In the alley, a boy around twelve or thirteen years old was being bullied by four or five boys of the same age. He often encountered such situations and had long since gotten used to it; as long as he curled up his body and tightly hugged his head, it would all be over in a while.
As for telling teachers or parents? Ha! What could that do? It would only lead to harsher retaliation in the end. Of course, he occasionally hoped... hoped that someone would come to help him, but...
Through the gaps between his arms, he could clearly see one classmate after another passing by his line of sight. They saw him but directly ignored him, continuing to joke with those around them.
He heard a boy with a streak of dyed yellow hair and a lip piercing kicking him while cursing, "You just sit there acting all high and mighty every day. I asked you for answers, but you wouldn't give them to me, causing me to fail and get scolded. Are you enjoying this? Today, I'm going to give you a lesson from my 'Little Sunflower Dad' class to teach you a lesson!"
However, after a while, seeing that the boy beneath him did not resist or plead for mercy only made the yellow-haired boy angrier. His expression began to twist as he kicked harder, venting all the teacher's scoldings and parental beatings onto the boy. He thought viciously, "Anyway, he's an orphan with no one to care for him. His tuition and living expenses can only rely on poverty assistance and scholarships. How dare he not listen to me! This time, I must scare him!"
Suddenly, he was kicked hard from behind. Caught off guard, he fell to the ground, startling his buddies who were bullying alongside him, causing them to turn their heads in unison.
There stood a girl about fifteen or sixteen years old with a ponytail, fair skin, and cat-like eyes quietly watching them. Although she couldn't be called a stunning beauty, her cold demeanor seemed to draw attention like a whirlpool.
Her deep blue pleated skirt and light blue fitted shirt with lace edges perfectly showcased her long legs and slender figure. She wore white shoes that added a touch of cuteness.
Seeing her outfit made them hesitate because she was wearing the uniform of B City High School! It was well-known that B City High School was prestigious; its students were either academically exceptional or from wealthy families. Of course, some students possessed both qualities.
They remembered how their senior had bullied a student from B City High School only to find out later that the student's father was a high-ranking official. After that incident, their senior was expelled and they never saw him again; they heard his family had moved away from B City.
But the yellow-haired boy didn't care about any of that; he only knew he had been knocked down by a girl who looked incredibly weak! Not only that! He had been knocked down in front of his buddies and the boy he was bullying! He felt utterly humiliated!
Fuming with anger, he got up and walked in front of the girl, glaring at her with an intimidating expression as he said, "What’s your problem? Why are you meddling in things that have nothing to do with you? And how dare you kick me!"
The yellow-haired boy usually wouldn’t hit girls, but generally speaking, girls avoided him altogether. No one dared approach him when he was angry. To his surprise, this girl didn’t even look at him; she walked straight over to the boy and said calmly, "Are you okay? Can you get up?"
The boy looked up at her and smiled as he replied, "Don't worry about me; we don't know each other. It's not worth getting involved with people like them~ Besides, I'm used to it. Thank you!"
The girl looked at the boy's sunny smile and found it exceptionally glaring. Observing the numerous old and new scars on his body made her wonder why this boy could still have such a warm smile despite being surrounded by darkness?!
The yellow-haired boy was already unhappy and even more so when the girl ignored him! He raised his right hand to pat her left shoulder, preparing to make her turn around so she would listen to him properly.
Who knew that when the girl pulled her right hand forward, she was caught off guard and instantly yanked over. Then, with a strong bend at the waist, she threw him in a perfect back throw, and he landed on the ground, too pained to even get up.
She could only watch helplessly as the girl helped the boy up and took him away without any obstruction.
Her Buddy just stared blankly, not stopping anything. That would have been fine, but could someone at least help her up from this dirty ground?
Outside the alley, once the boy was out of sight of those people, he immediately shook off the girl who had almost caused him to fall and shot her a resentful glance.
The girl felt goosebumps from his stare and explained, "I'm not used to being too close to others. I was just helping you out."
The boy was taken aback and curiously said, "You don't seem like someone who would..."
He noticed the girl's gaze slowly turning towards him, and he quickly swallowed his words, saying, "Not someone who meddles in others' affairs."
Although the girl's expression remained calm, for some reason, he felt a strong sense of threat from her just now.
Upon hearing his words, the girl seemed somewhat satisfied but still maintained her indifferent demeanor as she looked at him and said, "Liu Yecheng, do you remember?"
Even though her tone was still cold and seemingly impervious, the boy could deeply sense the intense helplessness and sadness radiating from her.
"What are you thinking about?"
The boy noticed the girl's hands moving up and down in front of him and realized he had spaced out. Embarrassed, he said, "Sorry, I zoned out. What did you say? I didn't catch that."
The girl rolled her eyes internally, unable to understand why her self-proclaimed genius brother would hang out with someone who seemed a bit slow-witted.
She sighed silently and repeated, "Liu Yecheng! Do you remember?"
"Oh oh~ Of course! We are best friends. In the national math competition, we both got second place. Hahaha~"
The girl looked at the boy in front of her who was a head shorter and just got beaten up but was still in a good mood talking about getting second place. Compared to her brother who had thrown a fit over using his trophy as a flower pot for cacti, she felt she might have mistaken him for someone else.
She couldn't help but ask, "Are you really friends with my brother? You must be mistaken!"
She scrutinized the boy, and after receiving his affirmative answer, she turned away, feeling a deep sense of frustration as she gazed at the white clouds in the sky. After calming down for a moment, she turned back and asked with a hint of curiosity, "Why don't you just give him the answer? If you do, you won't have to get beaten up."
Upon hearing this question, the boy lowered his head in silence, lost in thought. When he looked up again, his eyes were clear and his expression serious as he said, "I have nothing to lose. If I get caught, even if I'm not expelled, my scholarship and financial aid will definitely be gone. Countless eyes are watching me, waiting for me to make a mistake. So there's no need to take risks for him; getting beaten up is nothing serious."
The girl widened her eyes slightly, seemingly surprised by the boy's words, and softly said, "It seems you're not stupid... you can endure quite a bit."
The boy was taken aback and exclaimed, "Where do I look stupid?! I clearly seem very smart!"
"..."
Well, it seems that birds of a feather flock together; I misjudged him.
She silently turned away, not intending to speak again, but then saw the boy limping towards her and asking, "Where's Liu Yecheng? I haven't seen him at the B City library lately. We agreed to solve math problems together once a week!"
The girl paused for a moment before coldly replying, "He’s dead."
The boy's eyes widened in disbelief, his heart aching as time seemed to freeze at that moment. It wasn't until he heard a car horn from the roadside that he snapped back to reality. He wanted to ask something more, but the girl had already left.
Tears welled up in the boy's eyes as he murmured, "Are you... Liu You'er?"
