The closer she got to the city gate, the faster Mo Xier's heart raced, fearing that her hopes would be dashed and she would not get the outcome she desired. 0

The city gate gradually came into view, no longer as desolate as before. The number of guards had increased, and her eyes were constantly searching. Suddenly, a familiar figure appeared before her! 0

Dressed in coarse cloth like herself, with long hair that seemed to have been neglected for a long time, casually tied up in a bun at the back of her head, the woman standing at the city gate appeared to be waiting for something. Upon seeing her, her eyes lit up. 0

Excitedly jumping up, she waved her hands and shouted, "Miss! Miss, I'm here!" 0

Unable to contain her excitement any longer, Mo Xier quickened her pace but abruptly stopped at the city gate. Everyone knew that the Plague was rampant in Yonghe City. Looking at Ru Er, she seemed healthy, without a trace of illness. If that were the case, why would she still want to let her in? What if she got infected? 0

Seeing her sudden halt, Ru Er's eyes showed some confusion. She stepped forward but was stopped by the guards. "Miss, it's me, Ru Er! Don't you recognize me?" 0

"Of course I recognize you. How did you end up here?" 0

"I heard that the Night General was here and thought perhaps you might be here too, so I came to try my luck. I never expected to actually find you!" 0

Excitement sparkled in Ru Er's eyes as she continued, "Miss, I'm so glad you're okay. I've been worried about you for quite a while!" 0

Hearing this made it impossible for Mo Xier not to feel a bit moved. Although they hadn't spent much time together, Ru Er genuinely cared for her. 0

"It's good that you're fine," she said softly with comforting eyes. 0

"Miss, please let them allow me in. It's not easy to see you again; my heart can finally rest." 0

After a moment of hesitation, Mo Xier immediately replied, "No! I can't let you in!" 0

"Why not?" Ru Er looked at her with confusion in her eyes. They had finally met after such difficulty; why wouldn't she let her inside? 0

“Yonghe City has been plagued by the Plague, which is no secret. Although it is now under control, it has not been completely cured. You are a healthy person; how can I let you in and expose you to the risk of contracting the Plague?” Mo Xier said seriously. 0

Ru Er was slightly taken aback. No one had ever treated her so well before, and she felt touched, a faint smile appearing on her lips. 0

“Miss, if it weren't for what happened on the road, I would have entered the city with you long ago. This is where I should be. Wherever you are, I will be there too!” 0

Though she seemed like a delicate girl, her voice was strong and resolute as she spoke. 0

“Miss, please let me in. It is my duty to take care of you as assigned by the Night General. Naturally, I want to be with you!” 0

“If you contract the Plague, won’t you regret it?” She tilted her head slightly, looking at Ru Er with some confusion. At that moment, she truly didn't know whether to commend her loyalty or consider it foolishness. 0

The smile on Ru Er’s face grew wider as she replied loudly, “What is there to regret? Even if I were unfortunate enough to contract the Plague, wouldn’t I have you, a divine healer, by my side? I have faith in you!” 0

“Divine healer?” She found this title somewhat unfamiliar. 0

“You might not know in the city, but outside everyone is already talking about it. They say you are incredible and can even cure the Plague.” She spoke with a hint of pride, as if the praise was directed at her. 0

Surprised and touched by her unwavering support, Mo Xier softened her heart and raised her hand to signal the guards to let her in. She did not care much for the social hierarchy of servants in ancient times; to her, Ru Er felt more like a friend. 0

“Since you’re in now, you cannot escape. Let’s return to the clinic together.” 0

“Yes! Miss!” 0

Having finally reunited after a long separation, they naturally had much to talk about. However, there were quite a few patients in the clinic, and they were busy all day until they finally found some free time in the evening. 0

Most of the rooms in the clinic were used to accommodate patients, but fortunately, Ru Er could share a room with her, which wasn’t particularly troublesome. 0

In the dim light of the Candlelight, Mo Xier sat in front of a mirror while Ru Er gently combed her hair. It had been a long time since she had properly groomed herself, and her once smooth hair was now somewhat tangled. 0

The two of them, having some free time, mostly discussed the assassination that day. 0

"I returned to the original spot that day, but you were already gone, and the Night General was injured. We couldn't stay there any longer, so we entered the forest. Where did you go?" Her eyes were fixed on the mirror, looking at Ru Er's reflection. 0

It seemed to evoke some painful memories; her hand, which was combing her hair, paused for a moment but quickly returned to normal. 0

"That day, I heard the sounds of fighting ahead and wanted to check it out, but I found myself surrounded by a group of men in black. In the chaos, several Family Guards protected me for a while, and only then did I find an opportunity to escape." 0

Recalling that day's events, she couldn't help but voice her confusion. "But I didn't see any bodies left behind at the scene." 0

