"Did you hear that she went to work in Japan? When is she coming back?" The air froze for two or three seconds, and then Augus seemed to snap back to reality, letting out a light laugh to break the tension.
"I just got back not long ago," Xinran replied awkwardly, her gaze briefly scanning the two elderly people sitting on the sofa. She wanted to guess their feelings upon seeing her, but all she could discern from the mother of the two brothers was surprise. Their father wore a cold expression similar to Mu Shaosi's, which made Xinran feel a bit timid.
"Shaoyang, is that her?" Dewen stood up and tugged at Augus's arm. She had always felt a bit intimidated by Mu Shaosi, so she didn't dare to ask too openly about the woman he brought. But wasn't this woman Summer, who was listed in Gossip Magazine as Shaoyang's girlfriend? Shaoyang had even admitted that they were in a relationship! Why had she suddenly turned into Shaoyang's sister-in-law after just a few months?
"She is the fiancée that my brother brought back to introduce to us! Of course, we were also work partners and acted together!" Augus shot Dewen a deep look, seemingly telling their mother not to ask too many questions. As for himself, he had thought about it before; perhaps the woman his brother brought back would be Xinran. However, when Xinran actually stood before him, bearing the title of his brother's fiancée while visiting their father, his heart felt different than he had imagined—less indifferent and more concerned.
In the end, Xinran was indeed captured by his brother; her heart still belonged to him. He shouldn't have any other feelings about it—wasn't this the result he had seen coming? Back when he showed Xinran photos of his brother with other women, she had insisted on believing in him! Although later the truth came out and struck her hard, leading her to hope for no further ties with the two brothers, after Xinran went to Japan for an advertisement, his brother followed her there. He wasn't planning to let go; Xinran couldn't escape from his brother's side either!
"Dad, this is Summer. We've decided to go get our marriage certificate in a few days. I brought her back today to see you!" Mu Shaosi first politely bowed in a Japanese manner toward Mu Zhengqian and then took Xinran's hand, introducing her to Mu Zhengqian.
"Okay, I understand," Mu Zhengqian replied expressionlessly, nodding slightly.
"Hello, Uncle! Hello, Aunt!" Xinran felt extremely strange witnessing the interaction between Mu Shaosi and her father. After waiting for a moment and realizing he had no intention of speaking with his mother, she felt an overwhelming sense of unease fill the room.
"Aunt Tong, let's eat!" Mu Zhengqian did not show any kindness toward Xinran nor express any disgust; he merely glanced at her deeply before instructing the servants to serve dinner.
During the meal, Mu Shaosi thoughtfully placed food into Xinran's bowl while she numbly ate without knowing what she was consuming. She had thought that this meal might not be pleasant due to her special status, but she never expected it would be so difficult for her to swallow. She wondered if it was her presence that made the meal so awkward or if their family dinners were always like this.
She could see that there was not only a lack of verbal interaction between Mu Shaosi and his young and beautiful mother but even their eye contact was nonexistent. Did they have some kind of conflict? One detail she noticed was that Augus seemed to have a better relationship with their mother. Xinran admitted that this family's mystery piqued her curiosity, but she didn't know if she should ask Mu Shaosi for clarification—could he even tell her?
