"It seems that the Lanstor Foundation's research and development organization for robots is not as magical as advertised," Rek thought to himself.
Soon, a new girl arrived and took Rek to change into a white linen robe. "What happened to that cute, smoky robot girl?" Rek couldn't help but ask.
"----"
"Do you need help putting on the clothes, Young Master Rek, or will you do it yourself? The items you brought need to be temporarily stored here and cannot be taken into the Ancient Capital," the girl said softly, her eyes blinking at Rek.
"I'll do it myself!" Rek replied, eager to meet his ideal Moon Goddess without causing any trouble.
After changing clothes, Rek was guided by the girl to a metal door.
Rek pushed open the door and found himself inside a moving carriage, having entered through the back door. He tried to push open the back door again but nearly fell out; outside was just the dirt path marked by the wheels of the carriage and the scenery of mountains and forests. The previous metal corridor and main door had vanished.
Inside the carriage were already five people: a family of three with two adults and a little boy, and another couple. It seemed that all five were tourists, as the carriage swayed gently.
The little boy lifted the curtain of the carriage window to look outside at the lush green landscape, which was very beautiful.
Rek chose to sit in a corner of the carriage without speaking. It appeared that the Lanstor Foundation had mastered the technology of fixed-point spatial teleportation.
Although it seemed simple to step through one door and find himself in this moving carriage, such fixed-point spatial teleportation technology was rare throughout the Star Alliance Federation, with only a handful of forces capable of mastering it.
However, Rek knew that the Lanstor Foundation's ability to use this teleportation gate was likely limited to this valley and along the carriage's route since numerous spatial connection points had already been densely established here at an astonishing cost. If they were to leave this valley, the Lanstor Foundation's ability to teleport living beings would definitely not be as precise.
After more than ten minutes, the swaying carriage came to a stop. A coachman dressed in ancient clothing instructed everyone in the back compartment to get off.
Rek saw a towering stone wall ahead, with the words Ancient Capital carved in ancient script. Below the wall was a large city gate, where tourists were lining up to have their identities verified by the City Guard before being allowed entry.
Rek joined the queue and took out a wooden badge engraved with Rek the Healer from his waist to show the soldier. The soldier, holding a spear, allowed Rek to enter Ancient Capital. "No fighting or causing trouble inside the city. Those caught will face severe punishment," the City Guard warned each visitor entering Ancient Capital.
Curiously, Rek stepped into the Stone City of this Ancient Capital, noticing rows of low wooden houses within the walls. Along the streets, many people dressed in ancient clothing—elderly men and women, middle-aged folks—were selling goods, including vegetables and some delicious-looking food.
He observed various small shops selling clothes, inns, pawnshops, as well as courier services and martial arts schools.
Walking along the quaint streets, feeling the earth beneath his feet, he noticed horse-drawn carriages and mounted warriors passing by.
"This is nice; it feels much better than Metal City. The air here even has a hint of earthiness," Rek sighed after taking a deep breath.
Looking at the various snacks being sold along the street and smelling their enticing aromas made him feel hungry again. He checked the small pouch hanging at his waist and found some copper coins and silver pieces—likely currency issued to tourists in Ancient Capital.
As he continued to buy snacks along the way, sampling a bit of everything while strolling leisurely through the slow-paced atmosphere of Ancient Capital, he finally arrived at a wooden storefront marked Hua Tuo Medical Center.
In front of the medical center was a notice stating that they were recruiting apprentices or healers with a foundation in herbal medicine or experience in healing.
Holding two candied hawthorns in one hand and a steaming baked sweet potato in the other, Rek confidently approached the notice and casually tore it down to wrap his hot sweet potato.
"Hey! What are you doing tearing down my notice? I worked hard on that! And no, that's not for wrapping your sweet potato!" A girl around fifteen or sixteen years old with white hair said to Rek in a calm tone.
The girl didn’t seem angry, but based on his knowledge from his Previous Life, he recognized that this robot called Moon Goddess, when speaking so urgently, was either happy or upset.
It seemed she was upset now. The Moon Goddess robot rarely showed expressions; she always appeared cold, like an ice princess.
Rek turned to look at the dream goddess from his Previous Life. She resembled the Moon Goddess in the news from the Star Alliance, but now the Moon Goddess had less sorrow and helplessness in her expression, replaced by a hint of hidden spirituality.
"I’m here to apply for a position. This is my ID badge. I am a healer, and when I saw you were looking for doctors and apprentices, I came," Rek said casually, placing a candied hawthorn and roasted sweet potato in one hand while waving his ID badge in front of the Moon Goddess with the other.
"You can't just tear down the recruitment notice if you want to apply. Follow me; you’ll have to pass my grandfather’s assessment before you can stay. Our Hua Tuo Medical Center doesn’t accept just any doctor or apprentice," the white-haired Moon Goddess said, giving Rek a glare before turning to enter the clinic.
Feeling a unique charm from the glare of the Moon Goddess, Rek followed her petite figure into the clinic.
Inside, Rek saw an old man with a white beard sitting at a wooden table, facing five or six patients waiting to be seen.
The Moon Goddess stood behind the old man, watching as he placed one hand on the right wrist of a patient in front of him, observing their pulse.
"He wants to be a healer," the Moon Goddess said only this to the old man before falling silent and glaring at Rek.
"Young man, have you studied medicine? What do you think is the meaning of being a healer?" The old man squinted at Rek.
Upon hearing this, Rek thought that this old man must be the Hua Tuo Robot, the owner of this clinic. Regarding the meaning of being a healer, during his time in his Previous Life, he had been a battlefield medic for nearly twenty years; saving lives was not something he considered while treating patients.
"Whether or not one can be saved, and whether it is worth saving," Rek replied after some thought.
"Ah! Come take a look at my current patient; how is his condition?" The Hua Tuo Elder opened his eyes upon hearing Rek's answer and gestured for him to step forward.
