“Benefactor, where are you?” Looking out from the inn's window, there were only a few scattered lights on the street, and Fengyin still couldn't sleep. Sitting alone by the window, a sense of longing and idle sorrow filled her heart, as she put down her brows but lifted her thoughts.
Just as Fengyin was lost in thought, a knock sounded at the door. “It's late at night, who is it outside?” Fengyin closed the window and walked toward the door.
“Fengyin, it's me.” Jinse leaned against the door for support, having come in tears.
“Jinse?” Fengyin opened the door and saw Jinse, who was sobbing uncontrollably. She gently asked, “What happened?”
“Please take a look at me; I have pain in my lower abdomen.” Fengyin supported the weak Jinse into the room. “Quickly lie down on the bed.”
On the bed, Jinse's hair was disheveled, fine sweat beaded on her forehead, and her lips were pale.
Fengyin patted her arm. “It’s nothing serious; the baby is fine. However, you have experienced some discomfort; you need to rest well.”
“How long do I need to rest?” Jinse turned her eyes away, not wanting Fengyin to see anything.
“A woman should take care of herself for ten months during pregnancy.” Fengyin smiled lightly as she brushed Jinse's hair away from her forehead. “Even when you see the emperor, don’t act recklessly; think of the child.”
Indeed, she understood. Jinse blushed as she looked at Fengyin. “I understand now.”
“You didn’t tell the emperor about the child?” Xuan Li was not someone who acted carelessly; he must not know the underlying circumstances.
Jinse shook her head, still sweating profusely. “My chest hurts terribly.”
Fengyin frowned. “It’s probably due to some disturbance.”
Jinse grasped Fengyin's hand and lowered her gaze again. “Fengyin, please walk with me; I won’t return to the capital. I am not worthy of being a mother of a nation.” She could not be like Great-Aunt, a woman of both virtue and talent, and she was too distracted; such a Jinse was unworthy.
"I won't advise you, as long as you are happy." Fengyin placed Jinse's hand under the covers and quietly sat under the lamp reading. Jinse closed her eyes, "Yin Yin, once I have the strength, we will leave." Hearing Jinse's words, Fengyin glanced thoughtfully at Jinse before lowering her head. Suddenly, she remembered that winter years ago, the young Hibiscus. Unable to escape from this youthful moment, Fengyin set down her medical book and looked at the candle flame, wondering what Benefactor would think if they knew she was the little beggar from back then.
Inside the Imperial Palace of the Capital.
"Hurry up, I can't wait any longer." In Lingxiang Palace, where music and lights filled the night, Lingxiang Princess gently stroked the embroidered silk, with a phoenix dancing around her waist. She sat on the phoenix bed, looking down at the male courtiers kneeling below.
Could it really be as rumored, that Lingxiang Princess was spoiled and indulgent, with thousands of male courtiers in the palace, singing and dancing every night without rest?
"Yue Ren, come to my side." Yue Ren was the most favored among all the male courtiers in Lingxiang Palace by Spiritual Incense. He played the zither beautifully, and although Spiritual Incense did not particularly enjoy music, she loved watching Yue Ren perform. "Princess commands," Yue Ren said as he sat beneath the phoenix bed and lowered his head.
"Hurry up," Spiritual Incense urged with a pout.
"Replying to Princess, I have done my best." Young Master Mei II's daily activities had already been reported in detail; however, the princess continued to urge him.
"What is he doing now?" Spiritual Incense patted Yue Ren's shoulder.
"Replying to Princess, Young Master Mei II has already gone to sleep." It was already late at night; soon he would need to report what Young Master Mei II had for breakfast and what tea he used, as well as whether he had used the restroom after meals. "Please take care of your health, Princess." Daytime Inspector Emperor's Wedding Preparations had not closed his eyes for three days. Yue Ren shook his head; even an iron man could not endure this. Why did the princess not feel tired?
Spiritual Incense shook her head slightly in disappointment. "Did he sleep well?"
"Replying to Princess, Young Master Mei II drank Calming Soup before falling asleep; naturally, he sleeps soundly."
