less about the machine's appearance.
Wei Yuan frowned as he examined the machine for a while before reluctantly nodding in approval.
Jia Shibing leaned against the wall with a gun in hand, a cigarette dangling from his lips that he was reluctant to light. Looking at the desolate road ahead, he couldn't help but sigh. It had been over two months since the apocalypse began, and fewer people were coming to seek refuge at the base. At first, it was overcrowded with people; there were even mutated individuals at the base gates that cost many soldiers their lives. But now...
With the decrease in survivors, there was little benefit for him; he hadn't smoked in nearly two weeks! It was simply unbearable!
Yi Shibing watched Jia Shibing's lazy demeanor with a frown. He had always disapproved of Jia Shibing's habit of shortchanging newcomers. Seeing him slacking off now only made him angrier. He slapped Jia Shibing on the shoulder and said, "How can you be so lazy on watch? What if there's a Zombie Tide? How will you defend the base?"
Jia Shibing felt anger rise within him after Yi Shibing's slap.
He had long been annoyed by Yi Shibing's self-righteous attitude ever since Li Lei started favoring him. Now being slapped for no reason only fueled his rage; he turned around and threw a punch at Yi Shibing. Seeing blood trickle from Yi Shibing's mouth, he cursed fiercely, "Look at you all day acting high and mighty! Just know how to flatter those in charge! Do you think I'm afraid of you? Come on! If you want to fight, I'm ready! I'll beat you up!"
Upon hearing this, Yi Shibing immediately charged forward and started wrestling with Jia Shibing. The nearby soldiers and Ding Shibing rushed over to break them apart, spending considerable effort before finally separating the two bruised fighters.
However, one soldier got distracted for a moment, and they started fighting again. Ding Shibing shouted angrily, "What are you doing? Hold on!"
The soldier didn't respond or move for two seconds before saying gravely, "Haven't you noticed that the stench in the air is getting stronger?"
Upon hearing this, both Jia Shibing and Yi Shibing froze mid-action and exchanged worried glances before quickly releasing each other. Ding Shibing had already dashed up to the wall upon hearing those words and used binoculars to observe the distance. Suddenly feeling weak in his legs, he shouted into his communicator: "Zombie Tide! Zombie Tide has appeared two kilometers outside the base! Requesting support!!!"
In the command room, Li Lei was startled by Ding Shibing's words and exclaimed in shock: "How is this possible? There are detectors outside the base; there should have been an alarm if the Zombie Tide was within fifty kilometers! How could it be discovered so close? What have you all been doing?!"
Ding Shibing's voice trembled as he said, "I... I don't know... there's no sound..."
Li Lei's face turned red with anger as he hurriedly asked, "Approximately how many?"
Ding Shibing looked through the telescope again and replied, "About... over ten thousand, but there are many mutated Zombies in there!"
Li Lei's expression grew heavy as he forced himself to calm down, thinking, "The base has only a little over ten thousand soldiers. Although there are less than two thousand Ability Users, with firearms, we still have a chance to win! However, I'm afraid of attracting more Zombies, and even if the base wins this battle, it will likely be left in ruins!"
He slumped down in his chair. Just then, the phone rang again. Thinking there was another emergency, he hurriedly answered without checking the number. Upon hearing Wei Yuan's voice, he became even angrier and shouted, "How is your research institute handling things! Why didn't you remind us to prepare defenses? The Zombie Tide is approaching; can you take responsibility for this?"
Wei Yuan listened quietly to Li Lei's words before slowly responding, "Don't worry, I have a plan. The secret weapon is almost at the city wall and will definitely repel the tide of corpses."
Li Lei was so furious he could barely speak; it seemed Wei Yuan had known all along and deliberately concealed it!
He took a deep breath and gritted his teeth as he said, "Just wait! I will inform the Commander!"
"Ha~ whatever."
"Bang!"
Li Lei smashed the phone with his fist. Then he composed himself and grabbed the walkie-talkie to arrange defenses before rushing to the city wall. However, he discovered that the secret weapon was an unconscious Zombie. Furious, he nearly killed a Researcher, but at that moment, the Zombie Tide had already come into view, leaving him with no choice...
