With a sigh, Mo Xier's face was filled with satisfaction. If her future days could be this comfortable, she would be willing to live in this state forever.
The two sat in silence for a while. She stood up and patted the man's shoulder. "Remember to investigate thoroughly for me. If I keep dreaming like this, I might not be far from going crazy."
Her face was all smiles, and there was an undeniable sincerity in her words. Night Star's eyes darkened slightly as he nodded in agreement.
"Since you're so busy, I won't disturb you. I'll come back at noon to have lunch with you." After expressing her farewell, Mo Xier left the room without looking back.
What seemed like ordinary words left the man momentarily stunned, but what he didn't see was the suspicious flush on the woman's face as she turned away.
Mo Xier herself didn't understand why she had said that. Somewhere in her heart, it felt like a little deer was jumping around, almost making it hard for her to breathe.
What seemed like a promise flowed smoothly from her lips. Although they had only spent a short time together, their rapport felt as if they had been friends for years.
Stealing a glance back, the man in the room lowered his head to continue handling the documents in front of him. His serious expression made Mo Xier chuckle softly. The nightmare from yesterday had long dissipated, leaving only joy behind.
Night Star's gaze was fixed on the documents, but his mind was completely elsewhere. The woman's earlier words echoed in his mind; he was not unfamiliar with the Azure Dragon-shaped mark.
He casually picked up the paper that had been tossed aside, and the ugly shape of the Azure Dragon deeply pierced his eyes.
This mark was also on his armor. With just one glance, he recognized it but did not tell Mo Xier the truth; he found it somewhat perplexing.
Clearly, their first meeting was on the way back to the capital when she was in an unconscious state. But why did it seem as if they were already acquainted in her dreams? Was he really a heartless man?
Now that he thought about it carefully, he felt that Mo Xier's appearance was somewhat sudden and out of nowhere. She had white hair and seemed to possess all the qualities that piqued his interest.
If she truly intended to appear, then who was behind her orchestrating everything?
Because of a woman's dream, it seemed that something was entangled, yet it also felt like nothing at all; everything remained as elusive as her dream, shrouded in mist and clouds, unclear.
Back in the room, Mo Xier still felt a bit light-headed. Ru Er immediately noticed the difference; with a beaming face, anyone could tell she was in a good mood.
"Miss, wasn't breakfast delicious?" Ru Er ventured to ask.
A smile slowly crept across her lips, but her response seemed off-topic. "Ru Er, do you think if a wooden figure suddenly acts like a child, it means it has feelings too?"
"Wooden figure?" Ru Er was puzzled. "How can wood talk? Isn't it an inanimate object?"
"I originally thought he was cold and unfeeling, but after spending time together, I found him quite amusing."
"Amusing?" Mo Xier's words left Ru Er even more confused. She had thought there might be progress between the young lady and the young master, but now it seemed she had overthought it.
In high spirits, Mo Xier stretched widely and said casually, "Since there's still time, I’ll take another nap. I had dreams all night yesterday; it really wore me out."
"Huh?" In Ru Er's astonishment, Mo Xier snuggled back into her comfortable bedding with a satisfied smile.
However, things would not go as smoothly as imagined. Before lunchtime arrived, news of Old Madam's awakening spread from her courtyard.
Night Star rushed over immediately but was blocked at the door by Rong Mama.
"Old Madam has already awakened. She instructed that you should not disturb her unless you have decided how to deal with that Demoness; only then will Old Madam agree to see you."
Standing outside the door like this, the atmosphere in the General's residence changed subtly.
The servants were all accustomed to reading expressions. Although Night Star was a general, it was clear that the one in charge of the General's residence was not him, but Old Madam.
The news of Old Madam waking up spread throughout the entire General's residence in an instant, and within moments, even Mo Xier received the news.
Still half-asleep, she jumped out of bed with a start and hurriedly asked Ru Er to help her get ready. After all, she bore some responsibility for Old Madam's fainting. Now that she had finally woken up, it was only right for her to pay a visit.
Rushing to Old Madam's courtyard, she saw a man kneeling outside the door. His rigid back gave off an inexplicable sense of desolation.
As her hand slowly rested against the wall, a pang of heartache surged within her, making it hard for her to stand. The feelings hidden deep inside her made it difficult for her to face him.
She walked slowly to his side and lowered her head slightly, her tone filled with guilt. "I'm sorry. If it weren't for me, Old Madam wouldn't have fainted, and you wouldn't have to kneel here for so long."
Suddenly looking up, Night Star replied matter-of-factly, "Bringing you back was my decision; I naturally have to take responsibility for you."
