Inside the car, there was a calm atmosphere. Jerry was driving seriously, while Wujie focused intently on the scenery rushing by outside the window. Xinran leaned back in her seat, resting with her eyes closed. Suddenly, the phone in her hand rang, breaking the tranquility of the car and startling Xinran.
The flashing screen did not display the caller's name, only a number that Xinran had never forgotten. Although the chance of it appearing on her phone was nearly zero...
"Hello!" Xinran answered the phone slowly.
"Your father wants to see you. Come to Jingtian," came the cold voice of Aunt Zhong Cuihong from the other end.
"Jingtian! You mean Dad is in the hospital? Why is he hospitalized? Which ward is he in?" Xinran's voice suddenly rose, caught off guard by the news relayed to her over the phone. Her hand trembled as she held the phone; she could hardly believe this news!
She knew that Xia Sheng was her father's pride and joy, and if someone had taken Xia Sheng away, her father would be heartbroken. However, she never expected that he would end up in the hospital because of it. She wished Aunt Zhong hated her enough to be lying!
"He’s in ward 306. You’ll know when you get here!" Zhong Cuihong's voice remained unchanged, as if there were no waves of emotion despite her husband being in the hospital.
"Jerry, hurry up and drive to Jingtian Hospital! My dad is there!" After hanging up, Xinran urgently patted Jerry's shoulder, her voice tinged with tears, as if she might break down at any moment. She couldn't believe that after just a few days abroad, she returned to face news of her father's troubles. He was her only family; she couldn't lose him too...
"Sister Xinran, don't panic. Uncle will be fine!" Wujie grasped Xinran's trembling hand with one hand and wrapped his other arm around her shoulder, trying to lend her some strength.
Jerry had been a close friend of Xinran for many years; he understood better than anyone else how much Uncle Xia meant to her. Without saying a word, he pressed down hard on the accelerator, and the car sped towards the hospital.
When they arrived at Jingtian Hospital, Xinran quickly opened the car door and ran out. The wounds on her body still throbbed painfully, but she couldn’t care less; all she wanted was to see her dad as soon as possible...
Running up to the third floor, Xinran was slightly out of breath. Through the glass of the hospital room, she saw her father lying inside, with an IV drip in his hand, looking quite weak. Gently pushing the door open, Xinran walked in and approached the bedside. She reached out to smooth the furrowed brow of her father and let out a silent sigh.
"My dear daughter, you’re here..." At that moment, Xia Mingda slowly opened his eyes and reached out to take Xinran's hand.
"Dad, why did you scare me like this? You were in the hospital as soon as I got back!" Xinran complained playfully as she sat by the bed. "What happened to you? Why are you hospitalized?"
"I'm fine, Dad just wanted to see you. I must have scared you when you heard I was in the hospital! Silly child, I just wanted to see you. You went abroad and didn't keep in touch or even call to let me know you were safe!" Xia Mingda still looked somewhat weak, and his complexion wasn't very good.
Xinran smiled awkwardly; how could she dare to call? At that time, she had been shot and unconscious. She could tell that her father's spirit wasn't very good either; perhaps he was holding on just to see her, and a wave of sadness surged in her heart...
"My dear daughter, if you're busy with work, you don't have to stay here with me. Just go back!"
"Dad, what are you talking about? I just finished a project; there's no need for me to be busy. I want to stay here with you and watch you sleep!" Xinran slightly lifted herself up and pressed her face against Xia Mingda's, being affectionate.
"Silly girl, your dad is really useless; I can't even keep hold of my company shares. Actually, I still want to leave my 10% shares for you, but now I can't even fulfill this small wish..."
Xinran noticed the tears welling up in her father's eyes. She had underestimated how important Xia Sheng Group was to him. She needed to find out who had taken Xia Sheng away and caused her father to be hospitalized. Even if her father didn't say it, she would know—after all, there were those useless Xia Wenjing and Xia Wenjun!
"Dad, don’t think about those sad things anymore. Focus on getting better first; just listen to me!" Xinran comforted him while secretly thinking about how she could help her father reclaim Xia Sheng.
