Rek thought to himself, "What's so interesting about a robot being sick? These robots coming for treatment are probably just part of the program set up by the Ancient Capital research institute!"
However, Rek still stepped forward. He didn't know how to take a pulse, and he had never learned it. In his Previous Life, Rek was a surgeon during the apocalypse, mainly performing surgeries. He had no experience with such ancient medicine; he had only heard rumors about it.
"Where does it hurt?" Rek asked aloud.
"My stomach hurts; it started hurting badly after I got up this morning," the patient replied.
"Get up; I'll press on your stomach, and you tell me where it hurts," Rek said as he extended his hand and skillfully pressed on the patient's abdomen.
"Yes, oh, it hurts right here."
"Go home and drink more hot water or ginger soup. Avoid eating cold food for the next few days," Rek initially diagnosed it as gastroenteritis, a common illness during the apocalypse. At that time, food was scarce, and medicine was even scarcer. When treatment methods were limited due to a shortage of medicine, Rek would just tell patients to drink more hot water; after all, hot water wouldn't harm anyone.
The patient looked at Rek with some distrust and then glanced at Hua Tuo.
"He's not wrong; you don't have any serious issues; you just ate something bad. I'll prescribe you some medicine. Pay attention to avoid raw or cold foods for a while, and drinking more hot water will also help," Hua Tuo said to the patient.
Hua Tuo quickly diagnosed the next few patients, changing from his previously lazy demeanor. His speed was comparable to that of an emergency doctor, seeing one patient every few minutes.
After all the patients had left, Hua Tuo turned to Rek.
"Let me introduce myself; I am Hua Tuo, the owner of this Hua Tuo Medical Center. This is my granddaughter, Moon Goddess. Young man, as a healer, what type of illnesses are you skilled in treating?" Hua Tuo asked Rek.
"I specialize in treating injuries and fractures. My name is Rek," he replied.
"You have been accepted into Hua Tuo Medical Center. You'll start with a three-day trial. From tomorrow on, you'll be beside me. For patients with injuries or fractures, you'll treat them. If your skills are satisfactory, you'll earn three coins a month," Hua Tuo said.
"This is unacceptable! He's getting paid more than I am, and they won't let me practice medicine on my own. How can they allow this outsider to start practicing medicine right away!" Moon Goddess said quietly.
"Nonsense! Moon Goddess, you still lack experience. Not allowing you to practice alone is for your own good! You should learn from this new big brother," Hua Tuo said, pointing at Rek.
"By the way, Rek, do you have a place to stay in Ancient Capital?" Hua Tuo asked Rek.
"It's my first day in Ancient Capital, and I haven't found a place yet," Rek replied casually.
"Well, if you don't mind, you can stay in the back courtyard of our medical center. There's an empty room available right now," Hua Tuo offered.
Moon Goddess wanted to object but was silenced by a glare from Hua Tuo.
"How can I refuse? Moon Goddess, quickly take me to see the room in the back courtyard," Rek said without hesitation.
"Hmph!" Moon Goddess huffed, leading Rek, as she didn't want to argue too much in front of her grandfather.
As they walked to the back courtyard, Rek saw a small pavilion and a pond, along with a large medicinal herb field filled with rich aromas. He was surprised that the Hua Tuo Medical Center looked unremarkable from the outside but had such hidden treasures inside.
"You fraud! If you can't cure any patients tomorrow, just leave quickly. How can you even say that drinking hot water is a treatment method!" Moon Goddess turned around and glared at Rek.
"You should drink more water too; you seem a bit irritable lately. Water is the source of all life; we can't live without it. You'll come to realize how precious it is to have a sip of water," Rek said, feeling a bit melancholic as he recalled events from a post-apocalyptic world.
Seeing Rek's expression suddenly turn so sorrowful, Moon Goddess pointed out his room, which was the leftmost one in the courtyard. "Hey, just saying one thing makes you angry; that's your place!" After saying that, she turned to leave.
"Don't go, Moon Goddess! This is something I specially bought for you!" Rek said as he handed her a roasted sweet potato wrapped in a recruitment notice. In the future, many doctors admired the Moon Goddess Robot healer and knew that although female robots could go long periods without food, Moon Goddess particularly loved roasted sweet potatoes.
"For me! At least you have some conscience," Moon Goddess finally succumbed to the temptation of food and took the steaming roasted sweet potato from Rek's hand, starting to take small bites. Her grandfather Hua Tuo gave her very little pocket money each month, so it had been a long time since she had enjoyed her favorite food.
Moon Goddess thought that perhaps this newcomer Rek wasn't so bad after all.
Rek looked at Moon Goddess, who had successfully increased her friendliness with just a roasted sweet potato, feeling as if he were a creepy uncle tricking a little girl.
“Hey, Moon Goddess, can you teach me some Ancient Medicine? I mostly studied applied surgery, and I'm really interested in the Ancient Medicine that your medical clinic specializes in. That's why I came here,” Rek tried to ask.
“I can’t teach you. I haven’t graduated yet, and Grandpa won’t let me treat patients. If you really want to learn, you should talk to Grandpa and let him teach you. Otherwise, I’ll just give you back the roasted sweet potato,” Moon Goddess said, glancing at the third of the sweet potato she had already eaten, feeling anxious about how to return it and almost on the verge of tears.
“It’s fine. Just tell me some basic knowledge about Ancient Medicine. Even if you don’t teach me, you don’t have to return the sweet potato,” Rek said, feeling a bit overwhelmed.
“That’s good! There’s so much knowledge. Let me organize it first. After dinner tonight, come to the courtyard, and I’ll teach you the basics of Ancient Medicine,” Moon Goddess said after thinking for a moment, feeling relieved. She quickly left Rek with the roasted sweet potato and returned to her own room, as if afraid that Rek would ask for it back.
Rek entered the room assigned to him by Hua Tuo. It had a simple wooden bed and table, a large wardrobe, and a chair. As soon as he lay down on the bed, he heard the voice of the War God System in his mind.
“Host, to improve your physical attributes, you cannot rely solely on Acupuncture and medicine; you also need to exercise your body. On the path to becoming a War God, Host must continuously hone both body and mind—” the cold voice of the War God System spoke to Rek.
“Let’s cut to the chase; what do you want from me now?” Rek asked disdainfully.
“Exercise. Personal training will help Host become a War God. Now initiating the first step of basic training in the War God System: Muscle Tear Training Method.
The System will control Host’s body to perform flexibility and muscle strength training. It will only stop once Host reaches their muscle training limit. The training cycle lasts fifteen days; after one cycle, Host will possess powerful muscles and enhanced flexibility.
Friendly reminder: It is best to supplement this training with recovery medicines for muscle healing and internal injuries; otherwise, there is a risk of paralysis or severe injury leading to disability,” the voice of the War God System echoed in Rek’s mind.