Rong Mama came out again and saw the person kneeling on the ground. "Old Madam has said that you don't need to do this, Young Master. As long as you deal with this Demoness, Old Madam will naturally forgive you."
Looking at Mo Xier, there was disdain in his eyes. The woman bit her lip; she finally understood what discrimination felt like.
"However, some women are quite thick-skinned. They clearly know that the Young Master and Old Madam don't have a good relationship but still insist on inserting themselves in between." Rong Mama said pointedly.
Mo Xier's body stiffened instantly at those words. Rong Mama's bluntness left her unsure of how to react. In modern times, she had always been lively and cheerful and had never been so disliked or isolated by others. This feeling was hard for her to accept.
"I'm not a Demoness." At this moment, it was all she could say, but it sounded exceptionally pale and powerless.
"Isn't it up to you to decide what a Demoness is? Or have you ever seen anyone like you, with hair that changes from black to white?"
Mo Xier could only respond with silence. In modern times, this wouldn't be a big deal, but unfortunately, this was the feudal ancient era! The beliefs in gods and demons had long taken hold of everyone's minds; it wasn't something that could be easily changed.
"You are merely a servant; what business do you have meddling in matters between masters?" Night Star spoke coldly, filled with the indifference he had previously shown.
Rong Mama was left speechless by the retort, only able to huff in anger, but she had no other words to say.
"If she cannot speak, then I should be able to," said Old Madam, her voice carrying a hint of age. Pale-faced and leaning on her cane, she stood at the door with a stern expression.
"Son pays respects to his mother." Night Star acted with great respect, showing no sign of disdain.
Old Madam remained expressionless, as if she didn't even see her son before her. She did not allow him to rise and directly stated, "I find it hard to understand why some people you dislike always seem to want to get close to you."
Seeing Old Madam come out, Rong Mama quickly stepped forward to support her and echoed, "What Old Madam says is true; some people are just thick-skinned and shameless."
The derogatory remarks aimed at Mo Xier were like sharp knives, cutting into her heart again and again. She had done nothing wrong; why were these people so unwilling to let her go?
Her hands at her sides gradually clenched into fists, sharp nails digging into her palms. Only this clear pain could remind her and keep her awake.
"Get up; I don't need you kneeling. Such false pretenses—who are they for?"
Regarding Night Star, Old Madam's attitude was chillingly indifferent, almost frightening. That kind of apathy was no different from that shown to a stranger.
Looking down at the man who remained kneeling without moving, she shed her tough exterior. This was the first time Mo Xier softened for him.
"Old Madam, all the problems are on me. You don't need to take your anger out on your son. If you want me to leave, that's fine. As long as he lets me go, I will leave without looking back!"
She gazed intently into the distance, her eyes filled with a hint of stubbornness. It was Night Star who brought her here, and the only person qualified to let her leave was him.
With a disdainful snort, Old Madam dismissed her words. "You, a Demoness, dare to negotiate with me? I'm not afraid of you not leaving. After I woke up today, I have already instructed the Chancellor to report this matter to the Sovereign. By then, even if you don't want to leave, you will have to!"
"What?" Night Star exclaimed in shock. "Mother! Why must you act this way? Don't you care about our mother-son bond at all?"
Old Madam couldn't help but laugh loudly a few times, striking the ground with her cane in frustration. "Wretched child! If you cared about our bond, you wouldn't have brought this Demoness back to the General's residence!"
As it seemed that another argument between mother and son was about to erupt, Rong Mama timely intervened. "Old Madam, you've just woken up; don't be so angry. It's not good for your health."
"Get out! All of you get out! Night Star, I tell you! As long as I am in this General's residence, I absolutely will not allow this Demoness to stay here!" Old Madam was already furious and didn't want to argue any longer; she raised her cane and began to chase them away.
The seemingly casual swing of the cane struck the man's back. Even he, seasoned from battles, couldn't withstand such a heavy blow when caught off guard; he staggered slightly and almost fell to the ground.
Mo Xier gasped and quickly shielded the man with her body, feeling a sharp pain in her heart. "They say even a tiger won't harm its cubs; yet Old Madam can be so ruthless towards her own son!"
"Own son?" Jiang Yu paused his actions, a nearly mocking smile curling at the corners of his mouth as he murmured softly, "Just an ungrateful white-eyed wolf raised poorly!"
He turned away in anger without any lingering feelings, as if the person kneeling on the ground was not a human but an object, and she had no emotions for him at all.
Such indifference made even Mo Xier, an outsider, feel a chill in her heart.
