Xinran sat dazed at the edge of her bed, hugging her knees, her eyes fixed on the dark night outside the window. She had maintained this position for several hours, yet she had no desire to move because she was so tired, tired enough to want to close her eyes and never open them again.
She kept wondering which step she had taken wrong that led her into such a messy situation. She had opened her heart to love, only to encounter a scam. She closed her heart to live for herself, only to face threats. What should she do? Who could tell her?
What exactly did Qi Shaokai want? Xinran couldn't make sense of it at all. Did he only crave her body? He had never had much physical contact with her; why would he suddenly be interested in her body? But if that wasn't the reason, then why did he make such demands?
He said he would give her three days, and after three days, she was to watch the financial news. In truth, she didn't need to watch any news; she could guess what he would do. She heard him clearly in the hospital; his goal was to destroy Xia Sheng Group. As the new president, he could easily control the rise and fall of Xia Sheng with just a wave of his hand!
The room was dark, and Xinran let out a soft breath. She needed to make a decision now: whether to agree to Qi Shaokai's threats. She knew her own capabilities; she had said she would make him kneel before her and return what he took from the Xia Family, but that was just bravado. How capable was she of reclaiming those shares? If she truly could, she wouldn't still be sitting here!
That scoundrel Xia Wenjing and that idiot Xia Wenjun easily believed Qi Shaokai's words and handed over the company for him to manage. They willingly arranged for some stock transfer before marriage. Upon hearing the results from the private investigator, Xinran could only laugh; anyone with a bit of intelligence wouldn't be fooled so thoroughly. Yet the Xia Family happened to have a few people with absolutely no intelligence... It was a pity for her father lying in the hospital; he was the most innocent one.
Tonight, there was a particularly bright star in the night sky. Xinran moved her stiff body, jumped off the bed, and leaned on the windowsill to gaze at that star. When everything around her felt chaotic, it was rare for her to have such a tranquil mindset. After thinking for so long without coming up with anything, she simply decided not to think anymore!
Although she had never been indecisive, could she really be as resolute as before in this matter?
"Turns out you're here; why didn't you turn on the lights?" Suddenly, the darkness in the room was broken as Jerry walked in and casually switched on the light.
"I was stargazing, but you ruined it!" Xinran turned her head and replied lazily.
"Stargazing!" Jerry laughed. "You only lean on the windowsill looking outside when you're feeling down. I know you're not in a good mood because of your family matters, but you need to take care of yourself too. Your gunshot wound hasn't healed yet, right?"
“Did Wujie tell you?”
“Yes, but if Wujie hadn’t told me, would you have planned to keep it from me?” Jerry walked over, wrapped his arms around Xinran's waist, and led her toward the bed.
“Of course I would tell you. It’s just that I ran into this situation as soon as I got back, and I haven’t had the chance to speak yet.” Xinran leaned gently against Jerry, allowing him to hold her. If a third person were to see this scene, they would find it hard not to misunderstand, but they truly were innocent.
“Is the wound deep?”
“Not deep, but don’t think about checking it for me. This part of my injury is quite private!” Xinran tilted her head and looked at Jerry playfully.
“Silly woman!”
“I am silly, but there’s nothing I can do about it. Who told you to know me? Consider yourself unlucky!”
“How is your father? What are you going to do next? You haven’t taken on the mess of Xia Sheng Group, have you?” Jerry understood Xinran well; she was always tough on the outside but soft-hearted inside, and she couldn’t stand seeing her family and friends get hurt.
“No, I wouldn’t be that foolish. Besides, what right do I have to take on such a huge mess?”
“That’s good. I came here to tell you that if you don’t have the strength to bear it, don’t try. Your shoulders are small; don’t overburden yourself!”
