Leaving the Coffee Shop, Xinran slowly walked along the street, her eyes hidden behind black sunglasses, observing the hurried passersby. It seemed as if she was the only one taking her time. She thought that she really should keep herself busy; otherwise, she would constantly think about Zhong Si and speculate whether something had happened between them, which would prevent her from finding peace and lead her into a spiral of overthinking.
“Jerry, am I disturbing your vacation? I called to ask if you could help me take on more work; I think it's time for me to start working again!” Xinran paused at the street corner to talk on the phone with Jerry.
“Summer, are you kidding me? After knowing you for so many years, do you think I don’t know your habits? Every time a new project wraps up, you always take nearly a month off before accepting new work. Why the sudden change of heart, wanting me to help you take on more jobs?” Jerry’s voice came through the phone, his brow furrowed with confusion.
“What do you mean a sudden change? In the past, I took a month off because it was hard to find new work! Right now, I've gained some fame thanks to Augus; if I don’t take advantage of it and accept more jobs, am I supposed to wait until the spotlight fades and return to my previous miserable state?”
“Alright, alright, whatever you say. If you want me to help you take on work, I will. But when it gets so busy that you can't handle it, don’t come crying to me for help!”
“I swear I won’t! Is that good enough?” Xinran chuckled and assured him.
After hanging up, Xinran felt much better. Just as she was about to leave, a shadow suddenly loomed in front of her. She looked up, and it seemed that the clouds of gloom had returned...
“Look who it is! Isn’t this the currently popular star Summer?”
Xinran coldly regarded Xia Wenjing’s face, which was painted like a palette. Without saying a word, she tried to sidestep and leave. This was a busy street filled with people; even if Xia Wenjing intended to make a scene here without regard for her image, there was no need for Xinran to engage with her. Moreover, after tearing up the equity transfer agreement that day, she had already declared that aside from her father, she had no ties with the Xia family. Therefore, she naturally pretended not to recognize Xia Wenjing.
“Hold on! Did I let you go? You’d better not be so arrogant. If you provoke me, be careful; I might expose your secrets to the paparazzi and see if you become a rat in the street that everyone despises!” Xia Wenjing threatened as she grabbed Xinran's sleeve.
“Xia Wenjing, let go of me! If you continue to disrespect me like this, be careful; those shares you've acquired might just fly away... Also, if you want to expose my secrets to the paparazzi, go ahead. But with your dull mind, you probably can’t imagine whether doing so would hurt me more or harm your own mother more!” With that, Xinran shook off Xia Wenjing's hand and intended to leave.
“Xia Jing, who is she? Do you know her?” At that moment, a man's voice interjected. Xinran raised her head in response and realized that her misfortune of encountering Xia Wenjing here was because there was a luxury store nearby. Xia Wenjing must have arranged to meet a gigolo for shopping, which explained her luck.
“Shaokai, the car is coming...” Xia Wenjing's expression changed instantly as she pretended to gently hold the arm of the man beside her, saying softly, “Oh, she’s a friend of mine. I just happened to run into her here and said hello!”
“Qi Shaokai, nice to meet you! I am Wen Jing's fiancé!”
“Summer, it's a pleasure to meet you both today. Seeing how close you two are, it seems like good days are not far off. So let me congratulate you both! Wen Jing, I wish you a speedy marriage!” Xinran politely shook hands with Qi Shaokai while secretly assessing the man before her. He was dressed in a well-fitted suit and wore gold-rimmed glasses, exuding an air of scholarly elegance. The new Mercedes sports car parked not far away hinted at his not-so-ordinary status.
It was indeed quite a stroke of luck for Xia Wenjing to find such a quality man. However, they say one should not judge by appearances; this man's outward charm might conceal some unspeakable secrets. The Xia family should really hope that Xia Wenjing does not fall victim to a wolf in sheep's clothing!
“Since the blessings have been exchanged, I won’t disturb you two any longer. Goodbye!” With that, Xinran quickly left, as if there were some germs on the people behind her...