"You all may leave; bring me a bowl of that Calming Soup too." Spiritual Incense hugged her knees while sitting on the phoenix bed. "Forget it; I don't want to drink or sleep."
She absolutely could not sleep; if she fell asleep even for a moment, she might never wake up again.
"Listen well, ugly woman inside my body. Mei Er belongs to me; this body is also mine. I will never let you have it." Spiritual Incense firmly put on her shoes and socks and stood in the courtyard. She could not sleep; if she did, that ugly woman would seize her body. But she wanted so badly to sleep and see Mei Er. However, there was something about Mei Er that made it so that whenever she got close to Mei Er, that woman inside her seemed to gain some power and almost pushed her out of her own body. These days Spiritual Incense felt herself growing weaker and weaker; even speaking became difficult. Preparing for her brother's wedding often went wrong. Was she nearing her limit? Would she soon have to leave her brother and Mei Er? She hated it so much—hated that woman named He Huan for stealing her little follower and trying to take over her body.
"Mei Er, I'm going to die, do you know?" Spiritual Incense crouched under the peach tree she had planted with Mel in her childhood, leaning against the peach wood, gritting her teeth. She couldn't cry; she didn't want to cry in front of that detestable woman.
"You are already dead; you drowned in that river. You are not as lucky as I am. I am the favored one of heaven; no matter where I die, I can be reborn and traverse again." He Huan wandered in the sea of Spiritual Incense's consciousness. This feeling of being imprisoned suffocated her, but this body would eventually be hers, and the identity of a princess was also hers. "How blind can you be to have such a stubborn offender come after you? Luckily, you've lost weight now; otherwise, I wouldn't even look at this body. Is it just about being taken? Why did you jump into that river back then? If you hadn't died, I wouldn't have been able to enter your body. So face reality; you are already dead. Now you are occupying the body that God arranged for me."
"I will kill you." Tears glimmered in Spiritual Incense's haggard eyes.
"Go ahead and commit suicide; I won't die." He Huan said nonchalantly. She had died too many times and finally realized that she was the most formidable among all those who traversed.
"I want us to perish together! I will curse you to never have a good death in my next life and the life after that!!!"
The emotions she had suppressed for so long finally spiraled out of control. She couldn't hold on any longer; she couldn't stay awake forever, couldn't relax forever, couldn't collapse forever. She recognized that her fate in this life had come to an end.
"Brother!!! Mei Er!!!" Spiritual Incense cried out to the sky, "You are not allowed to come over; all of you get out!" Turning around, she ordered the panicked Concubine and eunuchs, "Get out! All of you get out!" Looking at the hurt expressions of the Concubine and eunuchs who had followed her since childhood as they retreated in distress, Spiritual Incense murmured, "See you in the next life."
"Hahaha!! Hahaha... you wicked woman, ugly woman..." Spiritual Incense waved her long sleeves, sweeping the flames toward the curtain. The lamp oil and candlelight splashed onto the brocade curtain. "Hahaha... I want a fire to burn this body. Let's see how you will be reborn and occupy my body... Hahaha, hahaha." Spiritual Incense sat barefoot on the phoenix bed, hugging a pillow as she watched the flames rise. "Mei Er, I'm afraid of fire." In her short life, she was about to be burned by such a great fire twice. Spiritual Incense laughed and cried at the same time, "If time could go back, I would definitely marry you into the princess's mansion, Hehe." Before she was even burned by the fire, she was already about to collapse. "No, I must watch myself burn to death." Spiritual Incense got off the bed and approached the roaring flames.
"You can play with fire slowly; I'm leaving." He Huan scoffed and floated away lightly.
"Ah!!! Help! This princess doesn't want to die anymore!!!" Spiritual Incense ran back to the bed, but the flames were already uncontrollable. The Lingxiang Palace was in chaos; eunuchs and Concubines were wiping their tears desperately trying to save their princess. "Princess!!!" The palace echoed with wails as flames soared into the sky. Through the great fire, they could not see outside or hear any cries; the air grew thinner and thinner as Spiritual Incense gradually lost consciousness, collapsing beneath a sea of flames.
"Princess!!! Please save us from the fire quickly!! Save our princess." She was only sixteen years old; still just a child.
