"Did you see which direction or floor the other classmates ran to?" Rek asked the five female classmates beside him.
"We ran downstairs, and they seemed to have gone upstairs. It was too chaotic at the scene, sob, I can't remember clearly," one girl said fearfully.
"Don't cry, the Zombie will hear us. I'll take you back to the classroom first, then I'll go look for them upstairs."
After escorting the five back to the classroom, Rek realized that there were only 16 living people left inside, while his mind indicated that out of 30 people, 6 had already died, leaving 24 alive, with 8 still unaccounted for.
The death rate among female students after the outbreak of the Zombie Virus was too high as they ran around in the teaching building.
"Rek, you're finally back!" Maya exclaimed when she saw Rek return with five classmates. She quickly organized everyone to push aside the desks and chairs piled at the door to let Rek and the five classmates in.
"There are still living classmates; I'm going out again to find them," Rek said as he let the five students inside and turned to leave.
Seeing Rek so brave moved most of the girls in the room. They hadn't expected that the boy who often peeked at them with a smile would be so reliable at a critical moment.
Rek went upstairs, searching each classroom while trying to avoid Zombies and avoiding fights whenever possible.
After searching extensively, Rek only found four female classmates. His mind indicated that two more from his class had died, leaving two still missing.
Even so, while Rek was searching with the four in the hallway, another female student was suddenly attacked by a Zombie male teacher who burst out of a room and scratched her.
Although Rek reacted quickly and smashed the Zombie teacher's head with a steel pipe, the injured female student began to feel feverish and soon turned into a Zombie herself, further decreasing their numbers.
Reluctantly, Rek had to abandon the search with three remaining survivors and return to the classroom where they had previously taken their exam.
Now there were only 19 people left in the classroom out of 30. Rek glanced at his mental display; there were only 21 survivors left from the original 30.
Rek prepared to lead the remaining students to escape. The teaching building was too crowded; staying here would not allow them to survive for long.
"We need to leave here. I'll go get a big school bus and then take you all away. You all stay inside for now; I'll be back soon," Rek told those in the room.
"I'll go with you! I can help; I've been observing outside through the window, and Zombies move much slower than normal people."
"You don't need to worry about my safety. If I pass by the Kendo Club classroom and can get my longsword from my storage box, I can handle more of these Zombies," said Class Leader Maya, stepping forward to speak to Rek.
After Maya finished speaking, she quickly swung a Metal Pipe that she had broken off from the table. Rek only saw a flash of white light and couldn't catch a clear view of Maya's move.
"Alright, I need to gather some food and water anyway. It's hard to carry it alone," Rek replied.
Rek and Maya left the classroom, while the female classmates inside blocked the door with desks and chairs once again.
Rek first led Maya to the Kendo Club's location on the third floor.
Along the way, Rek observed Maya's strikes—precise and swift, with no hesitation in her attacks and concentrated explosive power. This was still without her longsword; if she had it, Rek felt that even with his Genetic Mech and firepower weapons, he might not stand a chance against Maya in a one-on-one fight.
The two successfully arrived at the classroom where the Kendo Club was located.
Maya took Rek to a storage room filled with metal lockers. She pulled out a key from her pocket and retrieved a longsword wrapped in gray cloth from her locker, resembling a large knife.
Maya stood at least 1.75 meters tall, and when the longsword was upright on the ground, it nearly reached her shoulder. Rek was somewhat surprised that Maya would use such a long sword as her weapon.
"You should grab a weapon too. You look like someone who's used a blade before. There are several long knives in the training area; although they're not sharpened, they should be easier for you to handle than a steel pipe," Maya suggested to Rek. With the longsword in hand, Maya exuded a special aura that made Rek glance at her more than once.
"Okay!"
Upon arriving at the training area, they suddenly spotted a large Fat Zombie—a grotesque creature covered in pus-filled sores that was not shaped like an ordinary human—squatting on the ground gnawing on a corpse.
Around the Fat Zombie lay piles of human bones and scraps of clothing; it had clearly consumed at least five people or more, with pools of foul-smelling blood flowing beneath it.
Rek and Maya sensed danger from this abnormal Zombie.
Noticing Rek and Maya's entrance, the Fat Zombie stood up and charged at Rek with an unusual speed compared to regular Zombies.
Rek saw Maya draw her sword. With a swift motion, she slashed off one of the Fat Zombie's arms. However, the force of the impact sent Maya crashing into the wall behind her.
The Fat Zombie felt no pain; enraged by losing an arm, it let out a furious roar while its remaining arm continued reaching for Rek's head.
Rek could only defend himself with the steel pipe.
"Be careful, his strength is astonishing," Maya said, leaning against the wall and spitting out blood as she warned Rek.
With a loud crash, the steel pipe in Rek's right hand bent under the impact.
The tremendous force forced Rek to drop the steel pipe, but even so, the back of his right hand was swollen from being struck by the Fat Zombie.
Rek stepped back, gripping the steel pipe in his left hand with both hands.
"How are you?" Rek asked Maya, who was still leaning against the wall.
"I can still fight, but I underestimated his strength. Be cautious of his power and speed," Maya replied, wiping the blood from her mouth with her sleeve.
Together, Rek and Maya advanced and began to surround the Fat Zombie. After more than ten minutes of effort, they finally managed to take down the Fat Zombie together.
Exhausted, Rek and Maya sat on the ground to rest. Suddenly, Rek felt a heat spreading through his body, and his right hand began to tingle.
"Ah!" Rek glanced at his right hand; the skin was already starting to shrivel, clearly showing signs of infection.
"You’re hurt! It’s all my fault! I don’t want you to become a Zombie! I shouldn’t have brought you to the Kendo Club for weapons or suggested you come here for a sword! Rek, I don’t want you to die," Maya cried out in guilt as she looked at Rek's wound. She had seen classmates turn into Zombies after being injured and was terrified for him.
"Maya, find a way to keep our classmates alive," Rek said his last words before losing consciousness.
