Liu Xuxin had just left the courtyard for a short while when the black figure she had seen earlier appeared inside Old Madam's room, moving lightly without making much noise.
However, Jiang Yu, who had been lying in bed with her eyes tightly closed and in an unconscious state, opened her eyes the moment the shadow entered.
Her clear eyes were even clearer than before; it was hard to tell that she had been unconscious.
"What kind of person do you have your eyes on? So timid and afraid of trouble, how can such a woman be the wife of a general's household?"
The man's voice was deep as he slowly removed the mask that had been covering his face, revealing his true appearance. The man in black was none other than Old Madam's brother, Chancellor!
"I value her timidity; only such a person can be easily manipulated in the future. Do you really want to give that wild child a woman like a Demoness?" Jiang Yu slowly sat up from the bed, adjusting her clothes.
Jiang Huai casually poured himself a cup of tea, took a slow sip, and remained silent, his gaze fixed on the medicine bowl on the table.
After tidying her clothes, she suddenly stood up and moved to sit beside him. She poured herself a cup and asked, "I wonder what brings my brother here today? Instead of taking care of matters in court, you have time to meddle in your sister's household affairs."
She should have kept quiet; as soon as she spoke, it seemed to poke at his sore spot. The teacup he held tightly shattered on the table with a loud crash, and his expression turned exceptionally serious.
"Don't think I don't know about what you've done before. From the extermination of that family until now, do you really believe your actions are flawless?"
Old Madam tightened her grip on the teacup. Hearing him say this made her expression turn somewhat ugly. "Brother, is this how you monitor me? I didn't realize you no longer trust me."
"Trust?" His tone rose slightly as he stared at her without blinking. "It's not that I don't trust you; it's just that sometimes you can't go too far. Have you considered what would happen if that woman found out it was you who ordered the extermination of that family? What would Night Star do? Have you thought about it?"
Old Madam straightened her neck but did not answer.
"As long as you don't go overboard, when have I ever stopped you? But what you're doing now is indeed a bit excessive."
Old Madam chuckled lightly, withdrawing her hands to rest on her lap. Her expression softened as she smiled and asked, "Then what does my brother think I should do now so that it wouldn't be considered excessive?"
Seeing her seemingly humble inquiry, Jiang Huai slowly replied, "Why not follow Madam Liu's suggestion? Given Night Star's temperament, keeping that woman as a concubine shouldn't be too much trouble. After all, which person with some power doesn't have multiple wives and concubines?"
The smile on her face gradually froze. She could never have imagined that at this point, even her brother would advise her to accept that Demoness! Keeping that Demoness was something she absolutely could not allow to happen!
"Brother..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Jiang Huai interrupted her. He raised his hand and said, "I know you probably can't accept this right now, but you need to understand that under the current circumstances, Night Star is someone we need to win over!
If we can't control him, how can we talk about you reuniting with your biological son? Think about our grand plan! Everything must be considered thoroughly."
Despite his words, the expression on Old Madam's face indicated that she was not feeling well at the moment.
"Are you... okay?" Looking at her complexion, he couldn't help but feel worried; after all, she was his sister, and there was no reason not to be concerned.
"I'm fine, brother, you don't need to worry." She slightly leaned back to avoid his outstretched hand.
Her previous act of spitting blood was merely a ploy to show everyone Night Star's unfilial behavior towards her! Little did she expect that while she had spat blood, she did not achieve the desired result!
The two sat facing each other; although they were siblings, the atmosphere felt as awkward as if they were strangers.
After a moment of silence, Jiang Huai broke the stillness in the room. "Have there been any updates on him recently?"
Jiang Yu's expression momentarily froze, as if she didn't immediately grasp who he meant by "him." However, she quickly lowered her gaze and softly replied, "Brother, you also don't know where he is. In such a place, how could he frequently send news back? It's been a long time since we've heard from him!"
"Really?" His tone carried a hint of disbelief, clearly questioning her words.
"What do you mean by that, brother? Do you think I would lie to you about this as your sister?" Old Madam's tone became unusually agitated, as if she had been insulted. Her eyes widened as she stared directly at him.
He instantly realized the inappropriateness of his words and quickly explained, "That's not what I meant. He has lost contact for several months now. If I weren't worried about him, I wouldn't say such things. Sister, please don't take my earlier words to heart; after all, we came from the same womb. We are family!"
After hearing his words, although Old Madam's expression didn't improve much, it was certainly better than before.
After a long silence, she slowly nodded and softly said, "Even if you hadn't mentioned it, I would know about these matters. I understand that you're worried about him. Rest assured, as soon as I have any news about him, I will inform you immediately."