From the mirror, although she couldn't clearly see Ru Er's expression, she could distinctly feel the air behind her growing tense. 0

"Is that so? Perhaps they all fled. I was panicking that day and didn't dare return to the original spot; I could only stay in a nearby village for a few days. Afterward, I heard about the Night General being here, so I came." 0

Even though she sensed something was off, she quickly masked her expression and smiled. "I'm glad you're okay!" 0

As night deepened, the clinic fell into silence. In the darkness, Mo Xier lay in bed but couldn't fall asleep. 0

For some reason, she suddenly felt uneasy. She should have been happy that Ru Er returned, yet at that moment, she felt something was off about Ru Er. 0

Staring at the blank ceiling until her eyes grew heavy with fatigue, she slowly closed them. 0

Her intuition was sharp, but at that moment, her heart was unwilling to acknowledge it. She could only make excuses to comfort herself, thinking perhaps Ru Er was just startled and that's why she seemed different from usual. 0

As her mind settled down, she felt much more at ease. After tossing and turning several times, she finally fell asleep. 0

The next morning, as soon as she woke up, she saw Ru Er had already prepared everything and was waiting for her to wake up. 0

"Miss, you're awake! I've brought you hot water; it should still be warm." 0

She, who had not been served for a long time, felt a bit unaccustomed and awkwardly said, "You don't need to do this anymore. I can manage on my own." 0

"Miss, are you dismissing me?" Ru Er's eyes suddenly flashed with a look of grievance, making one feel pity for her. 0

"No, this isn't the General's residence. You don't have to be so formal. Just help me comb my hair like before," she said as she stood up. However, Ru Er still came over to assist her with the arrangement. She truly could not refuse her and had to go along with it. 0

Looking at herself in the mirror, with her hair neatly styled for the first time in days, she couldn't help but feel a bit emotional. "I haven't styled my hair much since you left. Now that I'm doing it again, it feels a bit unfamiliar." 0

"You are so beautiful, Miss; naturally, you should dress well. Otherwise, how can you capture the General's heart?" 0

As soon as the words left her mouth, Ru Er was taken aback and instinctively covered her mouth, hurriedly explaining, "I didn't mean to say that. Please don't mind me; I just..." 0

After stammering for a long time, she couldn't articulate her thoughts. Seeing her embarrassment, Mo Xier had no intention of pursuing the matter further. She simply shook her head and gently advised, "I hope I won't hear such words again in the future." 0

"Yes, Miss. I will never say that again." 0

As she took Ru Er out, they happened to run into Night Star, who had just returned. He looked somewhat haggard, his brows slightly furrowed, and he was surprised to see Ru Er. 0

"Are you surprised to see her here? I thought Ru Er had perished in that assassination attempt. Thankfully, she's still alive." A smile spread across the woman's face. 0

He gazed deeply at Ru Er without speaking, merely nodding his head while the probing look in his eyes was unmistakable. 0

"Why are you back so early? Did you not sleep last night?" 0

Weary, he pinched the bridge of his nose and replied, "There was a problem with the refugees outside the city. I've been discussing countermeasures with Lord Liu until now." 0

"Is it serious?" 0

"Not too bad," he said lightly. But only he knew that the situation with the refugees outside was about to spiral out of control. 0

In just a few days, the number of refugees coming out of Gaochang City has increased from a dozen to several hundred, with a continuous upward trend. 0

Although Yonghe City is not exactly safe, it is much safer than Gaochang. Moreover, there is water and food available. The refugees who can still stay calmly outside the city will soon become restless due to food shortages. 0

As long as someone stirs up trouble, riots could break out at any moment. The war between Gaochang and the Heavenly Universe Kingdom has not ended for long, and if unrest erupts now, it will only harm the people in Yonghe City. 0

Hearing him say this, her previously worried heart calmed down. "Don't harm them; they are quite pitiful. If their homes weren't troubled by the Plague, who would be willing to leave their hometown?" Sympathy shone in her eyes. 0

"That's only natural." 0

"Have you thought of a solution?" Mo Xier then asked. 0

The man shook his head slightly. "For now, we can only focus on calming them down. But if one day we really can't control it anymore, Lord Liu and I may have to take strong measures to drive them away." 0

Mo Xier nodded in understanding. Although she felt disappointed, she knew there was no other way. 0

However, what she did not see was the slightly stunned expression on Ru Er's face behind her after hearing all the conversations. But in an instant, it vanished without a trace, as if it had never appeared. 0

Yet, no matter how well she hid it, she could not escape the gaze of Night Star, who had been observing her from the corner of his eye. After seeing that expression, a cold emotion flickered in his eyes before disappearing into the depths of his gaze. 0
