After walking for a few minutes, I finally reached the deepest part of the Underground Vein, where I saw a black liquid pool. Above the pool was a severed head.
This was a head without a body, arms, or legs.
Unlike the minions of the Alien Species, this head was suspended above the black liquid pool, and the surrounding legged Head Abomination minions dared not approach it.
I looked at the shape and appearance of the head, which bore a resemblance to Elder Starshine, one of the leaders of the Star Alliance Military from back in the Parallel Space world.
As I gazed at the floating head, it was also looking at me.
"You are the surviving humans! Or perhaps surviving Star Alliance Soldiers!
After that Cataclysm, Earth has long been filled with sources of pollution and radiation.
Even though the pollution levels have decreased in recent centuries, it is still uninhabitable! How did you survive the Cataclysm? Were you frozen in a cryogenic chamber?
That shouldn't be possible! So many years have passed; even with backup energy in a cryogenic chamber, it wouldn't protect your bodies from infection," the head spoke in a hoarse and stuttering voice.
"You still remember things from when you were human, Star General," I said, somewhat surprised. This head had been completely infected and transformed into an Alien Species, having departed from humanity. I couldn't understand how it had survived underground for ten thousand years.
"You call me Starry Glory! You still remember my name.
You truly are a soldier of the Star Alliance; quickly tell me from which shelter you emerged," the head asked urgently.
Hearing this Headless Abomination speak made me feel that it possessed intelligence and memory, which made things easier.
After thinking for a moment, I replied, "Star General, it's quite complicated. Can you first tell me about your memories regarding the Cataclysm?" I asked, curious about what memories Elder Starshine might have since the War God System allowed me to control its body.
"Cataclysm! So many years have passed; since it has already happened, I'm not afraid to tell you.
The true culprit behind that Cataclysm that destroyed human civilization was actually aliens.
The aliens controlled my body through unknown means.
I only have scattered fragments of memories."
The aliens controlled my body, allowing the Star Alliance Military to activate the Seismic Disruption Weapon and launch a surprise attack on the Glorious Empire during the signing of the peace treaty, triggering a confrontation between the two empires' Ultimate Weapons, leading to the destruction of human civilization.
"I have become this way; I have turned into a mutated monster and will no longer deceive you," Elder Starshine said with a hint of sadness in his voice, his expression beginning to show struggle as he watched Rek's reaction, gauging whether Rek believed him.
The disaster from years ago had always been a burden on Star General's heart. Even after becoming an Alien Species, he did not want to be seen as the sinner of all humanity, nor did he wish to bear the blame.
Hearing this reassured Rek. Elder Starshine still did not know that the true cause was the War God System, and it seemed that Elder Starshine's fragmented memories did not include any recognition of Rek as a soldier or remember his name.
"I believe you, old general. You are a leader of the Star Alliance Military and would not make a decision that could lead to humanity's destruction. What has happened has already occurred; you would not deceive me, a mere soldier," Rek said in a calm tone, trying to soothe the increasingly agitated Elder Starshine.
"Just trust me. That's right. Now tell me, where did you come from along with those two girls and that monkey? Answer my question: why were you not infected?" Elder Starshine asked.
After thinking for a moment, Rek decided to mix some truths with lies so that Elder Starshine would believe him: "We came from the past world, from Earth before the Ultimate Weapon erupted. We traveled through time. My purpose here is to find you, Elder Starshine, and bring you back from the Underground Bunker to the world before the Cataclysm."
"You came from the past? That's impossible. Oh, right; your equipment and strength resemble that of the Star Alliance Military before the Cataclysm erupted. Even if you truly came from the past, there must be a Time Machine I don't know about. Why do you want to take me back? I have already told you I am not the sinner who triggered the Cataclysm; the real culprit is the aliens," Elder Starshine said angrily.
"We are organizing to save the future. I belong to a special Research Institution that can predict some disasters that will occur on Earth in advance. My purpose is to prevent these disasters from happening. This time my mission is to take you, future Elder Starshine, from the Underground Bunker back to replace the original Elder Starshine in this world so that the disaster of the Seismic Disruption Weapon does not occur," Rek explained.
"Ridiculous! I've become like this, how can I replace the past me in that world!
In my current form as an Alien Species, even if I return to the past world, I will be sliced up for research by the Research Institution or locked away as a test subject," Elder Starshine said angrily to Rek.
Elder Starshine had already accepted part of Rek's lies. Although there were many flaws in Rek's deception, Elder Starshine deeply wished that the Cataclysm he had ordered back then had never happened.
"Since I can take you back, my organization naturally has a way to restore you to your human form, allowing you to replace the version of yourself that was controlled by those aliens in the original world," Rek said confidently.
"How can I trust what you're saying?" The floating head detached from the black pool, circled around Rek's body once, released some breath, and glared at Rek as it spoke.
As the head approached him, Rek felt the air around him grow heavy with a dangerous aura that made it hard for him to breathe.
The power of this head was definitely more terrifying than that of Maya's father, General Muku Tenmu.
"The time for teleportation is tight; you have very little time left.
You only have one chance to cross over. If you refuse this time, you will miss your opportunity to return with us at this time point," Rek said with a serious expression.
"How do I know you're not deceiving me? If you lie to me, I will make you wish for death. I also heard part of your conversation with the two female soldiers in the Underground Vein; why didn't you mention time travel? You only talked about mineral concentration and not letting the Head Abomination swarm out," Elder Starshine's head glared at Rek for over a minute.
After hearing this, Rek realized he needed to continue weaving his lies to deceive Elder Starshine. The old man was intrigued; otherwise, he wouldn't be asking him. Now Elder Starshine just wanted a coherent explanation.