At this point, she suddenly paused and stared directly into his eyes without moving. Her gaze was filled with determination as she continued, "Just like you said, I've always known we are siblings and what it means to be family!"
Old Madam's words seemed to reassure him; the heavy expression on his face lightened considerably. He smiled and patted her wrist before glancing out the window. It was getting late.
She immediately stood up and said, "I will take my leave today. Please consider what I just proposed. If you truly do not wish to keep her, then let it be as if I never said anything."
After saying this, she vanished from Jiang Yu's sight in the blink of an eye. Looking at the empty room, Old Madam's previously straight back relaxed instantly, and the expression on her face softened considerably.
Her gaze suddenly shifted to the steaming herbal soup on the table, and a strange smile appeared on her lips, sending a chill down one's spine.
She casually picked up the bowl of soup and poured it into a nearby flower pot. The medicine was still steaming when it all quickly ended up in the pot.
Placing the bowl back on the table, her smile grew even more peculiar as her eyes turned toward the window, lost in thought.
Meanwhile, in the courtyard, Mo Xier was not in a much better state. She sat at the table, dazed and unable to regain her senses for a long time.
The moment the prayer beads struck her, it felt as if a string had snapped in her mind. Fragments of memories flashed continuously before her eyes, overwhelming her with their intensity.
It seemed that long ago, someone had treated her similarly. The pain on her cheek remained vivid; she trembled as she touched it but quickly withdrew her hand.
Gently closing her eyes, fragments of memory continued to flicker in her mind. In a haze, she seemed to see a woman resembling Old Madam, who had also scolded her sternly.
Her frail body felt like a kite in the wind as she knelt on the ground, seemingly fragile enough to fall over with just a gust. Sitting in the chair, she could still feel the pain radiating from her knees at that time.
Her body began to tremble uncontrollably. She could not make out the woman's face from her memories nor remember who she was, but that feeling of fear surged deeply within her mind.
It was an unshakeable feeling, like a curse; her hand unconsciously clenched tightly, sharp nails digging into her palm without her realizing it. She continued to pinch herself tightly, as if only the pain in her palm could help her distinguish reality from illusion.
Her lips were tightly pressed together, and beads of sweat began to form on her forehead, sliding down her cheeks. The floodgates of memory opened wide; like water that could not be retracted, she had no power to resist and could only let herself be consumed by it.
Xinrong returned quickly after delivering the medicine. As soon as she stepped into the room, she noticed Mo Xier's pale complexion—where was the color she had seen earlier? Rushing forward, she supported Mo Xier's body with concern etched on her face.
At the moment Xinrong's hand touched her body, Mo Xier's eyes flew open suddenly, filled with murderous intent! Startled, Xinrong quickly withdrew her hand and took several steps back, disbelief written all over her face.
"Miss... are you alright?" Despite feeling fear inside, she softly asked out of concern for Mo Xier's condition.
Meeting Mo Xier's bloodshot eyes—seemingly filled with rage—there was no clarity left in her expression as she sat dazed at the table. Seeing this situation only heightened Xinrong's worry.
She moved forward slowly, her inner fear not drowning out her concern for the woman. Even though she was scared, she began to approach gradually. "Miss, it's Xinrong! What happened to you?"
Trembling hands once again covered her body, but this time, it was finally different from the last. "Miss, are you feeling unwell? Should I call a doctor?"
Seeing the dazed expression on her face, Xinrong felt anxious. Just as she was about to give up and turn to call for a doctor, Mo Xier seemed to suddenly regain her senses.
She grabbed Xinrong's wrist tightly, slightly lowering her gaze and softly said, "I'm fine. There's no need to call a doctor. Have you forgotten? I know medicine myself. If there's anything wrong, I can handle it."
With her head lowered, it was impossible to see her expression clearly. Her hands were crossed on her lap, nervously intertwined, which undoubtedly revealed her inner unease. However, this unease was deeply buried in her heart and went unnoticed by anyone.
"Miss, are you really okay?" Xinrong still looked worried, seeming to doubt what she said.
The look in her eyes lingered in Mo Xier's mind; it was a gaze she had never seen before. How could she say she was fine?
"I'm really okay!" Raising her eyes again, Mo Xier's gaze became much clearer as if the murderous intent from before had never existed. "Has the medicine been delivered to Old Madam?"
"It has already been delivered." Looking at her complexion, Xinrong's words were clearly hesitant, but seeing that her face was no longer as pale as before, she chose not to ask further.
"Miss, your face looks like this; it must hurt a lot, right? Let me get some medicine for you to apply. You'll feel better by morning!"
Meeting Xinrong's bright eyes made Mo Xier's heart ache as if something had struck it hard. In the past, there was a woman who tried everything to be good to her but ultimately betrayed her!
