"Another one!"
Liu You'er looked at the scene in front of her with some surprise.
This was a small village, with only a few thousand residents. Most of the houses were single-story, and the most upscale ones were two-story buildings built by the families themselves.
Although there were no strong defenses, as long as one could escape the village during the early stages of the apocalypse and reach some bases, it was still possible to survive even without abilities.
However, if one waited until the zombies evolved to Level Two before fleeing, the chances would be slim. By the time they reached Level Three, with this number of zombies, it would be tantamount to a death sentence.
From the number of zombie corpses on the ground, it was evident that very few people had escaped from the village.
Indeed, this village was not a human base but one that had long been overrun by zombies. Logically speaking, zombies should not attack their own kind unless they were of a different level, but here...
Limbs were scattered everywhere, and thick black blood emitted a foul odor as it mingled with the air. Each zombie wore a vacant expression, and the only commonality was that there were almost no intact bodies.
"What kind of attacker is this? A lightning-type mutant... or a zombie?"
Zhao Ling looked at the horrific scene in front of her with a serious expression. Some zombies had their intestines hanging from rooftops, others had severed limbs with bite marks on them, and some had their heads crushed into bloody mush.
After a while, she approached a relatively intact corpse and began to examine it closely without showing any disgust, even using her hands to turn over the body.
This behavior made Liu You'er reconsider her impression of Zhao Ling. She had initially thought Zhao Ling was just a sheltered flower but was surprised to see her so serious.
Xuan Mo, on the other hand, showed little interest and sat on the rooftop enjoying the view...
If this scene could even be called a view.
After an unknown amount of time, Zhao Ling stood up and walked over to Liu You'er, her complexion looking quite poor.
Seeing her like this, Liu You'er immediately stepped aside, covering her nose, and then
"Ugh."
Zhao Ling leaned against a tree and began to vomit violently. Noticing that Liu You'er had moved so far away and didn't come to help her, she cursed her for being "heartless" before starting to vomit again. It took about five more minutes before she felt slightly better.
Tsk tsk tsk, not handsome for more than three seconds, Liu You'er thought without any sympathy.
Fortunately, Zhao Ling couldn't read minds; otherwise, she would be furious. Now feeling a bit more comfortable, she began to analyze seriously.
"It seems that the attacker who assaulted that base yesterday is the same one who attacked these Zombies. The methods and techniques are identical. But strangely, the Core wasn't taken; it seems like they simply enjoyed the thrill of killing."
Liu You'er had never studied corpse identification or anything like that, but just a glance was enough to tell how brutal the attacker was.
"Hey, let's go. These Zombies look like they've been dead for less than two hours. If we move quickly, we might catch him or her."
"Still going further away?"
Liu You'er looked at Xuan Mo with some confusion. They were already over 700 kilometers from City A; if this attacker wasn't targeting City A, they wouldn't turn back now.
Moreover, it was almost certain that this was a High-Level Evolver, not a Zombie, so it was probably not their concern anymore.
Xuan Mo could tell what Liu You'er was thinking just by looking at her expression. He pretended to be heartbroken and dramatically clutched his chest as he began his exaggerated performance.
"You heartless woman! What if this beast goes to another human base? Can you bear to see those people killed so cruelly? You... (omitting ten thousand words)"
"Shut up!"
Liu You'er kicked him out of nowhere and stopped talking.
However, Xuan Mo's demeanor was truly out of place; how could she not know he had become so kind-hearted? With this thought, her expression darkened slightly, sensing a hint of conspiracy, and she probed.
"Are you feeling stimulated?"
Xuan Mo smiled mischievously.
"Nope~"
Her eyes hurt so much...
Liu You'er turned around again and silently said, "Xiao Hong, burn him."
Xiao Hong, who had been listlessly perched on her shoulder, immediately perked up upon hearing this and flew toward Xuan Mo with determination.
"Chirp chirp~ (So boring, finally something to play with!)"
Thus, the two began an intense battle at the edge of the dying Horde, with red flames and wind blades flying everywhere.
"Finally quieted down~ Huh?"
Liu You'er turned to look at Zhao Ling and found her gazing curiously at herself. When their eyes met, Zhao Ling quickly shifted her gaze away, looking a bit guilty.
"?"
Liu You'er found it strange but didn't ask further. She felt something was off, as if she had stepped into someone's trap, yet there was an inexplicable sense of familiarity...
In the evening, Liu You'er lay in bed, quietly reflecting on the events of the past few days. She no longer needed to sleep for long hours; half an hour was enough, and she could choose her own bedtime, which made things much more convenient.
"Whoosh—"
"Who is it?!"
A faint sound echoed, resembling Wind Sound, but Liu You'er heard clearly that it was the sound of fabric rubbing against the wall. Someone was outside the window.
"Hehe—"
A giggle, reminiscent of a child's mischievous triumph, rang out unusually clear in the quiet night. A small shadow flashed by the window. Although it moved quickly, Liu You'er still caught a glimpse and her mind went blank.
"Wei Yuan's Little Zombie!"
"Bang!"
Xuan Mo heard the noise and rushed over. However, upon opening Liu You'er's door, he found nothing but emptiness; both the person and the bird had vanished.
He frowned and tapped his ear stud.
"The plan has gone awry..."
---
Little Zombie ran while emitting cheerful, sharp laughter, as if playing hide and seek with Liu You'er, creating an eerie atmosphere in the stillness of the night.
Liu You'er sprinted behind him, thoughts racing through her mind one after another, but she was unwilling to believe it.
The terrain here is remote, with many trees. Little Zombie is small in stature and always weaves through the bushes and narrow tree branches. His agility makes him hard to catch, but after twenty minutes, Liu You'er finally managed to grab him.
"What are you doing here?"
Feeling Liu You'er's intense anger and murderous intent, Little Zombie shrank his neck a bit, his round eyes filled with mist, looking quite pitiful. However, Liu You'er knows him well.
"Stop pretending. How did you end up here? Don't tell me it's a coincidence."
Little Zombie tilted his head and thought for a moment, seemingly trying to understand Liu You'er's words. After a minute, he looked at her as if he had just realized something, saying "hee, joy, play" while pointing at his pocket.
"Play? Letter? Is it a letter?"
Liu You'er frowned and cautiously reached into his pocket, feeling something card-like. She slowly pulled it out, and the moment she saw the words on it, her pupils glowed red.
Taking advantage of Liu You'er's distraction, Little Zombie immediately escaped from her grasp. Liu You'er didn't bother to chase him because he no longer posed any threat to her.
"I miss you so much, 10845~"
"Boom~"
Liu You'er looked up at the firelight not far away. Her eyes glowed red as she quickly ran in that direction. No matter if it was a trap or not, as long as he was there, she would definitely kill him!
